PRINCIPAL & DEAN’S MESSAGE As Principal & Dean of Pak International Medical College, Peshawar, I am proud to lead our institution’s commitment to improve the nation’s healthcare through excellence in medical education, biomedical research and patient care. Pak International Medical College will embody the tradition and prestige that will come with being one of the finest private medical colleges in the country. Our approach to teaching tomorrow’s doctors, scientists and healthcare professionals is among the most innovative. Through the curriculum, the College will impart knowledge to students in the undergraduate and post-graduate fields of medicine and will provide a collegial, nurturing environment that will foster intellectual discovery. As traditional methods of learning, discovery and healthcare delivery grow increasingly complex; Pak International Medical College is keeping pace and breaking new ground. Among our greatest accomplishments are the recruitment of clinical and research faculty of national renown, the application of new information technology to further online, and the expansion of our academic faculty to better meet the needs of our students. We are continuously trying to appoint highly qualified teaching faculty in all subjects of basic and clinical sciences and using modern technologies to improve the standard of this institution. Our faculty and students will work together on research projects of basic and clinical sciences. DEAN BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES MESSAGE I take this opportunity to re-affirm my faith in the educated youth of Pakistan, as they play pivotal role in the development of progressive Pakistan. The vision and mission of youth needs proper guidelines to bring about much needed improvements in our education system particularly in the field of medicine. Viewed in this perspective, Private Medical Colleges and Universities have to play an important role, as the entire responsibility of providing quality education cannot be shouldered by the Public Sector alone. Pak International Medical College, Peshawar has been established in 2009 with the aim to live up to the standards of medical education and to compete at national and international levels. To meet the requirements, the college is housed in a purpose built compound providing all the bio-medical and technical facilities for imparting training in the technical skills required by a medical graduate. The College has its own 360 bedded teaching Hospital i.e., Peshawar Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Fauji Foundation Hospital (200 bedded) is also attached with Pak International Medical College, Peshawar, where clinical students of the college use the hospital for teaching and training since 2012. Another important area of interest in the college is continued medical educational (CME) programs in which the college and the attached hospital arrange seminars, conferences, and on- hand skill activities. Various special workshops are also organized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan which are attended by the teaching staff. The College is recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and is affiliated with the Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. Students have their mentors under mentorship program. Thus the student’s academic, social and psychological aspects are looked after. Students are guided and counseled in their carrier selection and post graduation. Apart from the well-organized academic activities, literary, sports and other extra-curricular activities are regularly held for the staff and students of the college. May almighty Allah bless you in your lifetime noble endeavors. PROF. DR. MUHAMMAD SHIRAZ KHAN MBBS, M.Phil
DEAN CLINICAL SCIENCES MESSAGE Doctors play a role model in our society. Doctors are looked upto as Messiahs by the nation. The aim of medical education at medical colleges is to produce (Medical practitioner) doctor. Pre clinical consist of the basic sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. Paraclinical includes pharmacology and pathology. Clinical studies consist of internal Medicine, Surgery Pediatric, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Eye and ENT etc. Good medical education is an important pillar of the education system of a nation. Patients need good doctors. Good doctor make the care of their patients their 1st concern. They should be competent, hard working and they keep their knowledge and skill up to date. They should establish good relation with patients and colleagues. They should be honest trust worthy and act with dignity. I feel that at Pak International Medical College we will use all means to produce good doctor who will contribute to the Health of the community. TEACHING PROGRAMS CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK Students will experience integrated curriculum as developed by university in line with the regulations of the controlling authorities of the Medical and Dental Colleges of Pakistan. INTEGRATED CURRICULUM It comprises of system-based modules such as musculoskeletal system. It links basic science knowledge to clinical problems both in a horizontal and vertical manner. It encourages better learning environment to students and prepares them for better clinical practice. Case based discussions based on themes and problem, the use of information technology and early exposure to clinics, wards, and skills acquisition in skills lab are characteristics of integrated teaching program. It is anticipated that integrated curriculum will foster better graduate outcomes for the delivery of enhanced health care delivery. LEARNING METHODOLOGIES The following learning and teaching methods are used to promote better understanding: • Lectures • Hospital / Clinic visits • Small Group Session • Problem Based Learning • Peer Assisted Learning • Case- Based Learning • Practical • Skills session • Self-Directed Learning • Community Based Medical Education
LECTURES It is a large group based learning where the tutor dedicatedly teach and students are passive learners. It may have an interactive component. Usually a PowerPoint (PPT) is used for teaching but other means (e.g, videos and pictures) are also can be used. HOSPITAL VISITS Students visit patients in hospital or clinical settings in small groups. This helps students to relate knowledge of basic and clinical sciences of the relevant module in clinical setting. SMALL GROUP SESSION This format helps the students in clarifying important concepts related to basic and/or clinical sciences and their relation to patient care. It helps the students in better acquiring knowledge, skills and attitude.
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING Problem based learning (PBL) is a very effective small group learning modality. It helps in acquiring cognitive skills and leads to deep learning in students engaged in PBL session. PBL increases the motivation level of students and encourages self-directed learning. This clearly improves the life-long learning motivation and increases interest in the subject matter. Students participating in PBL use “triggers” from the given scenarios that helps them in shaping their learning objectives. This is followed by: self-directed study; and group discussion to ensure that the acquired knowledge is refined and updated. In comparison to the traditional lecture system, PBL inculcates other graduate attributes in students including teamwork, communication skills, problem solving skills, independent learning, respect and information sharing to others. PBL thus helps in obtaining knowledge, developing generic skills and attitudes in the participating students. PEER ASSISTED LEARNING Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is an informative, interactive, and interesting way of learning. One approach is group-based peer assisted learning. The role of a tutor is to open the forum and present a topic followed by a discussion between the participants. It usually consists of a small group of 6 – 10 peers. All peers contribute according to the level of their knowledge and understanding, thereby, disseminating and gaining the knowledge at the same time from each other through discussion.
CASE- BASED LEARNING To facilitate more elaborate and integrated learning, clinical cases are introduced and this is termed case based learning (CBL). The goal of CBL is to prepare students for clinical practice, through the use of authentic clinical cases. It links theory to practice, through the application of knowledge to the cases, using inquiry-based learning methods.
