Dear Educator, Welcome! We are excited you are here and I trust our Educators’ Convention will not only be instructive, but inspirational. Praise the Lord, this year we are joined by our fellow laborers for the cause of Christian Education from the states of Indiana and Ohio. We are thankful their leadership made this meeting a priority on their calendar. Our society has put a lot of emphasis on educating the mind but very little emphasis on the heart. That is why our theme this year comes from II Peter 1:3 “… all things that pertain unto life and godliness through Him.” Truth is that’s where education apart from God is today. God has been taken out of the government schools and has been replaced with worldly gods. We have the opportunity to lift Him up in our classrooms and teach the Word of God in our schools. We wish to extend a special thank you to Lewis Avenue Baptist Church for hosting us. God bless our Christian educators, as you strive to increase your effectiveness in the classroom and have a greater impact on the world for our Lord. In Christ, Dr. Douglas R. Jackson 6

Math Workshop Session 1 11:00 AM – 11:50 AM Critical Thinking And A Biblical Approach To Literature Marie Thompson (4) Auditorium In contrast to the false theories of literary interpretation, a Biblical approach to literature not only helps students benefit from the richness to be found in quality literature, it proves to be one of the most effective means of developing critical thinking. Using a few samples from literature, this session shows how you can hone your students’ thinking and discernment with critical-thinking activities to enhance your teaching and your students’ learning experience. History Through Eyes Of Faith Dr. Bryan Smith (2, 3, 4, 6, 8) G113 Christians agree that the Bible is essential to understanding history. But what is this supposed to look like in the classroom? Many teachers focus on godly character traits seen in the lives of certain individuals. But this approach often leaves the core objectives of history unaffected by biblical teaching. This workshop proposes that the key to effective biblical integration is Christian worldview shaping. Students learn Christianly when they see the past through the lens of a Christian worldview. Discover classroom practices that will help you achieve core history objectives in a distinctively Christian way. Does Anybody Hear Me? Ann Marie Rill (6) HS114 Communication involves much more than spoken or written words. Our dress and demeanor as well as the strength of the relationships we build with students, parents, and faculty all determine the effectiveness and the outcome of our communication. 19
How to Lead Through Challenging Times in Ministry: The Right Path at the Right Time (1 Corinthians 4; Acts 20:28) Dr. Marty Herron (4, 5, 6) HS115-116 When committed to a life of ministry, hardships and opposition will come. Knowing these chal- lenges, Paul charges church leaders to maintain five priorities to help you stay on the right path for life and ministry. How to Disciple And Counsel Young Women Christy Taylor (Ladies Only) HS119 There is no doubt that you have hurting girls in your classroom this year. But do you know how to challenge their wrong thinking? Do you know how to help them face their problems instead of running from them? How would it feel to be able to help them track their problem down to its root? Each God-ordained student is also an opportunity for discipleship and ministry. The goal of this session is to help demystify the process of building closer discipleship relationships with your female students and to equip you to better handle the word of God as you interact with them this school year. Google Classroom Crash Course Dr. David Warren (2, 3, 4, 14) HS121-123 What is Google Classroom and how can I use it in my school? Google Classroom helps teach- ers create & organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently and communicate with their classes with ease. This workshop will be a hands-on lesson on how to use Google Class- room effectively and efficiently to bring your classroom into the digital age in a free and easy way. Even if you have used Google Classroom before, we will show you the newest features and best practices to help you be even more effective and efficient. Overview of the Iowa Assessment and Cognitive Abilities Tests Testing Program Judylynn Walton (6) HS122 The Iowa Assessments and CogAT are proven measures of student achievement and reason- ing abilities. A proper use of these tests will offer educators a diagnostic look at how their students are progressing in key areas. The various levels of the Iowa Assessment can provide reliable norm-referenced scores that also predict ACT and SAT scores. This workshop has been revised to include NEW information about the new Form G Iowa materials and the new 2017 norms being used for the 2021–22 school year. When Traditional Phonics Doesn’t Work Pam O’Shaughnessey (1, 2) ED205-207 Why do some students have a difficult time learning to read and spell with traditional phonics? Learn some different strategies to help all students learn to read and spell well. Overview of BJU Press Secondary ELA Products Joaquim (JR) Remelgado (2, 3, 4) ED202-204 Discover how BJU Press uses academic rigor, biblical worldview shaping, and technology so- lutions to create ELA products that help students grow academically and spiritually. Learn about the different features of these products and how teachers can use them effectively. 20
