Task No. 1 Let’s Build: A Plant Cell This plant cell activity will help you identify the 10 main organelles that make up a plant cell. The organelles included are: *cell wall *chloroplasts *cell *ribosome membrane *mitochondria *cytoplasm *endoplasmic reticulum *nucleus *Golgi body *vacuole This file includes a picture, name tag and function tag for each of the ten organelles. Students choose a color (or can be assigned a color) for each one and color the picture, name tag and function tag that same color. Then pick a different color and move on to the next organelle. The finished product should look similar to the one pictured below. A completed plant cell For organelles that are too small to cut individually, color around the organelle with whatever color you choose for the cytoplasm and then cut.
Student Directions • Color the organelle, name tag and function tag all the same color. • For example: color nucleus, nucleus name tag and nucleus function tag blue; color chloroplast, chloroplast name tag and chloroplast function tag green, etc. • Cut and paste the organelles to make a cell. • Cut out the name and function tags. Match them up and then paste around the cell. • Draw arrows from the tags to the organelle they describe. Vacuole Nucleus Mitochondria Ribosome Chloroplast Golgi Body Endoplasmic Reticulum controls what enters and leaves the cell Transport materials in the cell fluid that fills the cell command center, directs the cell’s activities receives, packages and distributes materials Protect and supports the cell Builds proteins for cell functions converts energy to food for the cell Powerhouse of the cell, produces energy storage area for the cell
Task No. 2 Latest Science Discoveries 2020-2021 • Write a paragraph about any two latest scientific discoveries 2020-2021. • A link has been given below for your reference: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/10-awesome-science-discoveries- you-may-have-missed-in-2020
Task No. 3 The Mars Rovers Over the years, NASA has sent five robotic vehicles, called Rovers, to Mars. The names of fiver Rovers are: Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, Curiosity and Perseverance. • Go through the link given below to read about “The Mars Rovers” and write what information was collected by them. https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/mars-rovers/en/
Task No. 4 Innovative Science Ideas Make a scientific innovation of your own by looking at the examples given below. Example No. 1: Oxygen/ Carbon dioxide level indicator in car. System to detect levels of oxygen/ carbon dioxide in the closed car and open windows when oxygen level drops or carbon dioxide level rises, thereby preventing accidental deaths of children or pets locked inside the car.
Example No. 2: Pen to check concentration A pen with pressure sensors on the grip to indicate loss of concentration when the grip loosens.
Example No. 3: Device to indicate sudden fall or onset of convulsions/seizures A wearable device that alerts if user falls suddenly; useful for old people, and those suffering from fits, convulsions, seizures etc. This will help keep an electronic eye (if integrated with mobile) on one’s loved ones to track if they were okay or not. Task No. 6 Science Game Let’s be creative! Describe the scientific terms given in an interesting manner without using the enlisted words!
Aim • To understand the orbit of the Moon and why we are having a super blue blood moon.
What is a Supermoon? A full moon is when we can see the whole of the Moon in the sky at night – which is a fantastic sight! On 31st January, there was a 'supermoon’. This means the Moon looked bigger than it usually does to us on Earth!
What is a Bluemoon? A blue moon is when there are two full moons in one calendar month. There were two full moons in January, one on 2nd January and one on 31st January . This is where we get the expression ‘Once in a blue moon’ from, which means something that rarely happens.
What is a Bloodmoon? A blood moon is a lunar eclipse when the Earth, the Sun and the Moon are almost exactly in line. The sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere makes the Moon look a reddish colour. On 31st January, there was be a ‘bloodmoon’.
The Super Blue Blood Moon For the first time in 152 years, a supermoon, blue moon and blood moon happened on the same day, 31st January 2018. The last time this happened was in 1886!
Shapes of the Moon Full Moon New Moon Crescent Gibbous
Why Does the Moon Appear to Change Shape The Moon reflects the Sun’s light. What part we see of the Moon depends on Sunlight where the Moon is when orbiting the Earth.
Waxing and Waning Waning means that the Moon is getting smaller. Waxing means that the Moon is getting bigger.
Waxing Half Moon Waxing Waxing Gibbous Crescent Sunlight Full Moon New Moon Waning Waning Gibbous Crescent Waning Half Moon
What Is a Supermoon? A supermoon looks a lot bigger and about 30 times brighter than the moon usually looks. This is because it is closer to the Earth than normal. Its official name is a ‘super perigee moon’ but people just call it ‘supermoon’.
Why Will There Be a Supermoon? The Moon actually orbits the Earth in an oval shape, and not a perfectly circular one as many people believe. This is why the Moon is sometimes closer to the Earth and other times it is further away. It means that the distance from the Earth to the Moon varies from 225 623 miles to 252 008 miles, depending on its position in its orbit.
Why Will There Be a Blood Moon? When the Moon orbits the Earth, it reaches a point where the Moon, Earth and Sun are all aligned. This can cause an eclipse. The Sun, Moon and Earth are all aligned, and that the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. The light from the sun passing through the Earth’s atmosphere will make the moon appear a reddish colour.
Aim • To understand the orbit of the Moon and why we are having a super blue blood moon.
