The Domestic Church Since the beginning of Christianity, families have been referred to as "domestic churches" or "little churches." The belief behind this view of family life is that the way we live out our Christianity makes a difference in the lives of the Body of Christ and, ultimately, affects the whole world. Parents are the first "catechists" (teacher of the faith) for their children. How we share Christ with them and practice our faith at home is the foundation and most important factor in raising our kids to be strong Christians in their adult lives. In an effort to better support you in your domestic church and also help your kids have the best Mass experience they can on the weekends, we are going to have a domestic church table in the vestibule. The table will have sacramentals and prayer materials, information about Church feast days your family can celebrate, a new children's Mass bulletin, and craft materials that help them understand, grow, and learn. Please stop by the resource table and and pick up materials you and your family can use! The Importance of Mass & Adoration As Catholics, we believe that the Eucharist is the "source and summit of the Christian life." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1324-1327) Fr. John would like to remind and encourage you that, not only does our Friday all-school Mass not replace our Sunday Mass obligation, but also your family's presence is very important to the Church. Proverbs 22:16 says "raise up a child in the way they should go and, when they are old, they won't depart from it." The Eucharist we celebrate heals us and empowers us to go out from the Mass and do God's work in the world. We also invite you to bring your children to our adoration chapel/Holy Souls Shrine and adore Jesus' presence in the Blessed Sacrament. We hope to see you at Mass this weekend! **Special note for those with health concerns: Our 10:30 a.m. Mass is now a mask-required Mass. We also have outdoor speakers and some of our families sit on the benches outside church or bring outdoor chairs from home. Simon Peter School Scripture Study back in the classroom at HSS A scripture study program is being offered again this year for Holy Souls 3rd - 6th graders called Simon Peter School Scripture Study. Written by Tammy Woell, a Little Rock resident and the co-founder of the Little Rock Scripture study and distributed by the Women of Grace ministry under the Benedicta Institute. Simon/Peter is a children's scripture study ministry that begins with early grades memorizing one verse of the Bible for every letter of the alphabet (3rd Grade) and then moves on to the book of Luke (4 grade), followed by the Acts of the Apostles (5th grade), then concluding with Exodus (6th Grade). This study is an effort to keep students engaged during the years between First Communion & Confirmation. In addition to the bi-weekly classes that will be taught by parent volunteers, we will end the year with celebrations and special gifts, like Bibles, to mark their learning milestones. Classes will start in October and end in May. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact Samantha Minster at sminster@holysouls.org or contact her at the church office.
