Welcome from Mr Schenck Welcome to Parel Vallei! It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Parel Vallei. You are now entering the Place of the Bulldog and Winston (our live mascot) and I are delighted that you have chosen to join at this beautiful school. There is a place for everyone at PV and we encourage you to get fully involved as soon as possible. Here we respect each other and stand together as one family! Winston se van is TUNGU. Message from your Head Prefects To all our new Parel Vallei learners. We are so excited to have you join the Parel Vallei family! In the coming years you will experience many new and exciting things and forge new friendships. We encourage you to seize every opportunity that arises. We are very proud of our school uniform. We expect you to wear school and sportswear with pride after studying the information in this booklet. It is important to us that you orientate yourself as soon as possible regarding the campus and daily operation of Parel Vallei. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Get to know your school prefects and class representatives . If in doubt, go to the LA office - the secretary will help you. The grade heads offices can also be found at the LA office. Calendar Term 1 25 January - 31 March (Grade 8) 27 January - 31 March Term 2 13 April - 25 June Term 3 13 July - 23 September Term 4 5 October - 8 December A school calendar can be found on the D6 Communicator as well as on the following link: https://pvallei.co.za/calendar/15 Timetable At Parel Vallei we follow a 10-day cycle timetable. Day 1 to 5 starts on the Monday of the first week and Day 6 to 10 follows at the start of the following week. New learners will receive their timetable in the first week of school. School times from Monday to Thursday will be 07:35 to 14:20 while on a Friday learners will start at 07:35 and finish at 13:30. Formal test periods are on a Tuesday and Thursday, while class tests will be written during class time on any given day. Dress Code and Appearance Pride in the school is of paramount importance. School uniform is worn with pride. All after-school activities / practices / rehearsals must be attended in school uniform / PV sportswear. 1. School uniforms must be clean and neat. Sponsored clothing may not be worn to school. 2. Pupils must wear the correct shoes BOYS: polished, black, lace-up without large labels or buckles. GIRLS: black, T-bar or lace-up school shoes or black school shoes with one strap over the foot. 3. Blazers must be worn during formal assemblies and on formal occasions as well as in winter. 4. Sleeveless jerseys may be worn during winter and summer; school shirts must be tucked in. Long sleeve jerseys may be worn, but not as an outer garment outside the school grounds. (Matrics have the privilege of wearing the white Matric jersey as an outer garment only during the summer.) 5. During the summer terms, the boys must wear a short-sleeved shirt with the school badge. Girls must wear the short-sleeved shirt with the school badge and the regulation skirt or regulation pants. 6. Boys must wear black or grey belts with long pants to keep their shirts tucked in. 7. Only the regulation type of shorts may be worn. 8. Learners must wear suitable underwear that is not visible. 9. Socks – Only the regulation type of school socks and tights are permitted. Boys: Long, grey school-socks to be worn with shorts. Grey socks with long pants Girls: Summer: short, white school socks (with blue stripe). Winter: regulation black tights. 10. Winter uniform must be worn in the second and third terms. The thick, navy jacket may be worn to school, BUT only the school blazer is always the outer garment. 11. The only jewellery that may be worn is a wrist watch or a medical alert bracelet. Girls may wear ONE small, plain, gold or silver stud or sleeper in each ear lobe. 12. Nails should be clean and should not extend beyond the fingertips. Only colourless nail polish is allowed. Nails must look natural and be well groomed. No artificial nails. Make-up is not permitted. 13. BOYS: Hair must be short and well-groomed. Sideburns should not reach lower than mid-ear. Boys must be shaven at all times. GIRLS: If hair extends lower than the shirt collar it should be kept together with towel covered elastic bands (“fuzzies”) or ribbons. It must be neat and well-groomed. White, black and navy hair elastics and clips are allowed. Gel may be used in moderation. 14. Length of skirts must be decent. 15. Regulation navy-blue gloves and scarves are permitted in winter. 16. Sports wear, as specified, is compulsory for sports events and practices. “Excellence in a changing world ” 9

Sports Information Welcome to Parel Vallei High School. We are very excited to have you join our sports program. At Parel Vallei, we have built up excellent facilities for the various sports we offer. Learners are encouraged to participate in at least ONE Summer and ONE Winter extra mural activity which enables our learners to develop physically, as well as socially, as they interact with their team members and opponents. It is compulsory for Grade 8 and 9 learners to take part in ONE Summer and ONE team Winter extra mural activity. We also believe that, through sport, you are able to identify your strengths and use these to the benefit of the team in which you play. The working world needs young people who are able to slot into teams and work towards a common goal. We believe that sport encourages this. We strive to encompass all facets of the school to have holistic sportsmen and sportswomen. We endeavour to always give the best opportunities through tournaments, camps, tours and through competition. Culture Information Welcome to Parel Vallei High School. We are very excited to have you join our Culture program. At Parel Vallei, we offer learners the opportunity to develop talents and skills. Learners are encouraged to participate in at least ONE Cultural Activity which enables them to make friends, discover talents, refine abilities and gain valuable experience. Please join us as we make many more wonderful memories in the Culture Department. Oom Polla Dear New Parents PURCHASE OF TEXTBOOKS AND STATIONERY FOR 2021 Oom Polla supplies the pupils of this school in respect of textbooks and stationery as prescribed by the school. We would like to walk the 5-year road with you. Below is a short summary of how to derive the best advantage from our system. It is more fully discussed at https://oompolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us From the 1st of November all necessary information will be on our website: www.oompolla.co.za Pre-paid orders are placed electronically on our website. We urge you to place your order as early as possible in November in order to derive the best advantage from our system. Should some titles go into reprint at the publisher/s, the learner’s name will be high up on the waiting list. Early orders also make it possible for us to see where we will have insufficient stock, and we can then order more stock in time from the publishers. We will contact you during the school holiday as soon as your order is ready for collection. You can collect it at a time which is convenient to you. There is an option on the order form to have your order delivered via a courier. Due to Covid-19 we recommend this option. We are no longer on the school grounds of Paul Roos Gymnasium. Clothing Shop Dear New Parents Due to social distancing, the Parel Vallei clothing shop can only be visited by appointment. Appointments can be made by following the link: https://schoolshop.setmore.com/ Appointments are only 30 minutes long. We urge parents to be on time at the shop door to avoid delays. If you are late for your appointment, you have less time to spend in the shop. You have to vacate the shop before the start of the next appointment. It is a lengthy process to get all the new Gr.8`s through the shop, and therefore we would like to encourage everyone to make their appointments early. The shop closes on the 10th of December, and will then re-open in January only for exchanges and collection of orders.
