What is a hip spica?
A hip spica can be described as ‘plaster cast
trousers’. Hip spicas are made from ‘plaster of Paris’
and/or resin (a synthetic material), with a soft lining
underneath. There are lots of different types of hip
spica but generally they start from above your child’s
stomach and stop just before their ankles. The exact
length of your child’s hip spica and the position of
their legs will depend on your child’s condition and
surgical needs.
