Pg 7 7 Health Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore Our Clients Say it Best! Pg 8 Chest pain is recognizable, but other symptoms can be Referral program Pg 8 subtle When it comes to heart health, the American Heart Association has warned that chest pain or discomfort in one or both arms can be a warning sign of a heart issue and to see a doctor right away. Crushing pain in the chest is another warning sign of ticker trouble, but some indications of health issues are not as obvious and can often be mistaken or ignored. Here are seven warning signs that may be cause for concern. 1. Tearing sensation If you feel a tearing sensation in your back, you may think you’ve pulled a muscle. But if you haven’t done any physical activity to cause a muscle injury, this sensation might be much more serious. It could be a rupture of the aorta. An aorta rupture can give the sensation of sudden, severe, stabbing pain in the back. If this type of pain persists for more than 20 minutes and it’s accompanied by nausea, seek immediate medical attention. 2. Crushing chest pain One of the more well-known warning signs is crushing chest pain, which is usually associated with a heart attack. Other heart-woe indicators are tightness, heavy pressure or squeezing in the chest. The pain may also travel to the arm, shoulder, jaw or back.
Mike’s Notes Well.... It’s summer time and time for vacations. Your vacation can be a carefree, fun-filled time if you prepare carefully before you go. Of course you have to pack suitcases, secure time off from work, make sure the swimsuit still fits, etc. but you also need to make sure you are staying safe before you leave, at the airport, and on vacation. I recently read an article about vacation preparation that prompted me to write this. While most of the information may seem like common sense, I think we can all appreciate reminders. Before You Leave Travel safety begins before you even leave the house. Securing your home for vacation is one of the most important steps you can take. You want to make sure your home looks lived in, even while you are away, to deter potential burglars. Crime rates rise by about 10 percent in June, July, and August, which also happen to be the peak summer vacation months. Thieves know this, so it’s vital you take steps to help protect your home while you are away. Before you leave on vacation: • Tell a neighbor your travel plans and ask them to help keep an eye on your property and alert the police to any suspicious activity. • Lock all your windows and doors. Don’t forget about doors leading to the garage or second- story windows. • Have mail and newspaper delivery stopped. A sign that nobody is home is a stack of mail & newspapers, as well as garbage cans left at the curb. Contacting your newspaper carrier and the U.S. Post Office to temporarily stop delivery and have a neighbor bring in the garbage cans. • Make sure any yard tools are put away. A ladder, rakes, and even patio furniture, can all be used as tools to gain entry to your home. • Make sure you have all your appliances turned off but leave a small light on so that it appears someone his home at night. • Don’t leave spare keys hidden outside and leave parked cars in driveway. At the Airport Once you arrive at the airport, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind. Always keep a close eye on your luggage, even after you board the plane. • If you’re traveling alone, try to find someone in line to befriend. This is someone who could watch your luggage while at the counter or going through security. • When going through security, put your laptop on the x-ray belt last. This way, your laptop will come out after your carryon luggage and hopefully about the time you are cleared. You don’t want your laptop in the open for too long. • On the airplane, if you don’t put your luggage under the seat in front of you, put it in the overhead bin across the aisle from you. You’ll be able keep an eye on your bag during flight to ensure nobody is opening your luggage. • Always check your belongings to make sure you have all your belongings before exiting the aircraft While on Vacation You’ve successful navigated the airport and now you’ve landed safety at your destination. Don’t relax on safety just yet. Whether at a theme park or at a fancy resort, there are a few safety precautions you can take to make sure you are as safe as possible. • Stay off social media. Don’t tip criminals off by sharing too much information on your social networks. Refrain from posting photos, status updates, or “checking in” while on vacation. Even if you have the highest security settings on Facebook and Twitter, your personal information could still be seen by unwanted eyes. • Tell friends and family at home your itinerary. It’s a good idea to let family and friends know your plans. Always let someone know when you’re expected to be back and what route you’re planning to take. 2
• Keep cash and credit cards separate places. Never carry your credit cards, cash, and passport at the same time. You’ll want to keep some cash in your wallet, and then stash the rest in a pocket or money pouch. If you have a safe in your hotel room, leave the majority of your cash there and only bring what you’ll need for the day. • Make a copy of your passport. You’ll want to make two copies of your passport. Leave one copy at home with a trusted friend or family member and take another copy with you. When you go out sightseeing, take the copy with you and leave the original in a hotel safe until you are ready to travel again. • Do a security sweep of your hotel room. Always keep your hotel door locked and never answer it for someone you don’t know. If you can, try to get a room near the front desk or the elevator. You can never be too careful, especially when it comes to traveling. Make sure things are safe at home and while you are traveling by taking the necessary precautions. I hope you find value in this information. My objective is to always provide value to clients. We appreciate your relationship with our agency and will always be here if you need us. Have a safe and Happy Vacation this Summer! Continued from page 1 Even if it’s not from a heart attack, you should not ignore chest pain. Crushing chest pain with nausea, vomiting and sweating is dangerous, so call 911 right away. 3. Tingling in the arms or other extremities A tingling sensation in your hands, arms, legs or feet is not only uncomfortable but also a cause for concern. Tingling is easy to ignore, but it is a sign from the body of illness. Tingling is related to circulation problems and diseases such as anemia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and Buerger’s disease — a condition of the arteries and veins. Tingling in the feet may also be a sign of kidney issues. If tingling is your only symptom, you can wait to see your regular doctor to investigate. But a tingling sensation that lasts for more than an hour and is accompanied by other symptoms like dizziness and nausea requires immediate medical help. 4. Dizziness Dizziness or lightheadedness can be caused by disturbances in the brain, the gastrointestinal system, vision or the inner ear. Dizziness is one of the most common symptoms that cause people to seek medical attention. If you feel dizzy for more than an hour and develop other symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting, seek medical attention. Dizziness is also related to several other health issues, including high blood pressure, low blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, anemia, dehydration and heart conditions. 