Key Requirements for ships – IHM Part I • Non-EU-flagged ships = “IMO-IHM” • Without the additional EU-substances (in red) • Existing ships = min. Table A • New ships & installations = Table A&B • EU-flagged ships = “EU-IHM” • Existing ships = min. IHM Part I for New Ships • Shipyard responsible • IHM is based on information delivered by suppliers • Supplier provides for each product • Suppliers Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) • SDoC is a legally relevant statement • Overtaking full responsibility for information provided in MD • Material Declaration (MD) • Suppliers often depend on information from own suppliers • „asbestos free declaration“ not appropriate • „understanding“ different • Wrong statements = compensation claims possible • Think about own control regime (required by ISM from ship owners) 2019-02-21
IHM Part I for Existing Ships Owner is responsible • IHM preparation by IHM Expert • IHM-certification independent of ships´ class • IHM-Development consists of ~7 steps 2019-02-21
IHM Part I: Demand & Supply • HKC = ~48.000 ships • Has not entered into force yet • EU = ~30.000 ships • Entry into force: 2013 • Deadline existing ships: Dec. 2020 ≈ 69 ships/day* • Limited capacity of IHM-Experts • Half of fleet will be w/o IHM! *: 2 years, 220 working days/a 2019-02-21

Advantages of IHM-App • Reduction of report preparation time to few minutes • Guidance through onboard inspections • Impossible to forget a marking in ship plan, taking a photo etc. • Full traceability by NFC-Tags • Laboratory • Certifier • Owner / crew • Useful for IHM-maintenance • Full overview of what has been sampled and related results 2019-02-21
Conclusions • IHM = technical file; quality important • Avoiding claims by future owners or recyclers • Safeguarding crew during ship operations • Supporting safe and environmentally sound recycling • Avoiding new deliveries to contain banned hazardous materials (asset values) • Maintainability 2019-02-21
Conclusions for owners • IHM-Deadlines are fixed • EU-flagged NB: contract after 2018 = IHM required • FiS: from end of 2020 all EU-flagged and EU-visiting ships >500GT • Huge number of ships addressed • IHM-activities are sharply increasing • Lack of resources foreseeable Existing Fleet New Builds Last Voyage Operation • IHMs • IHM latest by • Include IHM • EU-flagged • Set up or use • required for planning of recycling 2020 in building specification ships: repository for IHM data • Order • Have • No IHM: no safe & sound HazMat • Get class for certified IHM • Set up recycling possible!
