Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan
The tradition of selecting a Ms. Wesleyan began in 1929. It honors a senior woman
who best represents the spirit of Wesleyan and the ideal of “sacrifice or service.” The
Scotchman tradition honors a senior man who represents the same high ideals. The
title was chosen from the first line of the school song, “The Scotchman.” Today’s
Ms. Wesleyan and Scotchman represent academic achievement, extracurricular
involvement and community service.
Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan are the highest honors given to an outstanding
senior man or woman based on scholarship, character and overall contributions to
Dakota Wesleyan University. This year we choose our 92nd Ms. Wesleyan and 83rd
Scotchman.

                                 “The Scotchman”
                 Show me the Scotchman who doesn’t love the thistle;
Show me the Englishman who doesn’t love the rose.
Show me the true-hearted son of Old Wesleyan,
Who doesn’t love the spot where the Tumbleweed grows.
                           1. All sing. 2. All hum the melody.

Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan Committee: Tracy Dice, Kyle Herges, Megan Hullinger,
Andrea Hult, John Kippes, Joel Reinesch

The following men and women are the candidates
for the Scotchman and Ms. Wesleyan:
Devin Bedke, Kearney, Neb.
Devin Bedke is a native of Kearney, Neb. The biology
major plans to pursue a graduate degree in healthcare. He
participated in band, choir, Highlanders and CHAOS Club,
and was a student ministry volunteer. Devin is the son of
Dennis and Debra Bedke. He feels his DWU experience
has been unique: “I was able to excel in both biology and
music. During my time here at DWU, I was distinguished
as one of the best students in the field of biology, receiving
the Harriet N. Houk Scholarship and was inducted into
the Sigma Zeta national honor society. I was also an
accomplished musician – involved in band, choir and the
auditioned Highlanders chamber choir – and was awarded
the Sinfonia Service Award.”

Joshua Garry, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Joshua Garry calls Sioux Falls home. The accounting major
will start a full-time position at ELO CPAs & Advisors in
Chamberlain after graduation. He also plans to pursue an
MBA at DWU. In addition, you may see him on the field this
fall when he comes back for a fifth year of football. Joshua’s
activities included football and Business Club. He is the son
of Chuck and Kim Garry. Joshua appreciates the people he
has met along the way: “The relationships that I was able to
create and be a part of with friends, staff and coaches here
at DWU were what made my experience different. I think
it is safe to say that one big aspect has been finding and
developing a relationship with Sara, my fiancé.”

Edgar Meza, Spearfish, S.D.
Edgar Meza, of Spearfish, is a wildlife management major.
His activities at DWU included officer for the Conservation
Club and member of Alpha Sigma Chapter of Sigma

to work for the Department of Game, Fish & Parks as a
conservation officer. He is the son of Jorge and Sonia
Meza. Edgar considers himself fortunate: “The experiences
I’ve gone through since my time at Dakota Wesleyan have
been unique and dear to my heart. I was fortunate enough
to hold many important roles that may have not been
attainable at another school. As a senior this year, I will
reminisce about the relationships and friendships I made
with my professors and peers at DWU. I know that my time
here as a Tiger will never be forgotten, and I will always
have a place in the Tiger family.”
Caden Milmine, Buffalo, Wyo.
Caden Milmine came to DWU from Buffalo, Wyo. He is
an accounting major who participated in football, track
and field, and Student Ministry Council. After graduation,
Caden plans to enroll in the MBA program and continue his
track career at Dakota Wesleyan. His parents are Ken and
Christy Milmine. Caden’s busy schedule was instrumental
in establishing his own different experience: “Being a
full-time student, a dual-sporter and continuing to grow
my faith took up much of my time. This is not unique for
many DWU students; instead, how I used that time in these
activities is what made my experience different. Growing
relationships and finding areas to serve others are the ways
I was truly able to grow as a person while at DWU.”

Layne Stafford, Arlington, Neb.

with an accounting major with an emphasis in sports

made these four years so special. I wouldn’t trade these
friendships and memories for anything.”

