FROM THE FOUNDATION LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE FOUNDATION hange is part of our lives and if we embrace it as God’s will, then it is a beautiful experience. For the last twenty years, I have been blessed by the donors, leaders, volunteers, friends and my staff at Ascension St. Vincent’s. We have worked together to bring hope and healing to our community in ever- changing ways. Inspiring, growing, planning… together the possibilities have been endless. At age 14, I was a teenage volunteer “candy striper” at Ascension St. Vincent’s. You might say, it was the beginning of a love-story with Ascension St. Vincent’s Mission and the Daughters of Charity. Little did I Jane R. Lanier, CFRE, Foundation President & CDO know that only a few years later, I would have the Thomas R. “Mac” McGehee, Jr., Foundation Board Chair opportunity to serve alongside the best leaders in our Virginia Hall, Incoming Foundation President & CDO city, to further that Mission. INNOVATION IN MEDICINE FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM’S TEACHING KITCHEN Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program The Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program was established in 1972. The program emphasizes continuity, full-spectrum care, and is designed to develop critical clinical skills and decision-making abilities. The program is staffed by fifteen full-time faculty physicians who are dedicated to resident education. The Family Medicine Residency Program’s Teaching Kitchen The Teaching Kitchen is a project inspired by the Healthy Kitchens Healthy Lives conference whose goal is to address health management and disease prevention through how and what we eat. Jennifer Shonk, D.O., a third year Family Medicine Resident, attended this conference in 2018, and first learned of the Teaching Kitchen. Its goal is to blend people’s love for preparing beautiful, delicious, budget friendly food with the need to actively integrate this lifestyle change as part of chronic illness management and disease prevention. The Teaching Kitchen project at Ascension St. Vincent’s was awarded funds from the Ascension St. Vincent’s Physicians Giving Society to purchase their own Teaching Kitchen that would bring practical ways to incorporate these culinary concepts into a clinical Jennifer Shonk, D.O., Sonya Dominguez, M.D. (Associate setting at the Family Medicine Center. Each noontime session with Program Director), Jane R. Lanier, David McInnes, M.D. the Teaching Kitchen has a theme with the goal to introduce new (Program Director), and Stephanie Hill, M.D. foods, recipes, and skills while learning how to prepare affordable, nutritious, and delicious plant-based dishes. The program has even partnered with Florida State College of Jacksonville (FSCJ) culinary students and University of Florida pediatric residents to expand the scope and reach of the program. Jane Lanier Legacy Award On May 29, 2019 the Family Medicine Residency Program celebrated the work and retirement of Jane R. Lanier, CFRE, President and CDO of St. Vincent’s Foundation. She, along with many members of the Family Medicine Residency Program participated in a Teaching Kitchen session where they learned to make fruit dessert pizza, among other delicious and healthy foods. At the event, Jane was given the Jane Lanier Legacy Award. It was created to honor Jane for the numerous contributions she has made to the residency program, as well as the community at large. She was instrumental in securing the beautiful Family Medicine Center building, the Bacardi Lounge which is the resident educational center, literacy programs, our Behavioral Health Fellowship, and the Teaching Kitchen, to name a few. The Jane Lanier Legacy Award will be awarded to a graduating third year Family Medicine resident who shows commitment to improve the community they serve through quality improvement, innovation, or outreach with special attention to the poor and vulnerable. Inscribed on the award is a quote from Ghandi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It will be awarded by the Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Faculty at graduations going forward. PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT INNOVATIVE OUTREACH PROGRAMS FUNDED BY PHILANTHROPY Kids Together Against Cancer Kids Together Against Cancer (KTAC) is a free support program that helps the children of parents or caregivers that are facing a cancer diagnosis. Family Night! is a KTAC event that gives families a chance to eat a family dinner together, participate in an art activity, and commune with others sharing a similar experience with a parent’s cancer diagnosis. In March, these special families came together to paint colorful tiles that were then brought together, signifying that we are all pieces of a larger puzzle in our community. Medical Mission at Home Medical Mission at Home is a daylong annual event in which hundreds of volunteer clinicians, social service providers, and others provide free medical and social services to hundreds of community residents in need. This event uses the “medical mission” concept that typically provides healthcare to the poor in foreign countries, but instead addresses healthcare disparities here in our own community. Not only is basic healthcare provided at the event, we work to establish medical homes that provide a continuum of care for each person far beyond the confines of this day. In April, we provided more than 1,200 services to 377 individuals in need. It was an honor to help each of them regain control of their health and give them hope.
