We will be looking forward to seeing all those members that will be attending. It would be great if many of you could go. As a member of the National board, I wish to thank each of you for being a part of our organization. Our Associate Secretaries are doing a fantastic job. This past year was not an active one for visitors; however, I believe that possibly this year or the next, we will begin to have many visitors and/or USA members visiting other sections. Thank you to our region board members for all the work you do for your members. Kudos goes to our Membership Coordinator, Laura Beattie, for the tremendous job she is doing. As the previous Membership Coordinator, I know the huge amount of work she does for our organization and appreciate it wholeheartedly. Lastly, thank you to the National board for the work we have done and continue to do for the IPA Section. I am hoping that this year we will all be able to travel, get together for meetings, events and activities and demonstrate to each other the true meaning of “Servo per Amikeco.” 6 IPA National Reporter 1st Quarter 2021

SPECIAL FEATURE : We Will Never Forget We will never forget I William T. Costigan - Sergeant, NCPD Ret. IPA Nassau Region 5 Members with parents of Anthony Dwyer, Midtown South, NYPD Iwords have been to many Police Officer funerals during my career, and the “we will never forget” are said over and over again. These words bring much comfort to the family, Department, and colleagues. In January 2018, I set out to locate the final burial location of the 50 members of the Nassau County Police Department in New York. I quickly found out that the “we will never forget” promise does not last all that long. I was able to find most of our lost souls through websites and old newspaper articles. Some were very hard to find and I set out to see if I could pinpoint the locations. It took a year, but we did it. Some officers were out of state in Georgia and Florida, some were in New York City, and many were in the two National Cemeteries, Pinelawn and Calverton. Now, I wanted to do something to honor those souls. I called some of the people that I had worked with and they were more than willing to come on board and help. Six of us met at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, NY. We located the graves of the fallen officers dating back to the 1920’s. 8 IPA National Reporter 1st Quarter 2021
Armed with weed whackers, rakes, and scrub brushes, we spent a few hours cleaning up the gravesites, saying a prayer, reading a brief bio, and feeling humbled. Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder was with us and posted a photo online. My phone began to ring. “Let me know the next time you do it.” In the following days we visited other cemeteries. In a small-town cemetery, we finally located the gravestone of Patrolman Alexander Benedict, a veteran of WWI, who died in 1939. The stone lay flat, covered in grass and dirt. We cleaned it up, left a blue stone, a blue bow. One of our IPA members, Craig Braun, a retired Police Officer who was also a licensed funeral director, was able to work with the Veterans Administration to have the stone replaced. The cemetery notified us that there was an outstanding bill for maintenance in arrears of $6,000, dating back to 1952. A determined Craig connected with Town Councilman, Anthony D’Esposito, retired NYPD. The Councilman drafted legislation giving all police officers, killed in the line of duty, an exemption from all fees past and future. I put in a request to IPA Nassau Region 5 if they would assist the following year, 2020. Without hesitation they approved. We waited for the weather to break and on our first day we had 15 volunteers. We added the graves of Village Police Officers, Sherriff’s Department, and any other police grave we came across. We hosted a breakfast to raise funds and the response was overwhelming. All of our benevolent organization made donations. The NY Islanders Hockey Team donated loads of raffle prizes. The membership of IPA Nassau Region 5 began to increase after years of decline, and everyone we came in contact with wanted to be part of this cause. There were two graves located in Georgia and Florida. In Florida, I was able to visit the grave myself. I reached out and called our friends in the Cobb County, Atlanta area. IPA member, Mark Matthews responded. Mark and his wife drove the hour to Pine Mountain, located the grave of Michael Kavanaugh, then cleaned the site and placed a blue ribbon. In return, Nassau Region 5 tended to the grave of Cobb County Police Officer, Stephen Gilmer, killed in 1999 and buried on Long Island. Today, through the efforts of our members, we can finally say, “We will never forget.” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder (standing) with Retired PO Daniel Greer who happened to be buried next to PO Robert Holy Sepulchre Chief, Mike Crawford Sorrentino, NYPD at Pinelawn Cemetery Cemetery, Coram, NY PO Michael Kavanaugh, buried at Pine Mountain, GA Pinelawn National Cemetery Retired Chief, Mike Crawford and PO Kent Bush

REGULAR FEATURE : IPA News IPA Collectors Facebook Group It is well known that in our Association there are many members who collect and trade police and IPA badges, emblems, objects, etc. as a hobby. Many colleagues ask to exchange, buy or request such items from their section, which then enhance private or even public collections. We noticed that many small groups have been created on Facebook for this purpose, but that they are scattered and not so well known, leaving members with a sometimes long and drawn-out search process. For this reason the IPA Socio-Cultural Commission has created an official Facebook group, recognised by the IEB, which all members interested in collecting/exchanging police insignia can join. The name of the group is IPA COLLECTORS GROUP (OFFICIAL). IBZ Gimborn Podcasts For a direct link go to “IPA Collectors Group (Official)” We are happy to present you our first IBZ Gimborn Podcast! REGULAR FEATURE : RVing by Donald Fredricks FAITHFULL RVING PLACES TO SEE. Our hopes are for better times and places for camping in the year 2021, than the past year. For the covid-19 virus was not kind to our RV community members. It may have raised the question, why us God? However, with several vaccines well into distribution and a plethora of first time campers hitting the roads and campground in '21, this should be a booming year for campers. For believers there are many places of interest which should be added to your scheduled planning this year of restora- tion of our belief in both camping and God. We have personally enjoyed our visits to these recommended ventures. The Great Passion