Rot ary Yout h Leadershi p Award This week, two Year 11 students visited the Turton Rotary Club to give thanks for their sponsorship of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. In July, Destiny and Saaemah travelled to Pettypool (in Cheshire) to spend 6 days developing skills including planning, teamwork and organisation as they worked with young people from across the north west to build a mini adventure playground. The girls gave a short presentation to the members of the club and presented the President with an honorary Learn Dream Achieve badge on behalf on Sharples School. Thanks again to Turton Rotary for sponsoring this opportunity for our students
Aut ot rader Boss advi ses Year 10 st udent s Last week, the CEO of Autotrader visited Sharples to speak to Year 10 on his life experiences and to advise them on the coming years. His tips for success included getting out to see the wide world, joining clubs and activities as employers want to see more than good exam results. Good advice indeed! Macmi llan Chari t y Bake Sale On Tuesday we held a bake sale in aid of Macmillan Cancer Charity. The baking was led by Year 7 student Lewis Makin who had the idea to sell cakes in memory of family members. The cake sale raised a fantastic £300. Well done and thanks everyone who took part.
Pri mary School Super Sci ence This week we welcomed visitors from The Oaks and St Paul?s to do some science with us! Year 2s, from The Oaks, enjoyed a session on Materials Science where they made slime and toasted marshmallows on the Bunsen burner! Year 4s, from St Paul?s, learned all about sound. They made their own musical instruments and investigated the sounds made by different elastic bands! Macbet h Theat re Tri p On Monday, a selection of students went to The Lowry Theatre to see a performance of William Shakespeare?s Macbeth. This new production retold the story of Shakespeare?s classic tragedy however, it had a post-apocalyptic twist! The students enjoyed their evening which was filled with anarchy and uncertainty.
Year 10 Duke of Edi nburgh's Award deadli ne f or appli cat i ons. As a reminder for students and parents/carers, the deadline for Year 10 students to hand in their applications to take part in the DofE Bronze Award programme this year is the end of the day on Monday 8th October. Applications to Mr Davies please. For further information about the DofE programme or the applications process please see the DofE section of the school website at www.sharplesschool.co.uk/duke-of-edinburgh/ or email Mr Davies at i.davies@sharplesschool.co.uk . Foot ball Report The Year 9 football team had a difficult draw against Rivington and Blackrod on Monday in the Bolton Cup. Rivington took an early lead and Sharples struggled to recover. Daniel Bankole looked dangerous upfront and impressed on his first game of the season. Cole Bridge went close crashing his free kick against the crossbar and then Sharples eventually found the net with a well worked goal. It was only to be a consolation as Sharples crashed out of the cup. The following day, Year 10 were looking to progress to the next round of the cup. It was a good performance by the team with Edison excelling at the back and Matthew Senior slotting home from the penalty spot. Overall, it was a good well fought performance but Sharples ran out of steam towards the end allowing St Catherine?s to capitalise. They scored two second half goals which won the game. The final result was 4-2. Sharples should be proud as they played some good football. Unfortunately, the Year 7 and 8 game was postponed by Kearsley until the following week. However, it was fantastic to see 30 students from both years still turn up to football practice in preparation for next week. Both Year 7 and 8 have 2 fixtures next week as they look to build on their positive start to the season.
