Sport, fitness and recreation Increasing your heart rate daily, even for just 20 minutes, has been proven to elevate your mood, gives you more energy, and reduces stress. Our Rotorua and Tauranga campuses have modern fitness centres with discounted student membership rates. As a member of the Community Recreation Centre at Mokoia Campus, you can have your fitness level assessed; use the weights room; enjoy fitness classes like balance, circuit and spin; or join indoor sports like basketball, dodgeball, netball, soccer, volleyball, badminton and cricket. Te Pare a Ruahine Aquatic and Fitness Centre at Windermere Campus includes a 25-metre training pool, gym and group fitness areas. Memberships include regular fitness assessments and programme updates. Hair, beauty and barbering salons You can enjoy a range of convenient and cost-effective services at our student salons. These include hairdressing services such as cuts, colouring, straightening and styling, and beauty services such as facials, waxing, lash and eyebrow tinting and shaping. All treatments are supervised by qualified tutors. Biculturalism Toi Ohomai is strongly focused on biculturalism, recognising and celebrating our country’s Māori and non-Māori heritage and culture. Many names, practices, teachings and even some of our buildings reflect our Māori history. You will learn about, and also participate in, various Māori cultural practices during your studies here. Tangatarua - the name of the marae (meeting grounds) at Mokoia Campus - translates to “two peoples”. Pomare is the wharenui (meeting house) at Windermere Campus. It is named after a Māori ancestor from the local area. Pōhiri All new students are formally welcomed to Toi Ohomai with a pōhiri (traditional Māori ceremony) at the marae or wharenui on campus.
