John Tonkin College Course Offering Years 7-10 2021 Students in Years 7-10 participate in a range of compulsory subjects and programs which provide the foundation for secondary education. It will challenge students to see academic potential in themselves and strive for improved results. In Year 9 and 10 the AVID program includes a strong focus on career development activities to assist students to identify their skills and abilities and match these to career areas where they can be successful. 3
Year 7 Elective Course Descriptions In Year 7 you will be have four compulsory ‘taster’ units each semester. This selection will provide opportunities for you to experience the breadth of the curriculum at John Tonkin College to guide future selections. Science Explorers In this subject students will explore a range of scientific concepts through hands-on activities. From eco-sustainability to robotics, computer programming to chemistry and aquaculture, this course has something for everyone. Home Economics You will love this subject if you have a desire to learn how to cook and use your creativity to make craft products. You will learn how to safely prepare delicious food to share and enjoy! You will gain an understanding about food hygiene and how to prepare tasty, healthy meals. You will have the opportunity to be creative by learning basic sewing and construction skills to make interesting craft products. Digital Technologies You need to use technology to survive in the 21st Century and in this subject, you will learn about coding, networking, and you will be challenged to find solutions to teacher-generated problems. You will have the opportunity to be creative by learning how to utilise digital technologies for design purposes. Japanese Learning a language offers you the opportunity to engage in a global community. This course provides you with an introduction to life in Japan as you explore aspects of Japanese culture such as cooking, martial arts, music and anime while you begin developing Japanese language skills. Materials Design Technology This is a hands-on subject where you will construct interesting small projects. You will learn how to safely use a variety of tools, machines and finishes. You will have the opportunity to work with a range of materials including wood, metal and plastics, and, best of all, you get to take your finished project home. 4
Year 7 Elective Course Descriptions Music This is a fun, creative subject that allows you to learn how to play a variety of instruments at your own pace. You will have the opportunity to create and perform music by yourself or with others. You don’t have to sing, but if you like to use your voice, you will love this subject. You can even join the school choir! You will have the opportunity to apply for separate lessons on a chosen instrument and get involved in numerous extracurricular activities such as assemblies, award ceremonies and community events. Performing Arts You have lots of opportunities to be creative in this subject. You will learn how to use your ideas whilst gaining theatre skills at the same time. You will learn how to use your voice for effect and how to use body language to perform. There is a focus on creating an effective stage and you will be encouraged to gain confidence in your acting ability and to build confidence in others. Visual Art You will be taught how to create interesting art pieces where you can apply your creativity and imagination. This subject will suit anyone who loves to be creative and enjoys painting, drawing or model making. You will learn about different types of art and will acquire a range of skills in creating both 2D and 3D artworks. 5
Year 8 Elective Course Descriptions In Year 8, you are able to select from a range of electives which allow for a more individualised program to be created where you have the opportunity to develop skills in areas of your choice. You can select four electives per semester but must have selections from designated pairs as outlined below. You may choose any one, or more, of these electives: Bushrangers In this subject you will develop your understandings of environmental conservation and sustainability. Through multiple projects, you will work in teams to improve environmental conditions and develop awareness of environmental protection. Bushrangers is a Cadet Unit structure. Debating Do you like to argue? Always like to have your opinion heard? Then the Year 8 Debating course is for you! The Year 8 Debating course will introduce you to the world of competitive debating and provide you with opportunities to develop and use your powers of critical thinking, persuasion and public speaking. Along with in-school debates students will also be offered the opportunity to participate in inter-school and external debating competitions. Willingness to speak publically is a requirement of this course. Digital Technologies (compulsory) You will further develop your knowledge and skills in all aspects of computer networking. You will continue to develop your understanding of computational thinking by engaging in a wide variety of activities. You can use your creativity to explore digital technologies and its uses for design purposes. This is a practical subject and the skills you learn can be applied to all situations where you need to use information technology. Fitness Club This subject promotes a healthy lifestyle and develops your physical fitness and well-being. Through fitness testing, training programs, study of body systems and fitness challenges you will develop your understanding of the importance of physical activity and lifestyle choices. You will have fun by participating in a range of fitness activities. Japanese You will explore the rich culture and language of Japan, with a focus on developing language skills. The cultural study in this unit will broaden your world view and bring aspects of Japanese life to the classroom, including music, food and martial arts. Global Detective Want to know more about different people and places around the world?... then Global Detective is for you! Australia plays a big role in what goes on in other places, and this course gives you the chance to understand why. The world is very diverse - learn about why we can be so different in our approach to things yet share so much together. Many hands-on activities will guide you in investigating our global village. 6
