In the vineyard A Message From Your Board Chair 2020 AGM and District Meetings Cancelled LCBO Sales Report Industry Updates Classified Ads Secure your contracts today March 2020 October2018
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING IS CANCELLED MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD CHAIR These are very challenging times and I want to assure our members that your Board of Directors remains focused on the issues affecting our industry and those that may arise due to COVID-19. The health and well-being of our families is a primary concern for all, and out of an abundance of caution, we have closed the GGO office building. All staff are continuing to work from home, and can be reached through the office number 905 688-0990, their cell phone, or email. Resources for COVID-19 can be found at: niagararegion.ca/health/covid-19/resources.aspx Annual General Meeting Given the continuing concerns with the spread and management of COVID-19 and in the best interests of our members the Annual General Meeting scheduled for April 8, and District 5 and District 6 meetings will be rescheduled to a later date. The Grower Committee members and Board of Directors will remain in place until a new date for the Annual General Meeting is established. We recognize the challenges facing growers, and we appreciate your support during these very difficult times. Our newly published 72nd Annual Report for the fiscal year ending January 31, 2020 can be found at: .grapegrowersofontario.com/sites/default/files/GGO_Annual_Report_2019_Final version.pdf Foreign Workers Program The Grape Growers of Ontario, along with all of our commodity partners, are working with the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) to deal with the immediate need to resolve the current suspension of the Foreign Workers Program. At this time, we want you to know that the OFVGA is aware of the urgency of getting this situation resolved. The following actions are underway: • OFVGA Chair Bill George is scheduled to have a call with Minister Hardeman today to ensure he is fully briefed on the implications of not having workers, and to enlist support for working with Premier Ford and the federal government on a solution. It is the OFVGA’s goal to partner with government to help main- tain a secure food supply for Canadians while protecting Canadian citizens and workers. • OFVGA is working closely with their government relations firm, McMillan Vantage, who is working to connect with the appropriate officials to address this issue and strategize an appropriate response. • Messaging to government and media is being developed to clearly state that farmers across the Ontario support the government and its efforts to keep Canadians safe, and recognize the importance of taking all reasonable precautions. We want to help! • The OFVGA is coordinating with other stakeholders, including FARMS, the Canadian Horticultural Council and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. We recognize the news yesterday came as a shock and if not solved has serious implications for individual growers and the entire ag sector as a whole. The Grape Growers of Ontario are working closely with OFVGA, and are preparing letters for both the Federal and Provincial Governments to encourage a swift solution to this issue. We will endeavour to keep you updated as this situation develops. We appreciate your patience and your support in getting this issue resolved as soon as possible.

Bill was first elected as Chair in 2019 and he has been a strong advocate for the fruit and vegetable sector. Bill served on the Grape Growers of Ontario Board of Directors for 20 years, and was Chair from 2007 - 2016. In 2001, Bill served as ambassador for the grape growing community in his role as Grape King. In addition to the OFVGA, Bill is also a Director of the Canadian Horticultural Council. We also extend best wishes to Hugh Fraser, who was awarded this year’s Niagara Peninsula Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association Award of Merit on Thursday, March 5. Hugh has worked with growers for more than 40 years. With a background in dairy, he’s consulted on several, vastly diversified farm matters and always over-delivers on his promises. His book, entitled “Swing Beam Barns of Niagara’, was published in 2019. It tells stories of 50 barns built circa 1819-1884 through imagined scenes and dialogue, family and local history, and hundreds of photos and schematics. With spring at our doorstep, I encourage growers to watch our 2nd webinar series in viticulture, produced in partnership with CCOVI at https://brocku.ca/ccovi/webinar-series-in-viticulture. The latest video features Dr. Jim Willwerth and focuses on the best ways to accurately estimate your crop. Accurate crop estimation is critical for decisions concerning crop management and to ensure proper vine health and adequate fruit quality.

Ontario Craft Wine Trade Show and Conference Due to the uncertainty around the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ontario and around the world, the Ontario Craft Wine Conference Committee has taken the difficult, but necessary decision to post- pone the upcoming April 2nd, 2020 conference as the health and safety of all attendees is the priority. We recognize that the contributions from everyone involved is vital to the success of the conference and truly believe the programming for this conference is our most effective content to date. Therefore, we are looking forward to the opportunity to a rescheduled date later in the calendar year. Information on the new conference date will be forthcoming. Please contact the Ontario Craft Wineries office should you have any questions. 905-568-8070 info@ontariocraftwineries.ca Custom Propagation for Grape Growers/Wineries Now Available! The Canadian Grapevine Certification Network (CGCN-RCCV) has received funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) program to test vines used for propagation for Grapevine Leafroll associated Virus 1 (GLaV1), GLaV3, Red Blotch Virus (GRBV), and Pinot Gris Virus (GPGV). The funding will reduce the cost of testing by ap- proximately fifty percent. Plants that test negative for the four viruses will allow CGCN to verify the scion/rootstock wood used from these plants in plant propagation that have passed the interim grapevine testing standard. Please contact Darien Temprile via email darien@ cgcn-rccv.ca or phone 905-688-0990 ext 222 to sign up. For additional information please visit https://www.cgcn-rccv.ca/

The self assessment questionnaire can be accessed on eGrape.ca under “Communications”. Growers may use the confidential, voluntary survey for their own information, or may choose to proceed to receive a Sustainability Certification through a third-party auditor. Growers who choose to participate in the Certification program will be required to conduct a full audit in year 1, followed by paper audits in year 2 and 3; a full audit will then be required after 3 years.
