JUNIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
                                VOLUNTEER SERVICE
                                  DESCRIPTIONS

This guide explains each volunteer area and will help you in completing your application.
You can request the areas you are most interested in volunteering. We will do our best to
place you if it is available, but there is no guarantee. Volunteers must be willing to work
wherever needed. Returning students are placed first and have top priority for patient
contact areas. More positions will likely be added.

                                  LEADERSHIP ROLES

 TEAM LEAD
 You must be a 3rd or 4th year program participant to apply for this position. This is our only
 leadership role and all applicants for this position will be interviewed. In this role you will
 assist the junior volunteers scheduled on your day. You will answer questions they may have
 and will serve as the point person for them during the program as well as make weekly
 rounds to check in on the juniors in their assignments. You will communicate with
 departments when someone is out, track hours for pins, take photos for the yearbook and
 assist in orientation and the recognition at the end of the program. While in the volunteer
 office you will assist with office tasks and running errands. We have five openings (Monday-
 Friday) and are looking for someone who is outgoing, positive, has good communication skills
 and will be a good role model to others. This is a highly recognized position where you will be
 awarded a special certificate in the end along with the chance to receive the Bettsanne
 Holmes Leadership award that is given to one Team Lead each year. See guidelines for

                                    PATIENT CONTACT

ADMITTING
The role of the volunteer is to assist Admitting Desk staff in meeting the needs of patients and
families of patients who are in need of hospital services. Volunteers will greet patients and
family at reception counter, give directions to visitors, escort patients to their rooms, make
admission packets, run errands, file, and sort mail.

ASU
The role of the volunteer is to assist the staff in meeting the needs of patients and familes in
need of hospital services. Volunteers will greet and assist visitors in the busy ASU waiting
room, provide escort services to various destinations within the hospital, retrieve/replenish
wheelchairs when necessary, wipe down wheelchairs and help with special assignments as
needed.

CHILD BIRTH EDUCATION
Assemble packets, assist with mailings and other clerical tasks, check supplies, run errands
as needed, assist with other tasks as assigned.
CHILD LIFE CENTER (Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital)
You must be a 3rd or 4th year program participant to apply for this position. Volunteers in
Child life play with patients in the playroom using toys, games, puzzles and crafts. They
clean the playroom toys, sort games and books in atrium. They may occasionally visit with
a patient at bedside when they cannot leave their room.

CICU/R9W (Cardiac)
The role of the volunteer is to assist the staff in helping to maintain the efficient functioning of the
department for the care and comfort of patients. They assist patients and families with getting
supplies and refreshments, assist at time of discharge, a walking buddy for patients who need to
walk, visit with patients, assist unit with tidying waiting areas, put patient education packets
together, assist with other administrative tasks as needed.

ESCORT – EMERGENCY
The role of the escort is to provide the highest level of customer service. Volunteers provide
assistance and escort outpatients and visitors to various locations in the hospital. Volunteers will
also assist the Customer Service Representatives (CSR) in serving these individuals. Volunteers
will provide and offer wheelchair transportation, be alert to individuals with special needs, and
respond to special assistance requests from CSR.

FAMILY BIRTH CENTER
Assist with discharges, greet visitors, run errands as needed, assemble packets, check supplies
and stock nurses’ stations, and assist with other tasks as assigned.

FINANCIAL SERVICES
For those interested in financial services, customer service skill building, and practicing people
skills. The Volunteer will sit at the Front Desk of a busy Financial Services area on the ground
floor and offer assistance to an incoming flux of patients.

HOSPITAL ELDER LIFE PROGRAM (HELP)
You must be a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year program participant to apply for this position. The Hospital
Elder Life Program involves working with the geriatric population (70+) to help keep their minds
active and keep their muscles strong while they are hospitalized. Volunteers visit designated
patients, helping to set up meal trays, order food, bring in the newspaper or other therapeutic
supplies, engage the patient in conversation. Volunteers will work to engage the patient in
range of motion exercises and check to see how they are sleeping. Volunteers must have an
outgoing personality, good communication skills and the ability to work independently after
being fully trained.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE
Volunteers are located at the Main Entrance Lobby and South Entrance. The role of the escort is
to provide assistance and escort outpatients, visitors and friends to various locations in the
hospital. Volunteer will also assist the Customer Service Representative (CSR) in serving these
individuals. They will provide wheelchair transportation to those who need it, be alert to
individuals with special needs, replenish wheelchairs as needed, deliver mail/packages and “stat”
items received at the information desks to various departments, conduct proactive rounding
throughout hospital corridors looking for patients/visitors that need assistance, respond to special
assistance requests from other departments.

RADIOLOGY
The role of the volunteer is to assist the staff in helping to maintain efficient functioning of the
department for the care and comfort of patients. Duties include escorting patients from one area of
the department to another, office tasks, running errands, assisting in preparing rooms, tidying the
waiting room areas and helping with other tasks as needed.
R1 NURSING UNIT:
The role of the volunteer is to assist the staff in helping to maintain the efficient functioning of
the department for the care and comfort of patients. Duties include filing, stocking,
documenting weekly checks such as refrigerator temperatures, assisting the unit helper with
day-to-day tasks and assisting in discharging of patients.

