Courses Calendar from 01/02/2021 to 26/11/2021 Course information Courses listed represent courses that will be offered via Zoom, Skype, email, outdoors and off campus. Courses offered via Zoom are listed with ZM at the beginning of the title. Some of these courses will return to face-to-face when practicable, some will be offered via Zoom for the whole year and this is noted in the course description. This means that it will be much easier for you to gain a place in some of our popular courses. If your favourite course is not offered in Term 1, please be patient. Some tutors are waiting for a return to face-to-face classes later in the year before they offer their courses. We will keep you informed of developments. Important dates 20 January (from 10.00 am) you may enrol in up to 2 courses, including not more than ONE Modern Language (French, German, Italian, or Spanish), plus any Volunteer courses. 25 January (from 10.00 am) all course restrictions are lifted, and you can enrol wherever there are places available. 1 February Classes commence All enrolment and payment will be on-line. Courses Calendar from 01/02/2021 to 26/11/2021 Art - Practical 21ART01: ZM Watercolour for Beginners Type: Long Course Dates: 04/02/2021 - 25/11/2021 Frequency: Weekly Course, Thu 14:00 - 16:00 Location: Zoom internet delivery Tutor: Jan Oliver Excludes school holidays. This is an introductory tutored class for those who have not used watercolour before or would like a revision. It will utilise Zoom for first term and possibly outside work, with regulations permitting. Various techniques will be introduced to develop skills in mixing and using paint, using different brushes, papers and tools, including plastic Yupo, salt, masking fluid, pen and wash, and charcoal so students can produce landscapes, still life and flower paintings, while avoiding 'mud' or boredom. We have lots of fun in a supportive environment. A list of materials is available from the U3AM website (www.u3amornington.com.au/courses/course-resources/). 21ART02: ZM Watercolour - Intermediate Type: Long Course Dates: 03/02/2021 - 24/11/2021 Frequency: Weekly Course, Wed 14:00 - 16:00 Location: Zoom internet delivery Tutor: Jan Oliver Excludes school holidays. This large class will use Zoom plus email for the first term 2021 and we may be able to meet in the Hall if regulations permit. Advanced students will be encouraged to share their techniques with the class. Members must have completed Watercolour for Beginners or Intermediate so you can apply basic techniques, mix colours and have appropriate watercolour equipment to build on techniques and methods used previously. Includes outside painting, weather and regulations permitting. Course covers abstract, landscape, cartoons and portraiture and comparison of Australian and overseas artists. It may include experimental use of different papers such as rice and banana, canvas and boards with watercolour paints, pencils, charcoal and pen and includes some acrylic and multimedia work. All members will be waitlisted for this course As there is no Advanced Watercolour class in 2021, advanced students are welcome to join this group and assist in tutoring. 35 When F2F, venue changes to Hall, max may remain TBA 21ART03: ZM Mixed Media-SELF HELP Zoom Type: Long Course Dates: 05/02/2021 - 26/11/2021 Frequency: Weekly Course, Fri 10:30 - 12:30 Location: Zoom internet delivery Tutor: Maryanne MacPhee Includes school holidays. This course provides great interaction between artists using any medium except oils. Offered by email in Term 1. This is an introductory program looking at the events and ideas that have shaped the world in which we live. The program refers to "Underpinnings of Western Culture" viz. the Judaic Tradition; Ancient Greek Philosophy, Language and Culture; and Roman Traditions and Culture. A range of other areas follow viz. theology and religion; great works of western music; rise of western science; political literature and philosophy; modern economic theory; great works of western art and architecture; age of reason; revolution and rights; Anglo-American democracies; the novel; and the Augustan Age of English Literature. The approach will be round table/discussion. The course will be offered by email until Face to Face classes resume. This course will refresh you on Zoom basics and highlight a few new features. Questions such as "My menu keeps disappearing, how can I stop that?"; "How can I change my displayed name?"; "How can I stop my name changing each time I join a meeting?"' "How can I change the Zoom view on my tablet?"; "How can I keep the speaker on screen all the time?"; "How can I show my photos to my family?" and many more issues will be covered. Come to the course prepared with the features of Zoom about which you would like to learn, and/or the problems you are experiencing and need a solution. The course will cover the basics of Zoom plus sharing content, such as photos, and starting and running your own meeting. The steps are relatively simple and the price for Photobooks is now quite reasonable. You will be able to make books of your travels, celebrations, family memories and special events. The coffee table style books capture those special times for future browsing. The tutor will contact participants before the program, with instructions, so they are able to download for free the required computer software. TED Talks is a series of TV talks spreading ideas and messages from experts in their fields. Topics can include environment, social issues, life, science, health or whatever the class decides. Members will watch a film or films on SBS or Kanopy or similar for discussion on Zoom at our monthly meeting. The films will be art house films that include both foreign language (subtitled) and English language films. Some of the films have themes that may be confronting. 21FIL02: ZM The Flicks Type: Long Course Dates: 04/02/2021 - 04/11/2021 Frequency: Monthly, Thu 17:00 - 18:00 Location: Zoom internet delivery Tutor: John Beaney Includes school holidays. 1st Thursday of the month. Every now and then, a director blends the talents of writers, scenic designers, photographers, actors and composers with the highly technical process of film making and creates a true work of art. The film, usually controversial, receives accolades and, sometimes, notoriety. Each month we will watch such a film in our own time and then discuss whether it deserves its reputation and why. There is so much choice and yet it’s hard to find the pearls among the dross. If you have something to recommend, join us to chat about a film or series that is currently streaming either free to air or on a paid platform. We only want to hear about programs of true excellence - in English or foreign language. We will meet in a local cafe for a coffee or glass of wine, while we chat. Wine and Food Appreciation 21FOD01: ZM Fabulous Foodies Type: Long Course Dates: 10/02/2021 - 24/11/2021 Frequency: Monthly, Wed 10:00 - 12:00 Location: Zoom internet delivery Tutor: Anne Bould Includes school holidays. Wednesday weeks 2&4. This is a course for men and women who appreciate interesting and good food. This is a self-help group facilitated by Anne & Myra. The idea is to draw on the group's own experiences and involves sharing information on different foods and cooking techniques, sampling food, and sharing recipes. Some weeks we hope to be visiting other food related venues. The first meeting will be a get-to-know-you session and a planning session. This course will run on the last Friday of each month, February to November. Develop your appreciation of wine and cheese in a social and fun environment. It is not for those seeking a degree in Viticulture or Cheese-making! Participants will sample 3 different whites and 3 different reds, including a variety of cheeses and other nibbles on each occasion.
