IAPS Conferences and Courses 2018 2019
Foreword
Welcome to our IAPS professional development programme for the academic year 2018-2019.

IAPS offers a successful and reputable programme of professional development courses and
conferences which are available for all staff in our member schools. Our courses are designed
to cover the most important and current issues facing Independent Prep Schools; appealing to
a wide range of staff, including courses for Teaching Assistants, Safeguarding, Coaching and
Engineering in Schools.

We are enormously grateful for the significant contribution made by the IAPS Subject Advisers to
the programme of events and, in addition to a continuing focus on subjects and curriculum issues,
IAPS is offering new courses which include: three one-day workshops with The National Literacy
Trust; two one-day courses with Steven Burnage of Simply INSET, “Developing Outstanding
Learning” and “Raising Standards through Mentoring and Coaching”, and a day with Marilyn
Hawes, CEO of Freedom from Abuse – “Are we able to Prevent Child Abuse?” Further, we are
excited to be welcoming Professor John Hattie to the IAPS circuit, where he will be presenting a
conference at Wellington College based around Visible Learning. We continue to enjoy partnering
with Dragonfly Training, Independent Thinking Ltd, AMCIS and ISC to deliver a diverse and
comprehensive professional development programme.

To complement our training programme, we have introduced IAPS iLearning – a digital, mobile
solution for additional training needs. This is a significant development for IAPS and will further
meet the needs of IAPS staff. For more details and a list of available courses, visit the IAPS
website https://iaps.uk/courses/iaps-ilearning/

Our paperless initiative, providing materials electronically to delegates, has proved successful and
these resources will continue to be available either prior to a course or through the IAPS website.
The IAPS conference app has also been a success at our larger conferences and this initiative
will continue to be used at the Annual Heads’ Conference and the Pre Prep and Early Years
Conference.

In 2017–2018 over 1,500 IAPS members of staff attended our courses and conferences. We
endeavour to provide and deliver the best value and quality at all our events. Feedback is always
welcome and valuable to help us reflect, plan and prepare future courses, and we hope that you
find this year’s programme of events beneficial and relevant.

I look forward to meeting you at some stage during the year and please do not hesitate to contact
the Education, Advice, Sport and Training (EAST) Team should you require any further assistance
in respect of our professional development programme.

The Teaching Assistant can be a highly valued asset in the classroom. The key, though, is to identify
what are and what are not the best value interventions the TA can make. This course will offer
practical, lesson-ready strategies to support delegates in improving the literacy and numeracy skills
of the pupils you support. Whilst this course will focus on work with mainstream pupils, there will be
clear reference to EAL and SEN pupils.

                   Date: Tuesday 6 November 2018

Venue: Wellington College, Duke’s Ride, Crowthorne, Berkshire RG45 7PU
Autumn Term 2018
Join Professor John Hattie and his expert team for a guide to gaining maximum impact through
focusing on what works BEST, not simply what works. Delegates will learn: the main factors that
influence student learning; the processes that maximise the impact of all your decisions; how to use
data to evidence your impact on learning; what collective efficacy is, and why it is integral to effective
professional development, and how to create visible, metacognitive learners in every classroom in
your school. Following the conference, delegates will be able to: make decisions based on what you
know for certain leads to a growth in student achievement; ensure all pupils make at least one year’s
progress for one year’s input, and take clear steps to evaluate the impact of what everyone does in
                   your school.

Music: A Gift for Life; How to Unlock the Treasure Chest of Music
                    894
                              for Future Generations

Audience: Directors of Music, Music Teachers KS1-3
Venue: Maple House, 150 Corporation Street, Birmingham B4 6TB
The good news is that access to music has never been better; thanks to the internet, most of us are
musical billionaires! The bad news is that many people don’t know how to use these treasures. This
course is designed to show you how to teach pupils to use the contents of the treasure chest. It
represents a revolution in what used to be called ‘musical appreciation,’ and a break-through in the
teaching of listening skills to singers and instrumentalists. Based on the work of the conductor and
researcher, Christopher Gayford, the course will give you a new understanding of listening and how to
                   teach it.

2018 is the Year of the Engineer, so there is no better time to explore the introduction of engineering
as a curriculum subject. This course includes consideration of the value of teaching engineering to
Years 3 to 8, the principles that lie behind it, and how to resource engineering in terms of time, space,
materials and expertise. There will be plenty of hands-on sessions for delegates to experience the
engineering approach, and lesson plans and teaching resources will be provided to take away. St
Faith’s is the winner of the 2018 TES Award, ‘Strategic Initiative of the Year’, for the introduction of
                   engineering.

Spring Term 2019
Delegates will analyse and explore whether they have, or can develop, the personal and professional
skills necessary for the position of Head. Presentations and practical workshops will offer insight into
the many challenges and opportunities that are faced in today’s schools, in order to help delegates
gain more clarity on the joys and demands of Headship. This course regularly receives the highest
ratings of all IAPS courses and is usually oversubscribed.

                              Spoon Feed No More!
903 (a joint Dragonfly and IAPS course)

Audience: SMT, Subject Leaders, Teachers KS1-3
Venue: Maple House, 150 Corporation Street, Birmingham B4 6TB
Do you feel that your classroom is often a place where pupils come to watch you work? Do you
feel that too many of your pupils take the easy way out and always demand your help? Do you
want a return to “good, old-fashioned teaching” instead of “tick-lists and buzzwords?” This course
represents the philosophy and practice of Dragonfly Training, which is “hands-on” learning where the
pupil works harder than the teacher. Delegates will receive a cutting-edge synthesis of what works,
and what doesn’t, in real classrooms; they will take away dozens of teaching strategies that really
work, and understand how to plan effectively and build in academic rigour, and create language-rich
                   classrooms.

