‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ ‘We are Preparing for Life’. Independence Follow us on Twitter @westcravenhigh Friday 19 March 2021 We can be followed @WestCravenHighSchool “To find yourself, think for yourself.” Socrates Key Messages I hope that this E-bulletin finds you and your family well. A busy week began with the news that our long awaited OFSTED inspection would take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. I was delighted to welcome the inspection team into school so they could see at first hand the improvements we have made since our last inspection in November of 2019. I was so proud of the confidence and conviction of the students who were interviewed. They beautifully articulated their commitment to their learning, to school work and to their experience of life at West Craven. I would also like to thank parents for contributing to the Parent View and open response OFSTED questionnaires. The inspectors considered your contributions in their evaluation of the school’s progress. I look forward to sharing the OFSTED findings with you as soon as we receive it. Wednesday evening gave myself and Mr Brook, the Head of Year 7, the pleasure of meeting our prospective new students and their parents. I hope that the evening gave everyone a flavour of the exciting activities planned at West Craven. I cannot wait to welcome the new students into school in June for a face to face induction activity day, and we will hold a parents’ information event and “meet the team” evening. Fingers crossed that we can stick to the Government’s Road Map and hold these events! In the meantime, I will be looking forward to ‘zooming’ around our Year 6 Primary school classrooms sometime soon to answer their questions! On Thursday evening we launched our Year 9 Options event; we have a dedicated webpage, subject information and videos. Students have until the end of term on Friday, 26 March, to use our webpage and chat to teachers in specially organised sessions in school before making their all important decisions about courses and subjects they will study from Year 10 and beyond. If you have any queries at all about a particular course, subject or more generally about our options process this year then please do email us at options2021@westcraven.co.uk Lateral flow testing of students will continue into next week until all consenting students have had 3 test opportunities in school. Testing will move to home testing kits after the Easter holiday and I will be writing to you next week with more details about how this will work. Next week will be our final week of the term. We are giving away 100 Easter Eggs as prizes to award winning students! So, good luck to those students who have excelled in their education – both remote and back in school - and to everyone who has gone above and beyond to support their peers, family and our local community outside of lessons. You may be a winner! Please stay safe and follow all Government guidance. Mrs Tracy Foy Principal
March 21 World Poetry Day 25 Year 10 Virtual Parents’ Evening 3:30-6:60pm 22 Year 6 SEND Induction event 4-5pm 26 School closes for Easter Holiday NEW System for Ordering Lunch from Monday 8 March Dear Parent or Carer, In light of COVID19 and the bubble systems we have operating in school, we are changing the way that our Year 9, 10 and 11 order their lunches to make the process easier for students. They will be able to select their meals and the days they require a school lunch via an online form. Each week on Friday, we will send out a text message with a link for your child to order their school lunch for the following week. This link will also be on their ClassCharts to complete. If your child has a free school meal they just need to complete the form and submit it for the following week. If you pay for your child to have a school meal, we ask that you upload funds to parent pay at the beginning of the week to cover the meal costs for the week. Please can you ask your child to complete next week’s food order by Monday by clicking the link below https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScegHer9FZfppmPwQ7Cpa27X3dSzTgdl1 AAstWdAQgBIcLSag/viewform
Art Year 10 have been getting to grips with some professional editing software, and working in the style of the famous David Hockney! Some more great art from Poppy in Year 10. A great piece from Bailey, in Year 7, celebrating British Science Week. Ava’s illuminated letter from World Book Day
Year 7 Art The Year 7 homework booklets are looking amazing with some really skilful work - some brilliant artists in the making! Thank you to Ava, Grace, Lillie, Elouise, Kaya, Clare, Tyler and Natalie.
Music Some amazing music work from Lily-Mai, in Year 7! Geography Miss Sumner's class have been working hard since their return to school. 9X2 have been writing letters to the National Trust with their ideas and suggestions about how the sand dune ecosystem on the Sefton Coast can be protected. Students have chosen to protect a number of species in this biodiverse area including red squirrels, sand lizards and skylarks and have come up with imaginative ways of doing so. Being able to write, at length, and presenting work so well within the first week of school (after working on line for the last 2 months) has been really impressive. Here are some examples from Callum, Lucy, Ruby and Fennella.

We are a Reading Academy It is wonderful to have all of our buzzing book readers back in the building this week - and our library shelves are being filled with even more new books! To celebrate our beautiful library and our love of reading, we invited author, J. Ivanel Johnson to write to us. J. Ivanel Johnson is the pen name of a Canadian author who once taught in Lancashire with Mrs Woodward. She is a friend and supporter of our school and has lots of life experiences to share through her love of books. Also known as Julie, she has lived in Bronte’s Haworth in West Yorkshire, James Herriot’s Thirsk, and in the Scottish Highlands near to where Robert Louis Stevenson gained his inspiration for Treasure Island. She has also lived in Joe Medicine Crow’s Montana birthplace, and the Ottawa Valley where The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood was born and raised. Julie and her family now live self-sufficiently on their farm in the Appalachian Mountains of New Brunswick, Canada. They have a huge vegetable garden, milk goats, chickens, and a horse to haul logs for heating their home in the snowy seasons. Thank you, Julie for your personal message to our West Craven family: “Reading saved my life. This is not hyperbole. My parents and grandparents read to me even before I was born and many times daily thereafter. This helped me quickly learn to read myself – and WANT to read! I read under the covers, in my treehouse, in the car… This led me to several amazing jobs as an adult. Jobs like being an actress, an author, a travelling journalist and a park ranger! My grandparents didn’t have walls in their house – they had bookshelves. My father built bookshelves for his paperbacks all around his bathtub. I was surrounded by books – and thank goodness! For when I became disabled at the age of 14 and had to spend much time in bed, these books became my best friends. Through these books, I met other disabled, eccentric, adventurous, active, determined people like me and so I had goals. I didn’t feel so alone. I met people of different races from far-off places. All of these became my companions and heroines, page after page. And thus I forced myself to exercise and become stronger. I became a Canadian champion equestrian, diving horses off cliffs into water and dancing on them in the moonlight. I learned to rock-climb, white water raft, cross-country ski... I can’t do these things anymore, but that’s ok. Because I’m surrounded by books and new friends, adventures and hope.” -J. Ivanel Johnson If you would like to write back to Julie, she would love to hear from you! We love books! As part of our new feature ‘We Love Books’ students will be sharing book reviews with us to inspire others. This week we have Ultimate Football Heroes: Kane, reviewed by Alfie in Year 7. Ultimate Football Heroes: Kane By Matt and Tom Oldfield I’d rate this book a 4-star, because it was a great book. It is about the life of Harry Kane and his football career. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to people who like football. My favourite part of the story is when Harry Kane gets released by Arsenal and climbs his way to the Tottenham team. The worst part of the story is when he goes on loan to Leicester and has a bad season. The ending is a bit of an anti-climax as it is more about Tottenham than Kane, however, the majority is decent. Come On You Spurs! By Alfie, Year 7 This book is just one from the Ultimate Football Hero series We are a Reading Academy Author of the Week Our author of the week is Ross Welford! This week you can listen to the audiobook of Ross Welford's Time Travelling with a Hamster! Every weekday at 3pm we'll be adding a new part to the story for you to enjoy. You can also watch an exclusive video with Ross Welford about his new book When we got Lost in Dreamland, discover his favourite children's books and read a Q&A.
