   Shelter tours/walks
   Handing out enrichment treats/toys

Animal Interactions
   Humane Ed volunteers may supervise youth-
    animal interactions
     Mustcomplete dog handling training as an
      HSHV volunteer in order to walk a dog from
      kennel to room/play yard
    Cat interactions take place
    in a communal cat room
    Dog interactions take place
    in Ed. Center or dog play yard
Animal Interactions

   Rules for Animal Interactions
     No more than 2 hands petting an animal
     Animals must have an “escape” route

     Please do not pick up animals

     When with dogs in play yard,

      youth should not run toward dog
     Dog toy reminders
       Becareful when throwing toys
       Do not take toy from dog
       Do not hold toy over dog’s head
Passing Out Enrichment
               Dog or Cat Treats
                   May be given to any
                    cat/dog without a food bowl
                    sticker on their cage card
                   Cat treats may be placed
                    through bars of kennel
                    without touching cat
                   Dog treats may be slid under
                    kennel without touching dog
                   Youth should wait for
                    permission to pass out
                    enrichment, and should be
                    supervised by staff or
                    volunteer when doing so

     Give those students a job or

   Don’t start or continue until
    everyone is ready
   Always remain patient and calm
   Read the audience!

     Explain   or have a child explain words
   Species-ist comments
     Refer to animals as he/she not “it”

   Students and Snowbirds Welcome!
     If
       you know you will be gone for 90 days or
      more, let us know!
     Your account will be put in “vacation mode”

     May need to attend a refresher training upon
      your return
Volunteer Commitment
   We ask that you commit to 4-6 hours per
    month
   If you don’t volunteer for 90 days, you will
    receive and inactive notice email
     Respond  to the email or come in and
      volunteer within 2 weeks to keep your
      account active
     If we don’t hear from you, your account will
      be marked inactive
         If you’d like to stay involved, you will need to repeat
          training course

    Your first time leading a staff member will be
     there to help
• Discuss your next steps
    May need to observe again
    May be ready to start
    Might not be the best fit for you
