Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan The tradition of selecting a Ms. Wesleyan began in 1929. It honors a senior woman who best represents the spirit of Wesleyan and the ideal of “sacrifice or service.” The Scotchman tradition honors a senior man who represents the same high ideals. Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan are the highest honors given to an outstanding senior man or woman based on scholarship, character and overall contributions to Dakota Wesleyan University. This year we choose our 92nd Ms. Wesleyan and 83rd Scotchman. “The Scotchman” Show me the Scotchman who doesn’t love the thistle; Show me the Englishman who doesn’t love the rose. Show me the true-hearted son of Old Wesleyan, Who doesn’t love the spot where the Tumbleweed grows. 1. All sing. 2. All hum the melody. Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan Committee: Tracy Dice, Kyle Herges, Megan Hullinger, Andrea Hult, John Kippes, Joel Reinesch The following men and women are the candidates for the Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan:

He participated in band, choir, Highlanders and CHAOS Club, and was a student ministry volunteer. Devin is the son of Dennis and Debra Bedke. This is not unique for many DWU students; instead, how I used that time in these activities is what made my experience different. Growing relationships and finding areas to serve others are the ways I was truly able to grow as a person while at DWU.” Layne Stafford, Arlington, Neb. Layne Stafford is from Arlington, Neb. Kindra feels her time here has allowed her to grow: “Dakota Wesleyan University has provided me with the opportunity and ability to be a part of a welcoming, close-knit community that encourages students to push themselves outside of their comfort zones. Throughout my four years here, I have grown ‘out of my shell’ and have developed as a Christian, as an athlete, as a student and as a community member. Our Mission is informed by our four values of learning, leadership, faith, and service. We implement our values as follows: LEARNING: We prepare students for meaningful careers in the context of a liberal arts education, which fosters adaptability, creative and critical thinking, artistic expression, experiential learning, innovation, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of our global community. LEADERSHIP: We challenge all members of our university community to be leaders of character who maximize their strengths in their personal and professional lives. We recognize that students can develop and display leadership skills throughout the entirety of their collegiate experiences. FAITH: As an engaged, faith-affirming community, we embrace John Wesley’s Christ-centered model of uniting knowledge, reason, and vital faith in curricular and cocurricular activities. We challenge students to examine their own values, while respecting the diversity on campus and throughout the world.