Making Numbers Count In Preschool And Kindergarten Crystal Turner (1, 2) Fellowship Hall As we make numbers time an enjoyable time, we can teach our students to press forward and excel with numbers! Integrating Drama in Your Music Program Marlene Dickinson (3, 4, 15, 16) A134 Because Jesus taught using stories, we know that learning truth through story creates mean- ingful memories. We will explore tips for finding resources and directing students in musical theatre and story songs. These pieces add energy, engagement, and enrichment to any pro- gram. Demonstration topics include finding and playing story arcs, helping students under- stand and convey intentions, obstacles, discoveries, turns, and resolutions in their story songs. Demystifying Minister's Taxes Lynette Staples (5) A136 This workshop will include a discussion of the uniqueness of ministers’ returns, important salary designations that make a difference, and the accountability necessary for pastors and churches. She will be addressing new tax laws and the changes to Child Tax Credits, deductions, and tax rates. The workshop is set up with a PPT format and questions will be accepted as time permits. She will be available for other questions during the confer- ence. What Is A Conservative? Mark Herbster (6) A140 The word “conservative” seems to have a variety of connotations. To some Christians it is a negative term and to others it is positive one. However, the term does have depth and meaning when it is articulated in a proper way. The purpose of this session is to develop an accurate perception of what it means to be a conservative Christian. In order for someone to decide whether or not to be a “conservative” they better know what it means. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Workshop Session 2 1:00 PM – 1:50 PM Battling For A Teen's Heart (Dealing With Rebellious Youth) Dr. Jim Schettler (3, 4, 6) Auditorium This workshop will give the biblical strategy to win over a rebellious teen’s heart. This session is practical and powerful! Stressing Christian Service to our Students Tim Lapish (6) G113 When we encourage the areas of Christian service and ministry to our students it will make our schools far more spiritual and far less worldly. Students who are serving tend to be better in academics and less of a discipline problem. The Fellowship Tract League can provide that catalyst for spiritual growth among your students with our Gospel Tract presentation. When ministry is emphasized first with academics being a very close second you will see an amazing difference. It will also be a great help to your Church Youth De- partment. Teaching Like The Master Dr. Mark Stupka (2, 3, 4, 6) HS114 Christ is our perfect Example for living, and He is our perfect Example as a teacher as well! This workshop examines Christ's teaching methods and makes practical applications for to- day's educators. Thanks, Or No Thanks (Gratitude) Mark Herbster (3, 4, 6) HS115-116 God’s will for every believer is that they would be a grateful person. An attitude of gratitude is one of the distinct marks of those who are spirit filled. This session will discern from scripture the theology of thanksgiving. Teaching Students To Gain A Clear Conscience Dr. Hubert Hartzler (6) HS119 Google Meets Crash Course Dr. David Warren (14) hs121-123 Learn how to use Google Meet for real-time student collaboration, connecting to the world, and driving student discussion in and out of the classroom. We will discuss how Google Meets has many uses beyond just distance learning and why it is preferred over Zoom for educational settings. The Use Of DataManager Judylynn Walton (5) HS122 DataManager is a powerful online resource for managing the Iowa and CogAT assess- ment programs. DataManager allows school staff to construct and view reports, interpret and analyze results, and access digital resources. This workshop has been revised to include information about the new design of the DataManager website. 23
