BIN COLLECTION SERVICE IMPORTANT INFORMATION We provide our residents with a three bin kerbside waste and recycling collection service for domestic waste (red lid), recycling (yellow lid) and green organics (green lid). It is important to read the enclosed information as it provides updated guidelines on the correct disposal of household waste items. DID YOU KNOW? • Just one recycling or green organics bin containing unsuitable materials can be enough to contaminate an entire truck load. This may result in it all going to landfill. • A recent audit showed that the average Onkaparinga red waste bin contains (by weight) 13% recyclables, 15% green organics, 6% other (electronic resources, clothing etc) and 66% waste 13% 15% 6% 66% THAT’S 34% OF RENEWABLE RESOURCES WASTED! The recycle symbol can be misleading… instead please follow the recommendations in this brochure.
3 FOOD SCRAPS IN YOUR ORGANICS BIN With fortnightly collection of the organics bin, we require ALL food scraps to be placed in the green/organics bin for composting. This includes fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood (including bones and shells), dairy, processed/baked goods, condiments/sauces. Only place items that can be composted in your organics bin. Place them in loose, wrapped in newspaper or use compostable bags. For more information about which items can go in each of your bins (Red, Yellow and Green) visit www.onkaparingacity.com/waste You can also contact our Waste and Recycling Education Team on 8384 0666 or mail@onkaparinga.sa.gov.au COMPOSTABLE BAGS LOOK FOR THE LOGO Using a compostable bag is a great way to keep your organics bin clean, reduce odours and pests. Food scraps can also be placed in the organics bin loose, wrapped in newspaper or in a paper bag. When buying compostable bags, look for the certified compostable logo on the wrapping. Do not use bags marked as degradable, biodegradable, oxo-degradable or plant-based – unless they are ALSO certified compostable.” IF IT GROWS IT CAN GO IN THE GREEN ORGANICS BIN
