publisher’s message PUBLISHED AND EDITED BY Colin Ainsworth Sharp Forty Six Years On Twenty seven has always been my favourite number. Why? DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR Amanda Graham No logical reason, but if I’m asked to think of a number – it’s 27. Grounded Confidence Engineered multi-ply is a flooring solution for anyone who wants flooring that is less likely to warp or react to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. Multi-ply boards, provided by Oggie, are constructed by bonding together a solid top layer of oak with eight or more base layers of poplar and birch. These are cross-layered then bonded and pressed together to create a solid core. The more layers the board has, the more stable the floor is likely to be. They are also generally recommended should one have underfloor heating. Oggie’s new Dutch finishing line is the most technically advanced colour finishing plant in Africa. Clients can choose from a broad range of displayed colour samples or create their own custom colour finish in UV oil or commercial grade diamond oil. Complete confidence is reflected in their 30-year guarantee. www.oggieflooring.com CUSTOM COMPLEMENT Designed by David Lopez Quincoces in 2018, Seryasse is a wardrobe with aesthetically striking swing doors. A project defined by the solid Canaletto walnut of the doors, enhanced by the micro-slat accents that give the design its name. I was only 18 at the time, finishing off my final matric exams when I designed my first, modern, open- plan kitchen. I really was drawn in by the fact that the kitchen was not only an aesthetic space but also had to essentially provide for the entire home. of a kitchen reimagined. We wanted to look at this differently. My brother Graham was 24 at the time and a computer programmer, but we believed our age was actually our advantage as we didn’t know what couldn’t be done in the industry, so we tried it anyway! Believing in what we were tempted to do, we never shied away from working with new textures and adopting new technologies and design methodologies; we pushed through the challenges of a static industry to forge what would become the blu_line brand. ‘Our main challenge was that the local industry saw itself as just that, local. We believed though, that we could build a product – a creative experience – that could compete internationally and inspire clients at the same time. This ambition pushed us and today we manufacture our entire collection from our own facility where we are in complete control and given maximum opportunity to develop new products and materials, which allow us to push the boundaries. ‘What we are focused on is the experience we provide for our clients. Part of this then is that we have consistent attention to detail. I am extremely passionate about this factor because I believe this is what sets a product apart. We have therefore considered not just the overall look but the ‘touch’ factor of the kitchen, offering every user a tactile experience. Using the latest manufacturing technology, we have a full-time department focusing on new textures and materials. This touch factor is vital as it engages the senses and can also anchor a space driven by cutting-edge technology and clean lines. ‘Inherent here is the focus on developing a dynamic kitchen space, as part of increasing our clients’ experience of this key area. To do this we introduced added technology that would enable the kitchen to develop according to changing needs and desires. An example – and the most drastic R&D – was in developing our own proprietary Sensorline technology that drives our moving stone counters and panels. This development is able to shift the possibilities of this space as various activities can be served in a more practical way.’ How does this designer / manufacturer see the contemporary kitchen shell differing in 2019? trends Wish List Singular Style Synonymous with creativity and colour, Pomellato was founded in Milan in 1967 by Pino Rabolini. The heir to his family’s goldsmith legacy, he was to introduce the prêt-à-porter philosophy to the traditionally conservative world of jewellery. Rabolini went on to revolutionise women’s fashion choices while shaping Pomellato with a powerful, fashion-forward identity. Fifty years later, his jubilant, distinctive designs have grown to be revered both in Italy and across the international jewellery landscape. Pomellato style is very evident. It expresses an avant-garde, original approach; examples include spohisticated coloured stone combinations that feature unusual C gem cuts and visionary designs. Impeccably M crafted, Pomellato pieces have led the brand to embody a modern yet unconventional Y appeal, immediately recognisable through CM the Maison’s signature style. MY To capture the emotion of a jewel, instinct CY becomes an important guide. Inspirations CMY are expressed within the gem’s shapes – like perfect, tiny sculptures – each crafted K by a combination of invention, curiosity and the Maison’s singular style. Free from convention, Pomellato pursues alternative solutions and perspectives in its gemstones, rendering them tangible by the tactile and visual qualities of their authenticity. Craftmanship is key. Every day in Pomellato’s Milan atelier, over 100 artisans craft one-of-a-kind jewels. Each gemstone creation is brought to life by their passion and expertise, forged by hours of meticulous labour and inventive solutions. This process brings together precious metals such as Pomellato’s signature rose gold, fine diamonds, and coloured gems from all over the world. Amongst many expert techniques, Pomellato craftsmen will often employ microfusion. Also known as lost-wax casting, a process dating back to 3500 B.C., which informs the soft lines and voluminous, flowing shapes that the Maison has come to be known
The Place we Live for. This goldsmith art is used to set increasingly rare semi-precious stones – known as the ‘new precious’ gems – to create jubilant, contemporary Pomellato jewellery. In-house goldsmith creation is an essential part of the Milanese brand’s identity and renown. Jewellery-making knowledge and experimentation involve rituals of painstaking care, and attention to materials. Pomellato monitors and evaluates its environmental impact through the Environmental Profit & Loss account, published every year by the Kering Group in order to reduce the impact related to the sourcing of precious raw materials. The goal is to reach 100 percent responsible gold sourcing via the Kering Responsible Gold Framework; a core mission further flanked by the constant research for sustainable silver sources and tracing transparent sourcing for diamonds and coloured gemstones. Waterfall Country Estate is a recent residential development combining several gratifying factors: living with nature, two private schools and numerous restaurants. Here too, is a logistics hub and commercial office park, three hotels and conference facilities, benchmark architecture and sophisticated security. Unique leisure options include a 30-kilometre cycle track, fishing, running, equestrian activities and rowing.