Year 8 Elective Course Descriptions You must choose AT LEAST ONE course from each of the following pairs. Both units from a pair may be selected. A. HOME ECONOMICS and/or MATERIALS DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Home Economics (High Cost) You will love this subject if you have an interest in preparing and eating delicious food. You also have the opportunity to expand on your creative skills by sewing and making craft products. You will learn how to prepare healthy, nutritious food and the best thing is you get to eat it! You will learn the importance of food hygiene and how to present food in an appealing way. Materials Design Technology – Wood Focus (High Cost) You will work on a project that allows you to hone your skills using wood as the main material. You will learn how to use a wide range of tools so you can construct a high quality project piece to take home. You will develop skills in all aspects of woodwork and will understand how different finishes can be used for effect. This is a hands-on subject that allows you to be creative. Materials Design Technology – Metal Focus (High Cost) You will work on a project that allows you to hone your skills using metal as the main material. You will learn how to use a wide range of tools so you can construct a high quality project piece to take home. Year 8 Elective Course Descriptions A. MUSIC and/or PERFORMING ARTS Music This is a fun, creative subject that allows you to learn how to play a variety of instruments at your own pace. You will build on your skills and knowledge from Year 7 and begin to work collaboratively with others so you can make music in an ensemble or band. You will learn how to use technology to improve musical sound and quality. You will have the opportunity to apply for separate lessons on a chosen instrument and get involved in numerous extracurricular activities such as assemblies, award ceremonies and community events. Performing Arts This subject allows you to experience all aspects of the Performing Arts including dance and drama. You will learn basic choreography and different styles of dance. You will engage in drama activities that hone your acting skills and allow you to create believable characters. This is fun subject that encourages self-expression and creativity. B. VISUAL ART and/or MULTIMEDIA Multimedia Are you creative? Like to use technology? Then you need to take Year 8 Multimedia! In the Year 8 Multimedia course, you will learn about the fascinating art of textual adaptation and stop-motion filmmaking. Along with gaining an understanding of the history of this engaging film genre, you will also develop, direct and film your own original stop- motion film! The ability to think creatively and work both independently and collaboratively will be key skills developed throughout this course. Stem Launch! Do you ever wonder how something was made? As a kid, did you enjoy designing and building things? Launch! This subject is for you. Working individually and in teams, you will learn, solve problems, design and make things – your hands will always busy and your brain will be challenged. STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are the foundation of this subject and by taking part you will gain skills that set you up for the future. Visual Arts (High Cost) You will draw on your creativity to develop an individual portfolio of art work. You will be encouraged to explore a range of art mediums and further develop your creative potential by producing artworks to showcase at community and school events. You will learn the skills to produce high quality pieces of art that you can be proud of. 8
Year 9 Elective Course Descriptions In Year 9, you are able to select two electives per semester which you will attend for four periods per week. This will enable you to individualise your program by choosing courses within your areas of interest, provide greater depth of study in each unit, and help to develop skills and knowledge in preparation for senior school studies. Bushrangers This course offers students the opportunities to undertake personal development training while developing their conservation skills and knowledge through involvement in practical nature conservation projects. Bushrangers is a Cadet Unit structure. Childcare (High Cost) This fascinating subject explores how small children develop and how families are so important to the healthy growth of infants. This is a hands-on subject where you will interact with young children and watch them learn through play. You will discover the miracle of conception leading to the wonders of birth. Debating and Public Speaking Are you passionate and interested in world issues? Want your voice to be heard? Then you need to select the Debating and Public Speaking course! The Year 9 Debating and Public Speaking course will provide you with further opportunities to develop and use your powers of critical thinking, persuasion and public speaking. Year 9 Elective Course Descriptions Fitness Club This subject promotes a healthy lifestyle and develops your physical fitness and well-being. You will have fun while participating in a range of fitness activities. Japanese You will explore the rich culture and language of Japan with cultural study as an integral part of the curriculum. In an increasingly globalised world, language provides you with study skills to broaden your world view through greater cultural understanding. This course brings Japan to life in the classroom through role plays, anime, Japanese culture and music, martial arts, cooking and language development. Masterchef (High Cost) You will