Session 1 - 10 to 10:15 am… RockSAT-X https://www.rocksatx.aoe.vt.edu/ Member: Nicholas Jones Purpose: working with NASA to provide low-cost access to space for university student design teams. Teams are allotted a modular payload space on a sounding rocket which is launched every August from NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
Session 2 - 10:15 to 10:30 am… Society of Women Engineers (SWE) http://www.swevatech.com/ Members: Lauren Chuderewicz, Marielle Buchy Purpose: A professional, social, service network that connects women to other female engineers across campus, over the country, and around the world. We promote the presence of strong females in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Session 3 - 10:30 to 10:40 am… NASA Student Launch Initiative (NASA SLI) https://www.nasa.gov/stem/stude ntlaunch/2018- 2019_teams/index.html Members: Erin Schiefelbein, Morgan Re Purpose: To provide relevant, cost-effective rocket propulsion systems.
Session 4 - 10:40 to 10:50 am… Mars Madness https://gobblerconnect.vt.edu/organi zation/marsmadness Member: Rudra Patel Purpose: To develop a human powered rover that is simple, yet efficient in navigating the complex terrain of mars. The club is dedicated through research, design, and construction to represent Virginia Tech at completion in April 2021.
Session 5 - 10:50 to 11 am… Orbital Launch Vehicle Team (OLVT) https://olvt.org/ Members: Kevin Engle, Adam Hinson Purpose: Virginia Tech students devoted to becoming the first college team to deliver an object into pass the Karman Line (100 km altitude). OLVT is comprised of students in avionics, structures, electronics, propulsion, launch operations, trajectory analysis, and business.
Session 6 - 11 to 11:15 am… Rocketry@VT https://gobblerconnect.vt.edu/or ganization/rocketryatvirginiatech Member: Daniel Melillo Purpose: to participate in the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) hosted by ESRA and Spaceport America in New Mexico. We compete in the student researched and developed (SRAD) category and manufacture a high power rocket with a scientific payload. The competition goal is to launch to 10,000 feet.
Session 7 – 11:15 to 11:30 am… Wind Turbine Team https://gobblerconnect.vt.edu/o rganization/WTTVT Members: Kai Kato, Hayley Capilitan Purpose: to design and build a functioning, small-scale wind turbine and develop a mock Wind Farm. Also, to provide members with the opportunity to acquire skills in wind energy and participate in the Collegiate Wind Competition. This event requires teams to build, market, and select a mock implementation location for a wind turbine.
Session 8 - 11:30 to 11:45 am… 3D Printer Aircraft Team (3DPAC) Members: Dylan Adie, Milad Rowshanbakhtfardian Purpose: To 3D print a viable fixed wing aircraft and participate in endurance style events at competition.
Session 9 - 11:45 am to Noon… National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) https://www.vtnsbe.org/ Member: Quincy Brooks Purpose: To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

Session 10 - Noon to 12:10 pm… Human Powered Submarine Team https://www.hps.aoe.vt.edu/ Members: Audrie Corral, Regan Alex, Gillian Hersh Purpose: to design, build, and race submarines that are propelled and controlled by a human pilot. To compete at the International Submarine Races requires understanding of hydrodynamics, electronics, composite materials, and machining. Participation on the team gives students a experience in the design progress from concept to functioning craft, as well as the experience of competition.
Session 11 – 12:10 to 12:20 pm… Astrobotics http://vtastrobotics.mystrikingl y.com/ Members: Grant Anderson, Henry Forsyth Purpose: To compete in the NASA Robotic Mining Competition: a design challenge based on a mission of traveling to and inhabiting Mars. Water is one of the most important factors for sustaining life and it can be found in the form of icy gravel beneath the surface of Mars. The purpose of the RMC is to design and manufacture an autonomous Mars mining robot that is able to extract this icy gravel.
Session 12 - 12:20 to 12:30 pm… Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) http://www.shpe.org.vt.edu/ Member: Louis Montano Purpose: changing lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize their fullest potential through STEM awareness, access, support and development. Our vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
Session 13 - 12:30 to 12:45 pm… Baja SAE https://vtbaja.wixsite.com/vtbaja Members: David Hornberger, Kevin Lambert, Rachel Kodluck, and Garrett Bachelor Purpose: to design and construct a single-seat off-road vehicle to meet the rules set forth by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). After thorough testing of a prototype vehicle, a production vehicle is fabricated and entered in the international SAE competition. A four will drive vehicle is planned for 2021!
Session 14 - 12:45 to 1 pm… Battery Operated Electric Vehicle (BOLT) http://www.bolt.org.vt.edu/ Member: William Hom Purpose: to design, build and compete an electric motorcycle capable of high performance, that equals or exceeds the performance of a combustion motorcycle. Join us as we help guide the way into the future of electric motorcycle racing.
Session 15 - 1 to 1:15 pm… ASCE Concrete Canoe https://asce.cee.vt.edu/concret e-canoe-team/ Members: Nawras Zalzala, Rachel Johnson Purpose: This one year project involves designing, construction, and paddling a light weight (60lb/ft^3) concrete canoe. At competition the team is judged on an oral presentation, a research paper, canoe display and appearance. Events consist of a men’s and women’s sprint, endurance, and a coed sprint.
Session 16 – 1:15 to 1:30 pm… Design Build Fly! (DBF) https://www.facebook.com/DBF atVirginiaTech Member: Jack Barns Purpose: All student design team led by undergraduate aerospace engineering seniors and assisted by underclassmen of all disciplines and skill sets. The team designs, fabricates, and tests a remote controlled aircraft to compete in the annual AIAA DBF competition.
Session 17 - 1:30 to 1:45 pm… Formula SAE (FSAE) https://vtmotorsports.weebly.com/ Member: Adam Yi Purpose: Formula SAE is an international competition organized by SAE which challenges students to design, build, and test a formula style race car. We compete with over 100 schools every May and June. The team constructs an internal combustion (ICE) vehicle and a totally electric (EV) vehicle!
Session 18 - 1:45 to 2 pm… Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) https://gobblerconnect.vt.edu/org anization/hevt Member: Jacob Levin ➢Purpose: EcoCAR Mobility Challenge is a U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC). DOE, GM, and MathWorks are challenging 12 North American universities to redesign a Chevrolet Blazer into a hybrid-electric vehicle by integrating advanced systems while decreasing energy consumption.
Session 19 - 2 to 2:15 pm… SailBOT https://www.sailbot.aoe.vt.edu/ Member: Blasé Cornett Purpose: to create an unmanned sailboat that navigates through a variety of challenges with limited human control. Team members must incorporate an understanding of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, ship dynamics, electronics, autonomous control, structures, machining, and project management.
Session 20 – 2:15 to 2:30 pm… AISC Steel Bridge https://asce.cee.vt.edu/steel- bridge-team/ Member: John Zeglarski Purpose: design and construct a scale size bridge entirely of structural steel per national ASCE rules which provide a problem statement under which the bridge must be built. The rules call out the required size of the bridge, usually one-tenth actual size, as well as other parameters including member types and sizes, loading requirements, and clearances. The bridge must carry 2400 lbs!