5. Sweating Excessive sweating may be caused by a variety of factors, including hot flashes, exercise, stress, excess weight or even spicy food. Heavy sweating may also be a sign of thyroid problems, diabetes or heart issues. If you are sweating more than usual, you don’t need to call 911, but you should consult a physician to rule out a serious underlying medical condition. 6. Numbness Numbness in the face, arms or legs can be a very serious signal, especially if the feeling is on one side of the body, as this could indicate a stroke. This symptom may be accompanied by sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding, as well as blurred vision. Numbness is also associated with several other illnesses, including Lyme disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome and diabetes, and a herniated disk. No matter what the cause, numbness should always be investigated, and if it is accompanied by other symptoms of a stroke, call an ambulance immediately. 3
Continued from page 3 7. Swelling Swelling is usually due to inflammation or a buildup of fluid and may result from a range of conditions. The most common reason for swollen feet or ankles is poor circulation. In older people, it could mean their blood vessels are weakening. It could also be an indication of a blood clot blocking the veins. One of the more serious conditions associated with swelling is edema, which happens when an abnormal amount of fluid builds up in the body. Edema can damage the heart, make you feel weak when walking and cause swollen ankles. Always investigate the cause of any type of swelling. And if you experience swollen ankles, make an appointment with your doctor right away. Immediate Medical Care When serious health symptoms occur, an ambulance is the quickest way to receive immediate attention. Emergency medical technicians can provide immediate care at the scene and in the ambulance. If you drive yourself or someone else to the hospital, there will be an emergency room wait and precious time may be lost. Please contact ABM at 800-362-2809 if you need any help in coverage. Dog-Gone Dogs Dog bites and other dog-related injuries accounted for more than one third of all homeowners liability claim dollars paid out in 2017, costing almost $700 million. That’s according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.), & the largest writer of homeowners insurance in the United States. An analysis of homeowners insurance data by the I.I.I. found that the number of dog bite claims nationwide increased to 18,522 in 2017 compared to 18,122 in 2016, which was a 2.2 percent increase. The average cost per claim increased by 11.5 percent. The average cost paid out for dog bite claims was $37,051 in 2017 compared with $33,230 in 2016. “The increase in the 2017 average cost per claim could be attributed to an increase in severity of injuries,” said Kristin Palmer, chief communications officer with the I.I.I. “But the average cost per claim nationally has risen more than 90 percent from 2003 to 2017 due to increased medical costs as well as the size of settlements, judgments and jury awards given to plaintiffs.” California continued to have the largest number of claims in the United States at 2,228 in 2017, an increase from 1,934 in 2016. The state with the second highest number of claims was Florida at 1,345. Florida had the highest average cost per claim at $44,700. The trend in higher costs per claim is attributable not only to dog bites but also to dogs knocking down children, cyclists, the elderly, etc., which can result in injuries that impact the potential severity of the losses. Make flood insurance part of your Hurricane season preparation Hurricane season began June 1, with the experience of Hurricane Harvey still fresh on Texans’ minds. The Texas Department of Insurance is urging homeowners to review your insurance policies and consider flood insurance if you don’t already have it. No matter where you live. “There were more than 2.5 million residential policies in force in counties affected by Harvey, but only about half a million flood policies,” said Insurance Commissioner Kent Sullivan. “I encourage Texans to remember that if it can rain, it can flood. At a minimum, talk to your agent about flood insurance, even if your mortgage doesn’t require it.” Flash floods are the most common natural disaster in Texas. Most home and commercial policies do not cover flood damage. You’ll need a separate flood policy, usually from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). These flood insurance policies typically have a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect. Make sure your insurance is ready for storm season: • Review your existing home coverage. Make sure the policy limits would be enough to replace your home and property in the event of a disaster. • Talk to your insurance agent about flood insurance. • If you live along the Texas coast, review your windstorm coverage. • Make a home inventory. Having a detailed list of your property will help speed the process of making an insurance claim after a covered loss. • Review your auto insurance. If you have comprehensive coverage it could pay for damage caused by hail or flooding. Misty Alanis Approximately 25 million Americans have cataracts which causes cloudy, blurry or dim vision and often develops with advancing age. Age isn’t the only risk factor. Though most will develop cataracts with age, recent studies show that lifestyle and behavior can influence when and how severely you develop cataracts. Cataracts cannot be prevented, but you can lower the risk. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and brimmed hats when outside can help. Several studies suggest that eating more Vitamin C-rich foods may delay how fast cataracts form. Surgery may help improve more than just your vision. During the procedure, the natural clouded lens is replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens, which should improve your vision significantly. Studies have shown that cataract surgery can improve quality of life and reduce the risk of falling. For vision insurance questions contact one of our representatives at 281-448-3040. 7 7