learn the tricks of the hospitality trade in this subject. There is a focus on basic chef skills and you will gain confidence in presenting food creatively. You will prepare and present food for special school events and gain experience in serving food just like in a real café or restaurant. You will learn basic knife skills and apply appropriate food hygiene. You will demonstrate your ability to work effectively within a team, just like you would if you worked in the hospitality industry. Materials Design Technology - Wood Focus (High Cost) You will work on a project that allows you to hone your skills using wood as the main material. You will learn how to use a wide range of tools so you can construct a high quality project piece to take home. Year 9 Elective Course Descriptions Materials Design Technology - Metals Focus (High Cost) You will work on a project that allows you to hone your skills using metal as the main material. You will learn how to use a wide range of tools so you can construct a high quality project piece to take home. You will develop skills in all aspects of metalwork and will understand how different finishes can be used for effect. This is a hands-on subject that allows you to be creative. Multimedia Ever wondered how the media has the power to influence the way in which we think, act and behave? Well the Year 9 Multimedia course has the answers! In this course, you will learn about the multi-billion-dollar industry of advertising, marketing and promotion. Along with investigating the history and development of advertising over a number of decades, you will be tasked with the challenge of developing your own advertising and marketing campaign in an effort to promote an idea, service or product to make our world a better place for us all. Music This is a fun, creative subject that allows you to develop your skills further by focusing on a particular instrument. You will use technology to enhance your musical compositions and will work collaboratively with other creative musicians to form a band. If you are an expert or a beginner, you will have the opportunity to participate and develop your musical skills. You will be encouraged to become involved in numerous extra-curricular activities such as assemblies, award ceremonies and community events. Outdoor Education (High Cost) You will participate in a range of outdoor and physical activities which may include bush and camping survival skills, cooking, canoeing, bike riding, orienteering and snorkeling. You will have a lot of fun exploring Mandurah’s beautiful waterways and bush settings. You will love this subject if you enjoy being active in the outdoors and in the water. You need to be able to swim for 200 metres. 11
Year 9 Elective Course Descriptions Performing Arts – Dance/Drama This subject allows you to experience all aspects of the Performing Arts including Dance and Drama. You will build on your knowledge of choreography and different styles of dance. There is a focus on movement skills, character development, staging and all aspects of performing for an audience. This is fun subject that encourages self- expression and creativity. Visual Art (High Cost) You will develop and refine your creative and artistic talents through an appreciation of a range of artworks from different historical periods. You will be encouraged to explore a range of art mediums and further develop your creative potential by producing pieces to showcase at community and school events. You will broaden your perspective through visits to galleries where you will learn to appreciate a range of art forms. You will learn the skills to produce high quality pieces of artwork that you can be proud of. 12
Year 10 Elective Course Descriptions In Year 10, you are able to select two electives per semester which you will attend for four periods per week. This will enable you to individualise your program by choosing courses within your areas of interest, provide greater depth of study in each unit, and help to develop skills and knowledge in preparation for senior school studies. Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Whole Year Program (High Cost) This program involves conservation projects, adventure camps, personal development and community service. Further information is provided on the Duke of Edinburgh Award information page. It also embeds the Conservation and Land Management Cert II, which students have the option to complete in Year 11. (See VET section for further information). Business How can you and businesses make money? Explore the tactics used to attract consumer attention to products, including advertising, use of social media, and product design. Learn about how to act and think safe when at work. Money matters! Money is hard to earn, so skills to budget and spend effectively are explored. Extensive use of technology prepares you for the future workplace. Child Development (High Cost) You will further explore the fascinating development of young children and the important impact of nutrition and self- esteem. You will develop an understanding of how children grow and change through play experiences. There is a focus on child health, first aid and toy safety. You will enjoy this subject if you have an interest in child development and/or you wish to pursue a career involving young children. Design and Technology (High Cost) You will work with a range of materials including metal, wood and plastic and you will produce a range of small projects. You will learn how the design process is crucial to the production of high quality models and you will use a variety of tools, fixtures and finishes. You will work in an industry standard workshop and you must be aware of safety requirements and conform to the Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) requirements. Digital Technologies You will learn more sophisticated skills in computational thinking such as precisely and accurately describing problems and using your creativity to find appropriate solutions. You will further develop your knowledge of networked devices and learn how to use them for a broad range of purposes. You will focus on coding, web design and graphics manipulation. This subject will prepare you for enrolment in an Information Technologies course in senior school. 13
