Adullam Camp Ministries LEADER IN TRAINING (LIT) PROGRAM 2019 INFORMATION PACKAGE www.adullam.ca Updated Jan 10, 2019
Adullam Camp Ministries OVERVIEW of LIT Program 2019 www.adullam.ca Adullam Camp Ministries Adullam Camp Ministry’s Leadership Program is one of a kind in North America! It uses a multi-year apprenticeship model to train young people for Christ- centered leadership in their churches, youth groups, schools, and communities. During the summer, LIT participants build their leadership skills in a Christian summer camp environment. A key element of the program model is the LIT participants’ commitment to return to their communities to fill a leadership role during the school year. After completing their summer LIT program and serving in their communities during the school year, many LIT graduates choose to continue their leadership development and apply to become members of the summer camp staff on either ACM (Adullam Camp Ministries) or HAM (Hope Alvinston Ministries). For over 35 years, Alumni and Friends have been serving as volunteer adult leaders, supporting the growth and development of the campers, hired staff and LITs. Consider joining the Adullam leadership training adventure. It’s a great opportunity for growth and it’s a whole lot of fun! LIT Program Prerequisites * Have finished at least Grade 9 as of June 2019 * A commitment to giving your best. We’ve talked with lots of LIT ‘graduates’ over 35 years, and the feedback is unanimous: Participate fully in this program, and you will see what it’s like to be a part of an amazing team. At the end of the summer you’ll look back and be amazed by where you started and where you ended up. * We encourage you to participate in all 4 weeks, but a 3 week option is most definitely available to those who need it. Contact Janet Gargano for more information 416-571-8978 janetgargano@rogers.com * Submission of all documents and payment before MAY 31, 2019 An amazing summer awaits! LIT 2019 PROGRAM - EVENT DESCRIPTIONS All of the LIT events are lead by experienced Adullam Summer Staff and supported on site by adult volunteers: 1 LIT LAUNCH and TRAINING EVENT The first mandatory event is “LIT Launch” where LITs meet and get to know one another through a variety of team building activities. LITs also spend time working on their ORCKA canoe skill levels, credentials that are valued province wide and are integral to their success at the Intermediate Algonquin Camp. The “LIT Launch” flows seamlessly into “Training Week”; where LITs are joined by the summer staff from Alvinston Team and the Chatham Kent Adullam Team. LITs participate in sessions on leadership, camp craft and faith topics and participate in team building activities in the camp setting. Parents are encouraged to attend the “LIT Commissioning and Staff Commissioning” which takes place at ‘pick up time’ on Friday afternoon at the end of camp. Families will enjoy a light BBQ supper before they head home. 2 ADVENTURE CAMP The second week of the LIT program: An Adventure Camp where LITs explore the amazing features of our provincial parks, advance their outdoor living skills, and take on challenges that help them to grow as individuals and as members of a team. 3. APPLAUDING THE ARTS CAMP LITs return to Erie Beach and participate in this camp, developing their creativity through the activities they choose in music, visual arts drama and dance. LITs produce a unique drama which they present later in the summer. 4. CHORAL MUSIC CAMP The final week of the summer LIT experience is “Choral Camp”, where LITs are led by very accomplished music directors who have a passion for teaching our youth to become confident singers. The Choral Camp Concert Saturday night ends at approximately 9pm in Chatham. We are proud of our LITs’ accomplishments in completing the LIT program. The families of both the LITs and LITs are encouraged to attend the concert; to enjoy the results of a full week of hard work, and see the LITs publicly recognized for completing the 2019 LIT programs. AND THE FUN CONTINUES into the fall… 5. LITs Re-Unite! The 2019 LITs will have formed a unique and special bond by the end of their summer together. This reunion is a time for FUN! LITs get to take advantage of this opportunity to retreat and regroup, reconnect and revitalize. This is not a mandatory event, but most certainly an event that the LITs don’t want to miss if at all possible! An amazing summer awaits! We’re glad you are considering joining us! It’s going to be a great summer! 4

