ESTATE GIFTS MAKE DREAMS A REALITY FOR STUDENTS Sam Larberg BS ‘22 Biomedical Sciences, women’s soccer, Lake Tapps, WA I chose NAU because it was the perfect distance from home; it also reminded me of where I grew up with mountains, trees, and a small community. This time of year, I love going hiking in Sedona and skiing at Arizona Snowbowl. When I first visited NAU, I fell in love with the campus; it felt like the perfect size. I was able to watch part of a soccer practice and meet the coaching staff. I enjoyed my conversation, the program’s vision, and I admired NAU Athletics’ leadership. During the recruiting process, I felt valued and knew the coaching staff would push me to become better and support my athletic pursuits. I was confident the NAU soccer program was going to be the perfect fit for me. The Sam Stevan Borozan Soccer Scholarship allows me to pursue my dream of playing college soccer and earning a degree in a field I am passionate about. I wanted to attend college out of state; however, distance from home equates to added expenses. Skyjacks supporters allow me to pursue my dream of higher education and create lifelong memories. With the help of this scholarship, I will graduate debt-free — something I will always be grateful for. After graduation, I plan to further my education by attending graduate school to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration. My athletics scholarship creates opportunities for me today but will also open doors into the future. Ways you can get involved: Give Make a gift. Big or small, all gifts matter. CAMPUS COLLABORATIONS NAU ATHLETICS JOINS WITH THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES NAU Athletics will be partnering with NAU’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) to create a living and learning research laboratory within the Student-Athlete High Performance Center. The Sims-Treharne Collaborative Research Lab will feature studies on effective training and recovery at altitude, the relationship between practice and competition workload, effects of sleep and stress, sports nutrition, and the relationship between equipment and injuries. The research and data gathered within this world-class lab will establish NAU as a leader in injury reduction. “We are grateful for our wonderful relationship with the CHHS and the unique opportunity to integrate research into the daily activities of our student-athlete experience,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Marlow. A very special thank you to 1899 Society members Mike Sims and Dr. Patricia Treharne for their generosity in supporting this one-of-a-kind facility and laboratory. have collectively completed more than 800 team practices and 468 strength and conditioning sessions, all while maintaining attention to their student-athletes’ health, safety, and academic excellence. Their extraordinary efforts in the current environment should make anyone with competitive spirit proud.” After the disappointing announcement of canceled fall sports, NAU Athletics is gaining momentum with the commencement of men’s and women’s basketball, football, volleyball, and soccer. MAKING YOUR WISHES KNOWN THROUGH A WILL Do you need a will? Many people feel their estate is too small, but everyone needs a plan. Even if you do not own much property, a will is needed to make many important decisions: • naming an executor • naming a legal guardian for minors • making gifts or transfers • reducing estate tax liability In the absence of a will, the state will resort to a formula to determine how your assets NAU is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Institution/UM560666_02.21 will be distributed. A judge will name an executor, a bond may have to be posted, and the court will name a guardian for your minor children. To make the estate planning process easy and affordable, you are invited to utilize the NAU Foundation’s new Personal and Charitable Financial Planning Guide. Completing the guide will help you gather your assets and prepare for a meeting with an estate attorney.