Play, located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas is “America’s #1 Attended Outdoor Drama” according to the Institute of Outdoor Theater and Drama of East Carolina University at Greenville. Eureka Springs is just the place to relive The Greatest Story Ever Told! The Play at 8:30pm (7:30pm after Labor Day) is not the only thing to see and do though. The Christ of the Ozarks, the Holy Land Tour, Moses in the Wilderness, a section of the Berlin Wall, the Church in the Grove, the Bible Museum, the Noah’s Ark Park Petting Zoo, and the Sacred Arts Museum, God with Us Movie, Hiking Trails, and Mountain Bike Trails are also on the grounds and are open ALL YEAR LONG! Noah’s Ark Encounter. Prepare to be blown away as you explore the life-sized reconstruction of Noah’s Ark. Built ac- cording to the dimensions given in the Bible. The Ark Encounter is a jaw-dropping structure you’ll want to bring your whole family to see. Located at: #1 Ark Encounter Drive Williamstown, KY 41097 just west of the intersection of KY-36 and I-75 (at exit 154). The Bible Story of Noah’s Ark is one of the few Bible stories most people recognize. But how does the popular story compare with what the Bible says? How Big Was Noah’s Ark? Few wooden ships have ever come close to the size of Noah’s Ark. It was almost one and a half football fields long and higher than a modern four-story house! Looking up at the massive structure and incredible workmanship of the hull is only the beginning of your en- counter with the Ark. Their commitment to historical accuracy and artistic excellence continues inside on three decks full of beautifully crafted teaching exhibits that will inspire you to think differently about the biblical account of Noah’s Ark. There are hundreds of exhibits to photograph or read as your explorations amaze you and shape your thinking about the possibilities of if it really could have happened or is it just a well told story. The Shrine of the Christ’s Passion. Located at 10630 Wicker Avenue (U.S. 41) in St. John, Indiana, The Shrine of the Christ’s Passion is a multi-media interactive, half-mile winding Prayer Trail that depicts the last days of Jesus Christ’s life. Forty life-size bronze sculptures in a tranquil setting, complete with beautiful music and amazingly sculptured gar- dens allow visitors to experience the story of the crucifixion and resurrection as never before! Chicago broadcaster Bill Kurtis narrates the audio recordings that you hear at listening stations along the path. Construction on the interactive winding pathway began in 2001 and included 3,000 yards of concrete, approximately 200 semi loads of boulders and more than 1,000 trees and bushes. Created by Texas artist Mickey Wells, 40 life-size bronze sculptures, weighing 300 to 700 pounds, vividly tell the story of the last days of Christ. These are only three places we can recommend from our general travels. Over the years we have visited at least one hundred religious places, not necessarily for religious beliefs, but interesting sites of knowledge and education while camping in the local area. Each just as interesting as the local museums, towns, fairs, sporting events, music concerts providing the historical, cultural and general information welcoming us to our current campground. For whatever reason it adds to our ventures along the road in search of memories. TWILIGHT FOR CAMPING? This is an opinion piece, please accept it as that. The Twilight for Camping may be where the rubber hits the road for us RVers. As fuel prices begin to rise our cost of course will also limit our dreams and activities. However, that may not be the worst of our problems, as the move away from fossil fuels and to alternate energy sources will greatly alter or end the RVing dreams as we know them. Yes, we have been moving towards solar powering our electrical system in our rigs, but that is for our electrical systems when parked. The automotive and trucking industry are making headway in the direction of battery-powered shorter distance vehicles. But we have not yet seen any movement in that direction for RVers and our abilities to travel between home and camping areas for the distances we require. With millions of RVs on the road the cost of conversions to electric motors are sure to price most of us out of market. I do not know if any RV manufacturer is even developing a battery-powered RV yet. Without the fuel availability and at what cost the question arises what will we do with our RVs? In closing I strongly encourage those looking to purchase a RV to wait until we better understand this how current trends will fully impact camping and the RV industry as a whole. Don’t consider it as an investment only to be stuck with an RV vehicle and a high-priced loan you cannot afford. Praying my concerns prove me wrong. - Donald Fredricks
REGULAR FEATURE : Hobbies by JJ Sullivan Spending Time at Home Many of us are spending a lot of time at home. The covid-19 virus has changed our lives in many ways. With all this extra time we have to keep occupied. There are many ways to keep ourselves busy. Reading, cooking, painting are just a few. I spend time with my hobbies. Yes, you can have more than one. In New York City the restaurants are closed to indoor dining. Some places have opened small outdoor eating areas, but when it’s cold, outside it's better to stay at home. Looking for cooking ideas? The internet is a great place to find recipes with instructions, or you can experiment. Create a new dish that is different. Salads are a great way to eat healthy. Make one with items you never ate before and give it a new name. Don't like cooking in the oven? Try the microwave. Hint: microwave on a safe paper plate and you won't have to clean a dinner plate. I cook bacon in the microwave on paper towels and a paper plate. Don't overcook the bacon. It will come out crisp with no grease. Throw away the paper towels that have absorbed the grease and enjoy. After dinner pick up a book and read it. You probably have one or more books you been meaning to read and now's the time. Most libraries are open so you can find something of interest. Ordering books through the mail is easy and you won't have to leave home. When finished reading it, pass it on. Exchanging books is a great way to keeping them out of landfills. Write a book! It probably won't become a best seller but if you write about your everyday life it will be a great story for your future descendants to read. Having extra time to spend can be an opportunity for you to start on a new and different direction to try new things. Let me see, shall I read a book or try a new recipe? I'm hungry, what should I create? 18 IPA National Reporter 4th Quarter 2020