We would like to know what you are bringing to the LIT program so that we can help you further develop your leadership skills. Please help us to get to know you by answering each of the following questions. 1. Have you had any experience being a camper? Tell us about it. WATERFRONT Camping, by nature, tends to involve water. We ask questions about LITs’ swimming level because we want to encourage them to pursue their lifeguarding qualifications. These qualifications open up many opportunities for those who pursue them. 2. Tell us about your swimming experience and qualifications ORCKA Adullam Camp Ministries is proud to be a member of the ORCKA, the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association. Our qualified instructors provide our LITs with ORCKA instruction to help prepare them to participate in their Adventure Camp. Completion of the various levels is dependent on the individual LIT’s commitment, focus, and opportunities for practice. Keen LITs realize that acquisition of ORCKA levels open up more opportunities for them in their future endeavours. 3. Tell us about your experience in a canoe (or other water craft, if applicable) MUSIC, DRAMA and THE ARTS The camping experience offers LITs the opportunity to advance their ability in the arts. Whether it is leading a song, acting in a skit, teaching a craft, or creating a themed activity, camp staff are required to be a creative bunch. Any additional experience that an LIT can gain in these areas, An amazing summer awaits! We’re glad you are considering joining us! It’s going to be a great summer! 6
both in the LIT program and beyond, enrich one’s life. We encourage our LITs to pursue opportunities in these areas, and thus, ask for the LIT to describe their achievements in the arts. 4. What experience have you had playing a musical instrument? Acting in a play? Painting, drawing, or other arts including culinary arts? Tell us about it! FIRST AID Adullam strongly encourages all LIT registrants to obtain their first aid (either Emergency or Standard) prior to the beginning of the LIT program. Not only are First Aid qualifications a prerequisite for many jobs, they are valuable skills and knowledge to have throughout life. 5. What first aid training have you taken? When did you take your training? LEADERSHIP IN COMMUNITY We recognize that our LITs have a variety of interests, backgrounds, and abilities. Some volunteer in their local community centres and schools, while others are members of school clubs, musical groups, and sports teams. We encourage our LITs to be mindful of the ways in which they are leading those around them, and to begin to articulate the ways they are contributing in the various areas where they are spending their time. We also want our LITs to begin to think about how they can apply those experiences to the summer camp setting. By giving us a bit of background on their experiences, we aim to help the LIT make some of these connections. 6. Some of the ways you’ve shown leadership this year are: An amazing summer awaits! We’re glad you are considering joining us! It’s going to be a great summer! 7
7. My learning goals for the summer include: CHURCH INVOLVEMENT and CHRISTIANITY The Adullam LIT Program aims to enhance our LITs development spiritually, emotionally and physically. LITs will participate in chapels, devotionals, prayer partners, vespers, and will be a part of a wonderful Christian fellowship. We want LITs to see that we value their involvement in their local communities, and encourage them to seek out a local Christian church in which they can serve. 8. My present involvement in a church community is: LEADING BY EXAMPLE Participation is the key! There will be activities and events that may be new to the LIT. A tip for all LIT registrants: Look for ways you can participate, help out, and contribute. Lead by supporting what the instructors are teaching, and look for ways you can help out and encourage those around you. 9. What special qualities do you recognize in yourself that you feel would contribute to the effectiveness of the Summer Camping Program? An amazing summer awaits! We’re glad you are considering joining us! It’s going to be a great summer! 8
10. How do you feel your your current and past experience with Christ and His church might make a difference in your role as an LIT in the Summer Camping Program? 11. What I’m looking forward to this summer is: The following questions are being asked not because we don’t trust you, but because the position of LIT involves working with your LIT peers, staff and possibly children, and is therefore considered a heightened risk. Adullam is managing that risk appropriately. 12. Are there any circumstances involving your lifestyle or history that could call into question your ability to work safety with children or youth? (ie use of illegal substances etc) [ ] yes [ ] no 13. Have you ever been expelled from school or had your employment terminated for assault or violence against any person, or for assault, violence or impropriety with children, youth or vulnerable persons (ie senior citizens or persons with disabilities)?