Wyatt Voelker arrived at Dakota Wesleyan from his
hometown of Newcastle, Wyo. He is a wildlife biology

Ministry Council, golf and the McGovern Engagement
Group. After graduation, Wyatt hopes to work toward a
master’s degree in predator ecology. His backup plan is
to find a job doing predator control. Wyatt is the son of
Ryan and Donna Voelker. Wyatt considers the individual
attention he received to be what is different about DWU:
“The science, chemistry and math professors go above
and beyond for their students, both inside and outside the
classroom, to ensure their success.”
Logan Amundson, Watertown, S.D.
Logan Amundson calls Watertown her hometown.

“DWU has impacted me in many ways, mainly because of
the amazing people here who make it feel like home and
who have pushed me to grow. DWU has allowed me to be

have helped me develop into the person I am today, giving
me memories that will last a lifetime.”

her time here has allowed her to grow: “Dakota Wesleyan
University has provided me with the opportunity and ability
to be a part of a welcoming, close-knit community that
encourages students to push themselves outside of their
comfort zones. Throughout my four years here, I have
grown ‘out of my shell’ and have developed as a Christian,
as an athlete, as a student and as a community member.
The experiences, opportunities and, most importantly, the
people have served to shape and mold me into who I am
today; for that, I am forever grateful.”
Abigail Hanson, Alexandria, S.D.
Abigail Hanson is from Alexandria. She majored in
accounting while at DWU and was a member of several
organizations: Dakota Wesleyan Choir, Wesleyan Bells,
Dakota Dynamics, Business Club (treasurer) and Student
Ministry Council. She was a student ambassador and
was part of the 2019 Peru mission trip team. She has
accepted a position at Schoenfish and Co. in Parkston as
an accountant and plans to take the CPA exam. Abigail’s

are important to her: “I think what made my experience
here at DWU different was the friendships and connections
that I made. Throughout my years here, I have had the
opportunity to meet my lifelong friends and make lasting
connections with faculty and staff who I now see as
mentors.”
Lacey Wipf, Freeman, S.D.
Lacey Wipf comes from Freeman. Her major is biology
with an individualized education minor. Lacey was involved
in a variety of activities at DWU: Dakota Wesleyan Choir,
Wesleyan Band, Wesleyan Bells, Highlanders, residence life

for pathology and hopes to eventually work as a pathology
assistant. Her parents are Larry and Sheila Wipf. Lacey
summed up her Wesleyan experience: “At DWU, I was given
the opportunity to be totally immersed and involved. I was
able to join clubs on campus, be involved in extracurricular
groups, be a part of the residence life team and still be
successful in my studies. To me, being able, and even being
encouraged to do all of those things, is the benefit of being
at a small school like Dakota Wesleyan.”

Mission Statement
As an inclusive educational community, Dakota Wesleyan University
provides a transformative learning experience that cultivates enduring
intellectual growth, ethically grounded leadership, intentional faith
exploration, and meaningful service.

Our Mission is informed by our four values of learning, leadership, faith,
and service. We implement our values as follows:

LEARNING: We prepare students for meaningful careers in the context of a liberal arts
education, which fosters adaptability, creative and critical thinking, artistic expression,
experiential learning, innovation, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of our
global community.

LEADERSHIP: We challenge all members of our university community to be leaders
of character who maximize their strengths in their personal and professional lives.
We recognize that students can develop and display leadership skills throughout the
entirety of their collegiate experiences.

FAITH: As an engaged, faith-affirming community, we embrace John Wesley’s
Christ-centered model of uniting knowledge, reason, and vital faith in curricular and
cocurricular activities. We challenge students to examine their own values, while
respecting the diversity on campus and throughout the world.

SERVICE: We inspire and empower our students, faculty, and staff to make a difference
through creative, genuine service. Rooted in our Methodist heritage, service is a
natural extension of our nurturing community.