R3 NURSING UNIT:
This is a general med/surgical unit where patients recover after having surgery typically of the
abdomen. There are lots of discharges and admissions on the unit. Volunteers will assist with
discharges, passing water, assisting with cleaning bins in clean utility and data entry. Volunteer
will work with NUH (Nursing Unit Helper) to place supplies in serviettes, stocking precaution
gowns, entering data into computer for hand hygiene compliance, visiting with patients.

R6 NURSING UNIT:
The role of the volunteer is to assist the staff in helping to maintain the efficient functioning of
the department for the care and comfort of patients. Duties include assisting with discharge of
patients, passing water and afternoon snacks to patients, visiting patients, assisting the nursing
unit helper, restocking the unit, running errands and other duties as assigned.

                             SUPPORT SERVICES/CLERICAL

 BOUTIQUE
 Volunteers greet customers, operate the cash register, make change, process credit cards,
 and assist staff in maintaining a neat, attractive Boutique catering to new moms and their
 babies.

 CAFETERIA
 The cafeteria is looking for volunteers with a great attitude and a smile. Restock condiment
 tables, cups, covers, and napkin dispensers when necessary. Assist kitchen staff with
 preparation of patient trays, clean Dining Room tables and chairs, sweep Dining Room floor,
 make coffee, and occasionally work behind the counters serving food. Stocking salad bar and
 cooking pizzas.

 ENDOSCOPY
 The role of the volunteer is to assist the staff in helping to maintain the efficient functioning of
 the department for the care and comfort of patients. Duties include assisting with discharging
 of patients, passing water and snacks, cleaning stretchers, restocking the unit, running
 errands, helping with office tasks, assembling packets and other duties as assigned.

 EXECUTIVE SEARCH
 The volunteer position supports long term goals of data capture of executives throughout the
 country and organizations along with short term goals of assisting our team with our everyday
 work and interviews. Duties include data capture, assistance with interview preparation, running
 errands, filing and organizing.

 FLOWER BOX
 Greet customers, deliver flowers to patient rooms. Assist in preparing flowers; learn simple
 flower arrangements; help price and shelve new stock; answer phone; run errands; clean
 flower containers and help keep shop neat and clean.

 GIFT SHOP
 Volunteers operate the cash register, make change, process credit cards, and assist in
 maintaining a neat attractive shop.
HUMAN RESOURCES ASSISTANT
The role of this volunteer is to collate and package materials for new employees with pertinent
information on MMC as they begin their employment at the New Employee Orientation.

INPATIENT PHARMACY
The Inpatient Pharmacy services all MMC patients and drug distribution across 3 campuses.
Volunteers will assist the pharmacy inventory control specialist with various tasks such as
filing, data entry and product receiving. Volunteers need to be detail oriented and have strong
computer skills and be willing to perform repetitive tasks.

INFORMATION SERVICES
Information Services (IS) is the first point of contact for all computer related issues at MMC.
Volunteers will “run” with the techs on calls to learn about their role. Volunteers will receive
training in printer, PC, wireless, etc. Volunteers will also round on nursing floors to ensure PC’s
are up and running. Basic computer skills needed.

LOBBY KIOSK
Assist at the coffee kiosk in the busy MMC Lobby. Greet and serve customers; restock
condiment table and supplies, keep kitchenette tidy, clean and neat, and brew coffee.
Operate cash register.

MAIL ROOM
The mailroom receives roughly 10 tubs and 5 trays of mail from the Post Office daily. This
mail must be sorted and delivered to departments throughout the hospital. The mailroom is
also responsible for sealing and stamping outgoing US Mail. Volunteers will be taught how to
divide the mail into 2 categories – presort and first class. Volunteer will also be taught how to
operate the postage meter machine.

MATERIALS MANAGEMENT
Volunteer will assist in stocking shelves at the onsite supply room, so when supplies are
needed for patient care, they are readily available. This position will also include running
errands throughout the hospital.

NUTRITION SERVICES
Volunteers will support the standard of serving patients food and delivery in a timely and safe
manner. Volunteers will help assemble patient trays, help in the dish room, prep food. Skills
needed: ability to learn new tasks and take direction from staff. Adhere to department policy of
using gloves when preparing food and hair bonnets must be worn at all times in the kitchen.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
You must be a 3rd or 4th year program participant to apply for this position. Volunteers will
assist with organizing very important daily “Gemba Walks” for staff through the hospital.
Volunteers will update 80 “KPI boards” daily throughout all hospital units. They will organize
events and work with statistics. Volunteers will need to be present on the ONE training day
during the first week, even if it is not your day.

 PAVILION GRILL
 Volunteers will spend time on the floor and behind the counter. Duties involve filling condiments,
 making frappes, sundaes/smoothies, clearing tables, answering phones and taking phone
 orders. Volunteers may operate cash register if comfortable.

SIMULATION CENTER (BRIGHTON MEDICAL)
The role of the volunteer is to benefit the Simulation Center by providing support to the staff.
TALENT ACQUISITION
The volunteer position supports the Talent Acquisition team by assisting with the coordination
and execution of various recruitment projects and strategies.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES OFFICE ASSISTANT
Duties of the Volunteer Services Office Assistant include running errands, helping with
general office tasks including photocopying, filing, scanning, and other duties as assigned.
