INTRODUCTION The International Distance Skateboard Association (IDSA) is an international sports federation founded by longboard enthusiast and producer of many DISTANCE SKATEBOARD MARATHONS, Jonathan Strauss, to fill the need for a world governing body to develop, manage and promote distance skateboarding by introducing standard rules and regulations on disciplines, safety, equipment manufacturing, events and world rankings. The IDSA’s mission is to create a global governing body to ensure the safety of event competitors by ensuring that route inspection, age grouping and event insurance needs are met; to grow international awareness and participation by demonstrating skateboarding's benefits toward a healthy and positive lifestyle; and to ultimately infuse new energy into skateboarding as a viable and legal mode of transportation. IDSA membership can be as a Country Member / National Governing Body (NGB), becoming an affiliate association of the IDSA or as an international member with access to all associations and events worldwide. Becoming a member of your NGB also gives you access as an international member. INTERNATIONAL DISTANCE SKATEBOARD ASSOCIATION
WELCOME TO IDSA I would like to personally welcome all distance skateboarding enthusiasts, professionals, event producers, media producers, equipment manufacturers, website operators and clothing manufacturers to The International Distance Skateboard Association (IDSA). The IDSA is unique as a sports federation since our discipline and the many sub-disciplines, is as much a lifestyle as it is a sport and it is my personal goal and desire to develop this association into a global governing body that is respected and recognized. I look forward to working with our country chapters, international members and media partners. Join Now to Get Stoked! DEFINITION Distance Skateboarding is a lifestyle sport where a person uses a skateboard primarily for travelling long distances and/or transport. The skateboards are usually longer and lower than standard skateboards with softer, larger wheels, which makes the skateboards used for distance skateboarding more stable and adhesive, in addition to being more capable of traveling longer distances without requiring any movement from the rider. Though longboards are the most efficient, any type of skateboard can be used for distance skateboarding. INTERNATIONAL DISTANCE SKATEBOARD ASSOCIATION
A BRIEF HISTORY OF DISTANCE SKATEBOARDING The history of distance skateboarding began in 1959 with Longboarding/Skateboarding, which originated in Oahu, Hawaii, when surfers began using longboarding/skateboarding to train, when there weren’t any waves. In the beginning it was called Sidewalk Surfing and the first boards were made from skies or wood planks with metal wheels taken from roller skates. After a while people realized that clay wheels were more safe, but the young sport was still too unsafe and its popularity declined until the arrival of urethane wheels in the early 1970s, which were safer, smoother and with more grip. However with the increase usability came an increase daringness and recklessness that drove up the price of insurance for events and skateparks. As result the sport suffered another decline in popularity until the early 1990s. Fueled by the international popularity of skateboard celebrities like Tony Hawk, a growing group of aging skateboarders and a public that was a lot more willing to try new outdoor sports, combined with snowboarders turning to longboarding in the summer for similar experiences, distance skateboarding started carving out its own niche. By the turn of the century distance skateboarding was officially no longer a fad, but a serious sport with immense international growth and serious consideration as a viable source of transportation. DISCIPLINES MARATHON The marathon is the most popular mainstream distance today amongst participant sporting events. Distance skateboarding events, for obvious reasons, were founded based on the concept and uniqueness of a 26.2 mile race for time. Today, it is the most important means by which distance skateboarders are globally ranked by the IDSA. The IDSA, in an effort to grow racing and to be considered as a future Olympic Sport, has implemented other race distances to attract a more mainstream participant base with the belief that Longboarding/Skateboarding is the most accessible sport in the world, not only because of the ease of learning, but the affordable nature and the physical development (aerobic and coordination) it provides to its participants. For an event to be sanctioned as an official IDSA event the route must meet our international safety standards and insurance requirements as provided in the welcome kit upon requesting a sanction. DISCIPLINES Long Distance Pumping (LDP) / Skogging – LDP is a technique used to gain speed without the riders' feet leaving the board on flatland for long distances . LDP discipline has a separate global ranking. Skogging is a combination of Skating and Jogging developed by former World Slalom Skateboard Champion Chris Yandall, it is also considered the use of both legs alternately in order to move the skateboard forward. It allows for the body to fatigue less quickly Official Age Groups: Child Group: Under 10 Masters Group: 35-50 Youth Group: Under 14 Veteran Group: Over 50 Junior Group: Under 19 Open Group: All ages Since LDP and Skogging are endurance sports, competitions may be distance and/or time based.