Strike Up The Band Dr. Steve Allen (15, 16) ED129 Attend this workshop to start or improve your school’s band program. Trauma In The Classroom: How To Help Hurting Kids: Part 1 Dr. Erin Yezbick (2, 3, 4, 6) ED205-207 Research has shown that the rate of traumatic childhood events is unchanged regardless of religious, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. With that understanding, this workshop provides Christian educators with an overview of Adverse Childhood Experi- ences (ACEs)--what they are, how they manifest in the classroom, and a Biblical founda- tion for best practices to help students build resilience. Helping Students Develop Strong Writing Skills Joaquim (JR) Remelgado (2, 3, 4, 11) ED202-204 Develop methods for challenging a group of students who have different writing abilities. Learn how to create an effective but manageable plan for teaching grammar and composition, tailor that plan to meet the needs of each student, and develop a teaching style that keeps students engaged as they improve their writing skills. Who Owns Language? Part 1: Descriptive Vs. Prescriptive Marie Thompson (3, 4, 6) Fellowship Hall “Who owns language?” A critical question to ask since our view of the ownership of lan- guage will determine how we teach it. As we consider the two approaches to grammar— descriptive and prescriptive, we’ll briefly examine their histories, explain their intrinsic be- liefs, and see how those differences come out in our teaching. Grounded in the why, we can be far more effective in teaching the what. Help! I'm a Yearbook Advisor! Ben Michalek (6) A134 Consider basic expectations of being a yearbook advisor (or adviser, if you prefer). We will not dig deep into the possibilities yearbooking but rather will give a general overview of major pitfalls to avoid and major milestones to reach. Advisors of all experience levels and other interested parties are welcomed as we have much to learn from each other. Necessary vs. Distracting: It's A Tough Choice Becky Rulapaugh (1, 2) A136 Do you feel like you are never good enough? Are you frustrated that you are always busy and can't seem to ever find time to rest? Maybe, like the biblical Martha, you're distracted with much serving. Let's take a moment, get away from all the "things," and refocus. We'll identify the necessary things, be encouraged from God's Word, and nail down the essen- tials that make for successful learning experiences. Knowing the difference between "nec- essary" and "distracting" will help us make the right choices in our lives and classrooms. How To Respond To The Transgender Movement Josh Hershberger (4, 6) A140 The LGBTQ movement has, of late, focused its energy on the “T,” with transgenderism show- ing up in the Olympics, at the Supreme Court and even on children’s cereal boxes. So, how 24
should Christian schools navigate the ministry and cultural issues raised by the transgender movement? In this presentation, Josh Hershberger (attorney, minister and advocate for Chris- tian ideas in public life) gives practical principles and ideas for speaking the truth in love about LGBTQ issues, handling related enrollment and discipline questions and preparing for and responding to public scrutiny. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ................................................................................................................................................................................................................. I Corinthians 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Workshop Session 3 2:30 PM – 3:20 PM Going From Me To We: Life Is A Team Sport Dr. Jim Schettler (4, 6, 12) Auditorium This session will give the three components of being a great team player in the ministry that God has called you to. Life is a team sport. Join us to find out how to be a team player and how teamwork makes the dream work. The Importance Of Teaching Bible Doctrine In High School Rodney King (4) G113 Learning Bible Doctrine and teaching teenagers are not mutually exclusive. The Chris- tian's faith rests firmly in the teaching of Scripture. As Paul observes, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine” (2 Timothy 3:16). In the wake of many teenagers leaving the faith after high school it is more important than ever to ground young people in the doctrines of Scripture so that they may be rooted and grounded in truth. It is that foundation that will serve them well when the enemy seeks to destroy their faith. "The Play's The Thing:" Drama Production In The Christian School Jim Potter (3, 4, 15) HS114 Let's talk about "all things dramatic" in the middle and secondary school. Through questions and answers we will deal with the challenges of choosing a play, working with a school sched- ule, motivating teens, staging productions, using lighting, costuming, stage make up, and help- ing young actors build scenes to powerful finishes. 25
Humility Mark Herbster (3, 4, 5, 6) HS115-116 Scripture clearly articulates that God’s blessing is only on the humble. Proud leadership is not successful leadership. It is essential that Christian leaders cultivate genuine humility. This ses- sion will discover some of the key ingredients to genuine humility. Ready, Set, Go! Jennifer Talladay (3, 4, 6) HS119 Executive Functioning Challenges: Task Initiation ~ Teaching the planning and organization needed for students who struggle to get started, stay organized, and finish projects. Raising Leaders Mark Julian (3, 4, 6) HS121-123 Riding the COVID-Slide: AACS Students’ Learning In The Wake Of Coronavirus Phil Alsup (6) HS122 The COVID pandemic has certainly disrupted the lives and learning of millions of students, and there is much speculation about learning loss and “COVID-Slide” from school shutdowns and virtual learning.
