ISLAMIC COLLEGE OF MELBOURNE FAITH. KNOWLEDGE. SUCCESS. French kicks off at ICOM Alhamdulillah, the bizarre wave of events that was 2020 did end on a positive note for many. ICOM recently earned approval to begin teaching the IB Diploma Programme at year 11 & 12 level, so some of us teachers got right on to planning excursions and functions. This year therefore marks the beginning of French teaching at ICOM, starting with 2021’s year 10 & 11 students. To commemorate this moment, I organised a workshop with the French classes that featured a sumptuous array of breakfast food to motivate learning with our fingers, mouths and noses. 2021’s IB French students were treated to an introductory French workshop and extravagant French breakfast courtesy of Mr Siddiqi and the Secondary Team. On the last teaching day of Term 4, ICOM’s French students sampled some croissants from Essendon’s Parisian Bakery, served with sweet sides of Nutella, strawberries, jam and fruit juice. There were Belgian waffles served with bananas and coffee, and students, on top of all that, were offered little dabs of truffle honey to widen their gastronomic horizons. Mr Hakan Oser even joined in on the action cooking up his own French toast à la Turc. Suffice to say it was une expérience très délicieuse! I’m looking forward to seeing these smiling faces again in 2021. Mr Ahmad Siddiqi Secondary French Teacher PAGE 18 www.icom.vic.edu.au

ISLAMIC COLLEGE OF MELBOURNE FAITH. KNOWLEDGE. SUCCESS. Year 3: Big Science Show Incursion! On the 5th of November, as part of the Science Unit Melting Moments, our Year 3 students participated in the ‘Mad about Science Big Science Show’. They explored the properties of air, electricity and fire. Our presenter Lucy captivated students with experiments including the flying tea bag and the static electricity demonstration with a Van Der Graff generator. Students were eager to see giant smoke rings blasted from a rubbish bin. The vortexes of air sailed through the room and into student faces! Year 3’s learnt about density and static electricity. They cheered enthusiastically as air was used to levitate a beach ball. The incursion concluded with the toilet paper experiment. Student volunteers held a toilet roll on a paint brush roller; Lucy held a leaf blower, aimed it upwards, turned it on and toilet paper was propelled across the room. Our amazing bunch of Year 3 students were in awe; the room was filled with excitement. Ms Sabiha Sahin Year 3 Teacher Feedback? Suggestions?
