March 21, 2021 | Fifth Sunday in Lent Jottings from Fr. Joe Horn Dear Parish Family, LENT AND Preparing for Holy Week Holy week is the most holy and sacred time of year HOLY WEEK for Catholics. Starting next week, beginning with Palm SCHEDULE Sunday, the faithful will walk with our Lord Jesus Christ on the way to Calvary. The readings, Mass, and litur- 2021 gies of Holy Week will “make present” once again the events that led to our salvation. As disciples of Jesus we are expected to make time for God, both in per- sonal prayer and in prayer with the community. It is Every Friday during Lent: my hope that we all set aside Holy Week, especially Adoration – 6:00 PM Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Holy Week, as days Stations of the Cross-7:00 PM of increased prayer. Palm Sunday-March 28, 2021 These three days are referred to as the Triduum—the 7:00, *9:00 and 10:45 AM, 12:30 PM, most sacred three days of the year. The Triduum is *4:00 PM (Spanish), and 6:00 PM Masses like a documentary of the last days of Christ broken into three parts. Jottings from Fr. Joe Con't from front page Christian Service “Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before the people; He also divided the two fish among them all. They ate and all were satisfied.” (Mark 6:41-42) Tenebrae. If you have never attended a Tenebrae ser- vice, I suggest you make this year your first. It is a pow- erfully moving prayer which reminds us that though Christ’s body is in the tomb, He is about to be risen at Easter. And finally the third part of the Triduum is the Easter Vigil liturgy where, with great celebration, we welcome the Risen Christ. We begin with the Lucinarium, the lighting of the Paschal candle, from which all the other lights in the church are lit. On this night we baptize those in the RCIA who have been preparing all year, some are confirmed, and others are received fully into the faith. Consider Holy week to be the Super Bowl of weeks and, please, make room for these special liturgies in your busy schedules. At the Sanctuary gates in the Basilica there will Palm Sunday be baskets to receive donations for the poor. Evangelization & Faith Formation One summer during my college years I found myself in Istanbul, Turkey, talking to college students about faith. Each day I took a ferry across the Bosphorus, had the best conversations, and drank chai. The Turkish people were amazingly kind, and the college students were fascinated to meet a Christian for the first time in their entire lives! Istanbul is a bustling city, and I often found myself bumping into people. A friend taught me how to • Follow Your Questions. The Fourth Sunday of Lent The Second Scrutiny On Sunday, March 14th we celebrated the Second Scrutiny with our “elect” Tara Paladino and Alyssa Kruszewski who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil- please join us! The Scrutinies are meant to uncover, and then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life. These Rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all. Please continue to pray for our elect as the continue their preparation for their new life in Christ, thank you! We welcome Alyssa Kruszewski I’ve always been someone who believes by seeing and I’ve always heard ‘God will show you the signs when you’re ready’. This was something I always struggled with because in my heart, I knew there was something bigger out there but I couldn’t grasp the concept because I couldn’t see it. I always looked for signs where I could and since my fiancé and I started attending Shrine a few years back, I couldn’t help but notice them. For instance, when my fiancé asked me to marry him, we were making our way to Pyramid Point, part of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, and it was raining the whole ride there. As we started to hike, it was continuing to sprinkle, as soon as we got to the outlook, where he asked me to marry him, the rain stopped and the sun started shining. Shortly after this, I made the decision that I wanted to be baptized and really start my journey. The defining moment that solidified that this was what God wanted was when I choose my Godmother to accompany me on my journey. I told her the saint’s name I had chosen to take, Cecilia, and she told me that was her godmother’s name. Later that day, we went to dinner to celebrate our day spent with God and a picture of Mother Theresa was on the wall in the corner. My godmother turned to me and said “We were meant to be here today.” I think that was God’s way of telling me I made the perfect choice.” Wondering about the Catholic Faith? We would be so honored to walk with you on your journey in exploring the Catholic faith and becoming Catholic. You are welcomed at any time. Now may be the perfect time for you! Saint of the Week St. Oscar Romero Feast Day March 24 1942-1980 St. Oscar was an archbishop in El Salvador during a time of political and social unrest. He was not swayed by politics or people, and was a vocal critic of the government and rebels. His outspoken support of the poor brought threats to his life. He was martyred while saying Mass at a hospital. We pray to him for the courage to live our faith faithfully. Our church is now accepting online donations through GiveCentral, our new safe, secure, and paperless way to make your contributions. GiveCentral was designed specifically for Cath- olic organizations and hundreds of parishes have found success. The site allows you to make one-time or recurring payments on a schedule that works best for you, using any credit or debit card, or electronic (ACH) bank withdrawal. We believe that having flexible giving options will make it easier for you to support our church. Please visit GiveCentral and take a few minutes to set up your contributions. Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated! Calling all Women! Join us for: Embracing Edith Stein: Wisdom for Women from St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Begins Friday, April 9 9:30-11:30 AM Location: TBD St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was a philosopher, spiritual writer, feminist, Carmelite, and inspiration for Pope John Paul II’s writings on the feminine genius and Theology of the Body. Her writings on women’s spirituality are an inspiration for all women as we seek to discover our authentic identity as women created in the image and likeness of God. We will be reading and reflecting on Stein’s writings from the book entitled: Embracing Edith Stein: Wisdom for Women from St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross by Anne Costa. The book can be ordered through Amazon. Cost for the book is $14.99 plus tax and shipping. Sessions will be facilitated by Judy Maten. If you would like Judy to order the book for you, or if you have questions, please contact her at judym@ viamariaconsulting.com. Location for the sessions will depend on COVID restrictions and weather. Early sessions may be via Zoom. RSVP to Judy if you plan on attending. How is God calling You?
