  Observations
  1. Working with a dedicated consultant based in Tokyo , in cooperation with
UNIDO ITPO Tokyo staff, was essential for the project
  2. Constant communication between project management at UNIDO HQ,
UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, NCPCs, experts in Indonesia and Austria and
companies in Africa contributed to the project’s success
  3. Support of the Japanese government appreciated by private sector
stakeholders and builds confidence to promote Japanese technologies
  4. Japanese companies show interest for business partnerships in Africa, no
     matter how large or small

                                                                           13
Technology Promotion from Japan: LCCR (4)
  Tips
  1. Japanese companies require detailed information about specifications for
the application of each technology, to come up with an appropriate
     estimate/quotation, which is sometimes challenging
  2. Japanese companies consider maintenance and parts supply to be able to
     make a cost estimate
  3. Japanese technology cost estimates are higher at first, but usually include
longer term trouble shooting costs built-in
  4. Japanese companies may introduce other companies to offer a solution
  5. Japanese companies want to take part in projects in your country,
however need patience and long term view
  6. Relationship building and trust is of utmost importance

                                                                             14
