What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s on?? What’s o What’s happening in the Churches today? ….. in the Heart of Eden Well, there is quite a lot of news actually. As I write, the Anglican churches in the Appleby area are just about to meet some people who might be suitable candidates to become the new Rector. The PCCs have put in a huge amount of groundwork to ensure the advertisements in church newspapers attract someone who has a set of skills which can rise to the challenge of a changing church. As well as having to lead 10 PCCs and 13 places of worship, we now try never to do anything on our own, but work with other churches to tell the good news of Jesus. It’s great though people are offering to come here! There is more good news! Two people are in the process of considering how they could serve the church, perhaps as ordained persons, perhaps not, but which significantly add to the team of people here who lead services and do all things the community looks to the church for help with, such as the important times in life when our babies are christened, our young people get married and our loved ones are laid to rest, as well as a whole host of work involved in helping people. The new way for the churches to work together means we can address the changes and challenges Christians are facing today with greater strength and vision. One of those challenges is to re-think and re-energise the inherited parish system of historic churches run by church councils. Like everywhere else these institutions at the heart of our communities face two main challenges - an aging congregation and the cost of keeping the show on the road. For example, the big church in Appleby, St Lawrence’s in the real world costs approximately £1533 a week to keep its doors open. But despite the herculean efforts of church members, only approximately £1325 a week is raised towards that cost. Thank God the younger generation amongst us are pioneering new ways for the church to reach young people and families, especially in places like Kirkby Thore, Warcop and Musgrave and at the Sands Methodist Church in Appleby. God’s church of the future is growing now and as the hymn asks God, “past put behind us, to the future take us.” Amen! Peter Boyles