Year 10 Elective Course Descriptions Drama Whether you are a beginner or a strong performer, this course will lead to studying Drama at the senior school General level in both performance and backstage roles. You will develop confidence and explore improvisation, physical theatre, production design, different stages in theatre history, and learn to use stage makeup and special effects. You need to be aware that there are essential practical and written components in this subject. Fitness for Life This course includes fitness techniques and testing, training programs, fitness challenges, training others to improve their fitness and participation in workout sessions. You will learn all aspects of fitness and participate in a range of activities. Japanese This Year 10 Japanese elective builds on the topics covered in Years 7, 8 and 9 Japanese. The study of Japanese culture is an integral part of the curriculum. You will continue to develop and refine your reading and writing skills through exposure to a range of documents in the Japanese script and a structured study of grammar. Multimedia Lights, camera, action! Get ready to star in your own media production in the Year 10 Multimedia course. The Year 10 Multimedia course focuses on the genres of music videos and mockumentary films. Throughout the course you will develop your understanding of the history of these two extremely popular media genres, as well as the concepts of parody and satire, and have the opportunity to film your own productions as you learn how to use film technology and editing software. Critical and creative thinking are key aspects of this course. Music You will become a proficient performer on a chosen instrument and perform in a variety of ensembles musical and bands. You will further develop your understanding of musical theory and your use of technology will improve composition and sound. All musical abilities will be catered for so you don’t have to be an expert. You will have fun collaborating with other musicians to create a great sound! You will be encouraged to get involved in numerous extra- curricular activities such as assemblies, award ceremonies and community events. Outdoor Education (High Cost) If you have a love of the outdoors in all weather conditions this course is for you. You will learn camping skills, build strong relationships through teamwork and leadership, learn the basics of roping and participate in water-based activities including snorkeling, body boarding and sea kayaking. You MUST be able to swim 200m, to participate in this course 14
Year 10 Elective Course Descriptions Photography (High Cost) This is an interesting, hands-on subject that allows you to explore some of the Photography techniques developed over time. You will learn how photographs can be developed in a traditional darkroom and participate in project work using the latest digital technologies. You will learn the basics of good image composition and produce fantastic prints. You will discover that great photographs can be produced by using everyday technology that is accessible to most of us. Tourism We all love holidays! Learn about the wonders of our world, the cool places people choose to visit, thrilling attractions, foods and other exciting cultural experiences that can be explored. Want to work in the tourism industry in the future? Gain the foundations for working with customers, both within Australia, and those from overseas, who visit the Peel region. Did you know? - Tourism excellence is a key focus of our local future blueprint. Tourism, hospitality and events are major sources of employment in Mandurah and surrounding areas. Visual Art (High Cost) This hands-on subject focuses on the elements and principles of Art and Design. You will explore a range of artworks across a diverse range of styles and cultures. You will broaden your art experience by participating in the process of art exhibitions and by developing your portfolio in preparation for senior school. This course will provide you with a firm foundation for developing creative understandings and no previous art experience is required. You will be encouraged to explore your creative side and be taught the skills to produce high quality pieces of art. World Table Tour (High Cost) You will be introduced to the cuisines and cultures of the world through the exciting exploration of different countries. You will plan and prepare delicious food that originates from a different country each week and the best part is, you get to eat it! You must be willing to engage in the important theory aspect of the course as well as the practical. 15
Duke of Edinburgh Award Bush Ranger Cadets Experiences that last a lifetime with The Duke of Ed! If you are passionate about the natural environment, want some adventure and want to connect with others through a range of new experiences, then completing the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award is for you. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an elective for Year 10s and embedded into the Year 9 Surf Science Program. Closely linked to this award is the Bush Rangers elective, which is currently offered in Year 8 & 9. