Security Fourways Gardens Estate - Security starts at home Security: Officer of the Month – July 2018 Tumelo Sello It’s an awesome feeling living in a place where security is one of the last things you need to worry about. When you turn to the left or right at the big traffic circle – you think goodness what a relief, I’m home safe! When one lives in a gated community, one tends to forget about one’s own personal security – specifically relating to your personal space and those you invite into your home. A few tips for Personal Security: • Ensure that all persons employed by you in your home have been SAPS cleared and have all the correct documentation. They must be registered onto the biometric system for your property. • Contractors conducting work or providing a quotation for work to be undertaken at your home must have the correct documentation. Only use reputable companies with references. Also, ensure that you are aware of the number of persons coming to your home at all times and that they are under constant supervision. • Have an alarm or panic system installed at your home. In the event of an emergency, a radio signal from your alarm or panic system goes to the on-site Control Room much quicker than a phone call. Remember to test this system on a regular basis. • Know what is happening in and around your home. With the world of technology moving at an ever-increasing pace, one can remotely monitor what is happening on your property from anywhere in the world. • Ensure that when leaving your home, all doors and gates are locked. • Do not leave vehicles unlocked for a passer-by to be tempted. • Do not leave garage doors unlocked or wide open for any passer- by to be tempted. • When giving items to your employees such as furniture, Stay in touch equipment, crockery etc., ensure that you provide them with a letter/pass-out form for them to exit the Estate with the items. We look forward to suggestions and (The Permit Office will also call you to confirm this.) recommendations via the General • Ensure that your childminder/nanny knows how to use the alarm or panic system. ❁I FWG Gardening Club FOURWAYS GARDENS GARDENING CLUB an Leo, owner of LAWN CARE PLUS (Lawn2Lawn) came to share some secrets to achieving a fabulous, enviable lawn. Ian and his teams have been serving clients in Fourways Gardens and Dainfern for 16 years, so is very familiar with the type of soil environment we have here which typically is acidic. Lawns need to be watered once a week in winter and three times per week in summer, hopefully with harvested rainwater or grey water. BY FRANCESCA BEATTIE There are many different types of lawn but KIKUYU and LM are the most common. Ian prefers KIKUYU. Now is the time to prepare your lawn for spring and summer. Ian shared with us the most important four actions to take: 1. SCARIFY: The lawn has a build-up of dead thatch from winter and previous summer mowing which must be lifted and removed as it stops water, oxygen and nutrients from getting to the root zone. Verticutting/de-thatching is a service that Lawn Care offers – lawnmowers set at lowest level are what most of us do, however it is not ideal. 2. AERATION: While Ian’s teams use specific machines, a garden fork used over the lawn to lift the turf will help. Spike rollers are the old-fashioned way and not ideal as they compact the lawn rather than aerate it. COMMON LAWN PROBLEMS: 3. FERTILISE: Ian recommends a 5:1:5 1. Estate News PRUNING Pruning is essential for healthy growth as it encourages shrubs to produce more blossoms. Amateur gardeners are often put off pruning because they don’t understand why its necessary and how its done. Once you understand that pruning allows you to shape and strengthen shrubs and trees, you’ll be keen to perform this task on an annual basis. GOOD TO KNOW TIPS FOR PRUNING If you’re pruning a variety of plants, disinfect your tools with vinegar to prevent the risk of cross- infection. Before you begin, consider what shape you’d like your shrubs to take. This is very much like giving your plants a haircut, so you should start off conservatively, trimming off a little at a time. • Remove damaged branches, as well as straggly stems. • Cut away any branches that cross over or rub against each other • Follow the stem back to their origin the cut away neatly. Cutaway stem growing out from large branches or trunk of the shrub or tree. The idea is to thin out the plant for more growth and to allow more light to reach the new growth. • Trim to the desired shape to give your plant a strong structure on which to base future growth. • Apply plant sealer to the cut edges to prevent the risk of infection of disease. They’d been suspected in the park but never confirmed for they are often seen further east in Mozambique and in KwaZulu. Why the name: Lake Panic? There are several stories but the true one dates Jacana back to 1975 when the earthen dam wall was completed across Mafunyana Creek, a kilometre or so from the club. The creek’s name commemorates Louis Steyn, warden of Kruger Park from 1953 to 1961 whose Shangaan nickname was Mafunyana – Shangaan for “one who eats with gusto”. The wall had just been completed and the dam was filling nicely when the mother of all tropical thunder storms dumped several million tons of water into the catchment and the river rose within minutes to a height that alarmed everybody – especially those behind the project who were certain the dam would burst. The panic could have been measured on the Richter Scale. But the dam held. Squacco Heron Grey Heron FOOTNOTE: Talking of birding hotspots, Return Africa’s Pafuri Camp were 2018 BBD begins.
