On 6 February 2022, the 70th anniversary of her accession, Her Majesty the Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. The celebration of the Jubilee will culminate in a special weekend of events (Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June) including church services, the Trooping of the Colour, concerts, the lighting of beacons, and other events. Many churches and communities will celebrate this landmark anniversary. I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service... But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your support will be unfailingly given. God help me to make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share in it. Princess Elizabeth, 21 April 1947 When I spoke to you last... I asked you all, whatever your religion, to pray for me on the day of my Coronation - to pray that God would give me wisdom and strength to carry out the promises that I should then be making... I have been uplifted and sustained by the knowledge that your thoughts and prayers were with me. Her Majesty the Queen, Coronation Day, 2 June 1953 O Lord, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, we give you thanks for your servant Elizabeth our Queen. May she ever be provided with all she may need for her ministry among us, strengthened to meet every demand which her office may make, and in all things nourished by your word and example, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, world without end. Amen. Coronation Prayer of Thanksgiving (adapted)
Dear friends, The first Sunday in June this year is Pentecost Sunday. The word ‘Pentecost’ has Greek origins and means ‘fiftieth’ – it is a festival 50 days after Easter. Nowadays it is celebrated as the day of the birth of the Church because so many people – over 3000 - were baptised on that day nearly 2000 years ago when Simon Peter spoke with such power and wisdom after receiving the Holy Spirit. Those baptised people devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the breaking of bread and to prayers. They shared everything so that no-one went without, they ate with glad and generous hearts, they praised God and had the goodwill of all the people (Acts Chapter 2). They became a community – a congregation… I am conscious that although the lockdowns have been lifted and we are now more able to get out, there are still a few people who have not yet returned to Church services. I can totally understand the fear that some people have, after all, covid has not gone away, we still need to be mindful of this. We hope, in time, that more people will feel confident to return to services. On that first Pentecostal when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples who were completely surrounded by people of all languages, creeds and cultures, and the Good News that they gave transformed those around them. Those first Disciples had known Jesus as their Teacher, Companion and Friend – someone they could see, touch and trust, who lived side by side with them. At Pentecost by the power of the Holy Spirit they came to know Him, and therefore God, as a spiritual Presence within their hearts, which would beat with the love of God for those around them. And the church was born… One of the many sad after-effects of the pandemic is that people have become disconnected from one another and from their communities of faith. However, Pentecost is the time when we remember the birth of the church - not it's dying. The Pentecostal message that the disciples discovered is that God is to be sought, not merely above us, around us or about us, but within our hearts. We are all God’s created beings – we are God’s children
– each of which was born with God’s spiritual Presence within their hearts. This transforms lives because in the first place, it brings God very near to us. This then starts a process of learning – just like the first disciples. God is Spirit and is as near to us as possible. It is our bodies that separate us, enabling distance and space to come between. But it is in God’s Spirit that we can be so near to each other. May you know God’s Spirit in you and through you, and may your heart beat with love for those all around. Robert

PENTECOST The Day of Pentecost marks fifty days since Easter Day and brings the Easter season to an end. It is a major feast of the Church’s year when Christians recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations. When was the last time that we heard the wind of your Spirit roar through this place? When was the last time your fire lit up this room? When was the last time we took you at your word and met together in expectation of your Spirit filling this place, and these lives with your Glory and Power? Lord, you challenge us with Pentecost. Do we believe that this was a once in eternity experience, never to be repeated? That the Holy Spirit was poured out on your followers for a single purpose, and ended His work at that instant? If so, then maybe that is why the Church seems so powerless in this age, helpless when faced with the needs both spiritual and physical, that we see in the world. Lord, as we meet together, and celebrate once again the memory of that first Pentecost, may it be for us as it was then a moment of empowerment, an awareness of your Glory in this dark world, a life changing experience.
The Season of Trinity Trinity season is the longest season of the Anglican liturgical cycle. It lasts from the week after Pentecost to Advent. It is during this season that we study the life of Christ as He completely obeyed the commands of the Father, as He taught His disciples, and as He ministered to the people around Him. The colour of the season is Green. We bind unto ourselves today The strong name of the Trinity By invocation of the same, The Three in One, and One in Three. Of whom all nature has creation; Eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of our salvation; Salvation is of Christ the Lord. Amen. O triune God, what an exciting mystery we celebrate today, that you, our God, are three persons in one being. Your essence is so awesome, it is beyond our understanding. O Father, you adopted us as your children through the death and resurrection of your Son. O Holy Spirit, you gave us faith in Jesus through explosive power of the gospel. You testify that we are God’s children, and you guarantee our inheritance of eternal glory with Jesus. O holy Trinity, your saving love overwhelms us. Keep us as your own, and each day move us to declare: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty! We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy spirit, one God, through all eternity. Amen.
The Road to Emmaus St Luke tells us that Emmaus is some seven miles from Jerusalem. However, there being no town or village of that name today a place was found that is 7 miles from Jerusalem. The two despondent disciples were joined by the risen Jesus who led them through the Old Testament books to show how God had promised a redeemer who would be killed and would then rise again, so that those who trust in him would have eternal life. I would love to have been present at that Bible study! After Jesus had vanished out of their sight the disciples walked the 7 miles back to join their comrades in the upper room, when they were visited by the risen Lord, who repeated the Bible study. One of them was Matthew and as his Gospel tells of Jesus’ ministry he keeps going back to scriptures as he had heard his Master do. Revd Eric Last