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an international, structured, self- development program comprising of four sections; skill, physical recreation, service and adventurous journey. The program connects you with other young people, adult mentors and with the wider community. Through completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, you will be empowered to challenge yourself and realise your true potential. You will meet new people, discover your sense of adventure and create unforgettable memories along the way. You will undertake various physical activities such as surfing, mountain biking and snorkeling and learn new skills including lifesaving while completing the Bronze Medallion Lifesaving Award. You will volunteer with local community organisations and participate in conservation and wildlife projects through the Bush Rangers Cadet Program. You also develop leadership skills and team work through adventure/camping activities. Self-reliance and commitment, sharing, adventure, cooperation and organisation skills are just some of the personal qualities developed through participation – skills which not only support your learning at school but also prepare you for work and study opportunities after school. Through The Duke of Edinburgh Award program at John Tonkin College, more than 100 students have gained skills for life as they complete the sections of the award. This course is a High Cost elective. Additional fees will apply to the CLM Cert II component. 16
John Tonkin College Specialist Surf Science Program Years 7 - 9 2021 This Department of Education Approved Surf Science Specialist Program has a focus on Marine and Outdoor Education Studies for Year 7-9 students. The program accommodates these students within an academically challenging pathway and develops students who have a passion for the outdoors and environment. The students work in outstanding educational facilities throughout the college and community, including the purpose- built John Tonkin College Marine and Maritime Centre at Dawesville. They have access to well-equipped Science Laboratories, IT ready classrooms, and a bus to enable field work such that the marine/coastal environment forms an extended classroom in which students work and learn. Students within the Specialist Surf Science Program will have expert teaching within each of the curriculum disciplines and will enjoy the support of many professional and community based organisations, including Coast Care WA, St John's Ambulance, Mandurah Make Place, Eco Ocean, AQUA, the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Curtin University, Murdoch University, the City of Mandurah, Peel Harvey Catchment Council, Mandurah Environment and Heritage Group and Tangaroa Blue. 17
Program Outline Year 7, 8 and 9 students will be taught the WA Curriculum in all subject areas, however, they will have a focus in Outdoor and Marine Science Education. From Year 7-9, students will be actively involved in Outdoor Education. They will participate in stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing and other water-based activities. Students will attend excursions and camps to enhance these skills and obtain various water qualifications throughout their years in Surf Science including the Bronze Medallion, First Aid and Skippers ticket. Marine Science is a focus within the Surf Science program and students will have 1-2 lessons each week in this area. This will enhance their knowledge on marine life, and environmental conservation and will involve students being actively engaged in Marine Science projects such as The Estuary Guardians Fin Guide and Dolphin Forums, fishing line bins, and the Tangaroa Blue Marine Debris, Tree Planting and the Shorebird and Black Bream programs. Students in the Surf Science program should have a keen interest in outdoor recreation, environmental conservation and contributing to the community. They are strongly encouraged to choose elective courses based on these interests. This includes Bushrangers, Marine and Outdoor Education and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Selection Process The Surf Science program is for selected students based on academic performance, interest and appropriately developed self-management skills. An interview process is used in determining student suitability for the program. Initial application forms can be collected from John Tonkin College – Tindale Campus, 35 Gibla St, Mandurah. Application achievement guidelines: Achievement with at least C grade achievement in all Subjects. Higher grades will be best suited for the program (confirmed by final report) NAPLAN results reflecting achievement at standard. Higher NAPLAN results will be best suited for the program. Strong records of positive and appropriate behaviour. Regular attendance. Leadership qualities such as Student Councillor, Faction Captain and Head Boy/Girl. References from staff. Strong interest and involvement in water based, environmental and/or local community activities. Satisfactory swimming ability. 18
Education Support Centre Facilities The John Tonkin College Education Support Centre (ESC) is located at the Mandurah Education and Training Campus and offers a range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways, in conjunction with the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) courses, endorsed programs, ASDAN and some internally programmed and assessed subjects, for Years 11 and 12 students. All ESC students participate in FESA cadets during school hours. The Education Support Centre is only able to enrol students who satisfy the Department of Education‘s criteria for placement into these specialized learning centres. Please refer to the guidelines available on the Department of Education‘s Inclusive Education web site: http://det.wa.edu.au/policies/detcms/navigation/school- management/inclusive-education/ The Education Support Centre collaborates with local high schools including Halls Head Community College Education Support Centre, John Tonkin College, Coodanup Community College and Comet Bay College, to provide a thorough transition program for eligible students in the Peel region. John Tonkin College and the ESC work together to provide dynamic, inclusive programs which cater for all students with disabilities. This includes access to John Tonkin College courses for Centre students and the reverse integration for John Tonkin College students with mild disabilities to participate in practical courses offered by the Education Support Centre, such as Training WA and Cadets.