904 Design Technology: Progressing DT in Prep Schools

This course will build on last year’s successful event by continuing to look at the skills pupils will need
at a senior school and how we can adapt current projects. Delegates will look in detail at the health
and safety side of running a DT department and there will be an opportunity to share a successful
                   lesson/project.

safe” and also those which relate to promoting well-being. The course will include a boarding
perspective for those schools which have full, weekly or flexi boarding, but the content will be relevant
                   to all schools. Topics will include: supporting vulnerable children; medical matters; well-being; bullying;
online safety; handling disclosures and working together with other agencies. Guidance will also be
given on how to deal with allegations of non-recent abuse. There will also be ample opportunity to
network with colleagues fulfilling similar positions in other prep schools.

increasingly competitive marketplace. Whether your responsibility for marketing is on a full or part-
time basis, attendance at this event will equip you with the tools and knowledge to be able to market
your prep school practically and effectively. Early booking is advisable as this annual event is always
                   very popular.

In 2014 the IAPS Council agreed that at the heart of every IAPS school there should be a focus
upon Education for Social Responsibility (ESR); the promotion of well-being, rights, responsibilities,
knowledge, skills and the opportunity for young people to be valuable and constructive members of
society. This area of education is frequently referred to as “Essential Education” as it represents the
areas that are at the heart of fulfilled lives, strong communities and global sustainability. This course is
designed to enable delegates to gain a deeper understanding of why ESR is such an important area,
and how to deliver it without over-burdening already pressured staff.

SEND: How Can I Help You? Identifying Special Educational Needs
                    912
                              in Children

                   Date: Monday 4 March 2019
Course Director: Claire Thurlby, IAPS SEND Subject Adviser

Venue: Broadway House, Tothill Street, Westminster, London SW1H 9NQ
All teachers are teachers of children with special educational needs. Teaching such children is,
Spring Term 2019
therefore, a whole school responsibility. Teachers are the first people that children meet at school,
when they begin their school journey and each subsequent day that they go into class. Teachers
are responsible not just for children’s education but for their daily welfare and teachers, and their
assistants are in the best position to notice the needs - long before the SENCO might become
involved. Attendees to this course will learn about the signs and symptoms that children can display
when they need some extra help. They will be taught about what to look out for, when to look for it,
and how to spot difficulties quickly. The course will also cover the next steps and how to begin the
process of assessment, talking to parents and fundamentally how to start making a difference.

The annual IAPS Pre Prep and Early Years Conference provides a stimulating CPD opportunity for
Pre Prep and Early Years leaders around the country. Pre Prep and Early Years Heads enjoy meeting
and sharing best practice across a concentrated few days and each year our delegates find the
programme to be varied, relevant, challenging and refreshing. You will receive updates about current
pre prep issues; spend time in discussion with colleagues; hear from high quality speakers and take
back to school with you a range of ideas, resource suggestions and fresh perspectives.

This important course is strongly recommended for Heads within their first few years of headship. We
will look at areas such as managing change, yourselves and others, marketing and leading to realise
your vision. There will be an opportunity to network with other new Heads and IAPS officers and
                   officials.

valued and ready for the challenges that they face.

for TES Resources and a former President of the Association of Language Learners. She has a PhD
from Cambridge University, focusing on teacher and learner interaction in the secondary languages
classroom. Rachel will discuss the theory and research underpinning the principles of spontaneous
speech: also known as the five Cs. Delegates will explore how to focus their planning to incorporate
theory into practice: phonics; questions; pictures; routines, and pairs and groups. Delegates will plan a
sequence of three lessons, building in opportunities for progressive talk followed by a presentation of

887 Are we able to Prevent Child Abuse?

                   Date: Thursday 21 March 2019

Audience: Heads, Deputy Heads, Senior Leadership Team, Designated Safeguarding Lead,
                   Matrons, Pastoral Support Staff

whose three sons were sexually groomed and assaulted by their Head teacher, a close family friend.
Marilyn began creating training programmes to educate those with a duty of care over children on
how to recognise abusers’ behaviour and Freedom from Abuse exists to prevent child sexual abuse
through education and training. Marilyn knows from experience that it is possible to learn how to
recognise grooming behaviour so that adults who know how to spot it are better prepared to protect
their children. This programme has been created due to the lack of essential knowledge, focusing on
behaviours of those abused and those who abuse, in order to prevent abuse.

part of a school’s culture rather than an addition to the ICT curriculum. Delegates will have the
opportunity to look at different ways to introduce or extend coding within their classroom, alongside a
chance to think about ways to embed internet safety and involve all concerned parties. This will be a

Audience: Governors, Heads, Senior Leaders, Staff responsible for Inspection Procedures
                   Venue: London
This course is designed to help schools understand the Education Quality Compliance Inspection
process and how they can best prepare themselves, their staff and governors for such an inspection.
Training will provide additional insight for schools and explain how the new arrangements will
differ from the previous ISI integrated inspections. This course will also explore how the separate
reporting of compliance enables inspectors to focus more on vivid reporting of a school’s individual
characteristics and quality. Participants will learn how they can sell their setting and show the
inspectors what they want to see. Delegates will be invited to submit questions in advance to make
full use of the Q&A session at the end of the seminar.

the gender gap, attainment and data, role models and research, and challenging and exploring
stereotypes. There will be time for reflection: identifying issues in your own school, identifying

become Deputy Heads in prep schools. It will cover the various roles and responsibilities assigned
to senior management staff, outlining the real challenges for which deputies need to be prepared.

strategy and education issues as well as network with those who hold similar SMT roles in other IAPS
                   schools from far afield.