This house was a new design in the Waterfall residential development on a stand size of 1 130 square metres, with 42 percent coverage spanning 677 square metres. Although the ‘silo’ is the defining factor of the house, the top lit windows are unique in their angle. Not being aligned to the walls and instead bending back inwards to accentuate the aesthetic of the roof and soften the natural lighting; a triple volume is created with this unique roof structure. Architect Derick Brits recalls: ‘My clients are experienced builders / renovators and had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve with their next home. They produced a 60-page, A3 presentation file, categorising each area of the house; every aspect from colour, textures, materials and finishes – to possible suppliers – was included.’ Most importantly this design needed to be unusual, that is to say: one-of-a-kind. The owners admired the work of architect Tom Kundig, and after purchasing their property they searched Waterfall Country Estates for an architect who could deliver on their vision. Identifying three homes, all designed by Derick Brits, they discovered that he too was an admirer of Kundig. Says Brits: ‘Our main inspiration on the brief came from architect Tom Kundig’s work and other homes completed locally. these pages: Bar and patio relaxation spaces create a generous outdoor entertainment area that adjoins the interior kitchen and lounge.
‘The Highveld vernacular style responds to the climate. It preempts the materials to be used and the functional detailing of natural ventilation, lighting and heating. The clients wanted a home where indoors and outdoors link, where the living areas open up to access the outside and create one generous space. What resulted is a green home, which has employed the use of as many sustainable materials and elements as possible: rainwater to irrigate the garden, solar panels to heat the pool, heat pumps instead of geysers and double-glazing. ‘Instead of having a traditional consolidated garden, this structure consists of four parallel east-west wings with a north-south circulation corridor that splits up the 1 130-square metre stand into six intimate garden pods. The pod’s careful spacing allows in ample sunlight, yet sits close enough to the next wing to become its linking factor, extending the livable space. The design rationale promotes the use of 100 percent of the stand with only 42 percent of the area being building mass. Overall there is a pleasingly natural feel to the inter- leading spaces, which in turn access the exterior (and vice-versa). Tiggs Crozet adds: ‘My aim was to ensure that the interiors would have a streamlined, modern feel that was in no way clinical. This was realised by using a palette that was a mix of quiet, sophisticated and timeless neutrals. It became my backdrop for an elegant and layered result; accents of colour and texture were added to ground the scheme and add a sense of drama. I drew inspiration from the look and feel of international, contemporary style signatures.’ The architect describes this structure as an ‘inverted’ double storey. ‘It’s quite different from the typical double storey family homes around it in that the bedrooms are all on the ground floor and the living areas sit above these on the first floor. The double volume entrance is carefully positioned between these levels so that visitors entering are naturally drawn to the upper-level living areas. ‘These elevated spaces enjoy views on the western side and spectacular sunsets from the ‘gin and tonic deck’ off the formal dining room. Because of the natural fall of the land and the split-level garden on the opposite side of the house, the living areas here open onto a large covered patio, pool area and garden at ground level. This extends into the estate’s communal green belt, where the children can enjoy further access to more outdoor space.

Hawaan comprises a total of 173 single residential sites of similar size, almost all of which are now completed. This example has been designed in the contemporary style with minimum applied decoration, open-plan living and substantial areas of glass to introduce light and air.
these pages: The covered terrace is a long, horizontal space extending from the TV lounge / kitchen past the formal lounge and along the pool. Weatherproofing includes sliding frameless glass panels and automated blinds. Within the terrace is a seating and al fresco dining area where sections of the roof slab remain open to the garden below. This area is full of light and overlooks the pool and garden as an extension of the living spaces. There is clever use of low maintenance outdoor furniture. Originally an ancient sugar estate, this land was subsequently owned by the Durban Country Club before being sold to Hawaan Investments. It comprises 64 hectares and, where properties are strategically placed, affords corridor views of the ocean and neighbouring dune forest. Says architect Kevin Lloyd: ‘The original brief was to design a home for a professional couple with a young child, plus an integrated small flatlet. The design was completed with Estate approval, after which the clients decided to opt for a single-family home with the same external design; this resulted in more space available within the building envelope.’ The initial challenge was the entrance to the house as the public living zones were requested to be placed on the ground floor to interact with the garden. Thus, access from the narrow panhandle entrance was required to pass the private bedroom zones on the first floor where advantage could be taken of the ocean views. The size of the house and the site’s location and prominence challenged the Estate requirement for low key architecture. Architect Kevin Lloyd recalls: ‘Maximum building envelope height had to follow the original natural ground slope, meaning that a build with a large footprint could have restricted roof height in the far corners of the plan. Hence the plan is a series of long, horizontal forms running across and stepping down the site. Concrete slab roofs ensure a minimum height would not be lost in roof space.
