This means instead of bus operators SBS Transit and SMRT owning bus assets and running bus services, the LTA will take over all the bus assets. But the running of the bus services is outsourced to private operators selected through a competitive tendering process. Commuters should enjoy better service levels because of the element of competition amongst the operators. 3 North-South Line: Back to Speed Trains that had to slow down for maintenance works along the North-South Line have resumed normal speeds. Work now starts on the East-West Line. 1 Since April, commuters travelling from Jurong East to Marina Bay on the North-South Line found themselves arriving 10 minutes faster. This is because trains no longer had to slow down since maintenance works on the track were completed in April after three years. The replacement of 96,000 old timber sleepers on the tracks to new concrete ones means the trains can now travel at 80km per hour along the entire line, instead of having to slow down to between 40 to 60km per hour at certain portions. Works to replace more than 92,000 timber sleepers along the East-West Line has started. Commuters travelling along the line may experience slower journeys as speed restrictions are imposed for safety, and end-to-end travel time may be longer by about 10 minutes. The works will be completed by the end of 2016. The replacement of the sleepers—rectangular slabs that support the tracks—are part of a programme to boost MRT reliability and service levels. The LTA and train operators are also upgrading the signalling system, adding new trains into the fleet and tightening operating standards. 1 With the timber sleepers replaced, commuters get to enjoy quieter and smoother rides on the North-South Line.
4 Canberra Station: Residents living around the Sembawang Springs area can look forward to faster rides to the city centre or Jurong East once the Canberra station is completed in 2019. Work Starts Construction work on the new Canberra station located on the existing North-South line between the Sembawang and Yishun MRT stations started in April. The $90 million construction contract was awarded to China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd (Singapore), which is also working on the construction of the Downtown Line 3 Kaki Bukit and Geylang Bahru stations. When complete, the station will have five entrances linking it to the new housing estates across Canberra Link. 1 1 Artist impression of the upcoming Canberra station.

Until then, you can find it online at Land Transport Authority – We Keep Your World Moving Facebook page.
7 International Wins for Singapore Transport Innovative transport developments in Singapore continue to win big at the global UITP awards. 1 At an award ceremony held by one of the largest and oldest public 2 transport organisation in the world – the UITP (International Association of Public Transport) – Singapore won an award and received two recognition for three transport projects: • The “Travel Smart Programme” edged out two other finalists from the City of Milan (Italy) and Metropolitano de Lisboa (Portugal), to claim the UITP “Mobility Demand Management” Award. The Travel Smart Programme (Travel Smart Network, Travel Smart Rewards and Free Pre-Peak Travel) works to nudge commuters to travel off-peak. • Project Planet analyses travel data (e.g. farecard information) to better understand travel patterns, to improve public transport services. It won a Special Recognition Award. • The fare review mechanism by the Public Transport Coucil (PTC) is an effective formula, which enables PTC to make fair and balanced recommendations for public transport fares. It was one of four finalists shortlisted for the “Smart Financing and Business Models” award. The UITP is an international organisation with over 3,400 public transport providers from 92 countries. 1 LTA Chairman Michael Lim (middle) received the award for ‘Travel Smart Programme’ from UITP President Sir Peter Hendy CBE (right) and UITP Secretary General Alain Flaush. 2 LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong (middle) received the award for ‘Project PLANET’ from UITP President Sir Peter Hendy CBE (right) and Chairman UITP Asia Pacific Division Morris Cheung.
8 Singapore Wins Bid to Host International Transport Event The 26th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress will be held in Singapore for the first time in 2019. In 2019, over 5,000 visitors from all over the world will convene in Singapore for a much-anticipated gathering of like-minded professionals to exchange knowledge on intelligent transport systems. The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress is held annually for representatives from the public, private and academic sectors to talk about how data can make it easier for people to get around. The host of the ITS World Congress rotates among three major geographical regions – America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Singapore will host the 26th ITS World Congress in 2019 after Melbourne in 2016. The intelligent Transportation Society of Singapore and LTA pulled all the stops to convince the ITS Asia Pacific Board of Directors that Singapore was a suitable venue to host the congress, including hosting the ITS Asia Pacific Secretariat officials during their on-site assessment in December last year. 1 “ With Singapore moving towards being a Smart Nation, we are well placed to host this prestigious event. We will take this opportunity to showcase how we have been able to use smart technology and other innovative ways to transform our land transport systems and, in turn, improve travelling experience of all users. -LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong ” 1 LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong (first from left) at the ITS Asia Pacific Board of Directors meeting in Nanjing where Singapore was announced as the winner to host the 26 th Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress.
9 Green = Bus Seats are Available The new feature in the award-winning MyTransport.SG app not only tells you what time your bus is arriving, it also tells you if there is space for you on board. Red, green and yellow are the colours of the traffic light. Now, these colours are being used in the MyTransport.SG app to denote how much sitting or standing space is available on the next bus. A green bar below the estimated bus arrival time means you can get a seat on that bus, a yellow means you can only stand, while red means even standing space is limited. MyTransport.SG, which has had 1 million downloads since its lauch in 2011, is being used by 300,000 users every month to access transport information on their mobile phones. MyTransport.SG is available for download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store. Apart from the new feature, LTA has also worked with SBS Transit and SMRT to sharpen the accuracy of the bus arrival times shown in MyTransport.SG for over 4,700 public buses plying over 360 routes.
10 Taxi Fare Structure Reviewed Many taxi commuters have commented that they find the taxi fare structure to be confusing and so LTA undertook a review earlier this year. As a result, most parts of how the fare structure is calculated will be standardised within or across taxi companies, including unit fares, peak hour surcharges, booking charges, city area charges, midnight and airport surcharges, and additional passenger fees. This is so that taxi commuters will have an easier time comparing rates and choosing which taxi they wish to board. The exact rates are expected to be finalised during the second half of 2015, after changes to the Public Transport Council (PTC) Act are made. Taxi companies will also have the discretion to apply to the PTC if they wish to have different or new fare components. Once in place, the standardised fare structure will apply to an estimated 28,000 taxis on the road.
11 Greater Connectivity with Seletar Aerospace Flyover In anticipation of heavier road traffic around the Seletar area—due to the upcoming industrial area at Sengkang West—the LTA has built a new flyover and two new roads. The new Seletar Aerospace Flyover will make it easier for 1 motorists in the area to connect to major expressways and relieve traffic congestion along the one-lane Jalan Kayu. • The Seletar Aerospace Flyover is a dual three-lane flyover that opened on 16 May. It connects directly to the Central Expressway (CTE), Seletar Expressway (SLE) and Tampines Expressway (TPE). • The new Sengkang West Road allows motorists travelling from Yio Chu Kang to get onto the TPE via the flyover. Previously, motorists could only do so via Jalan Kayu. • The new Seletar Aerospace Way allows motorists to travel directly to Seletar Aerospace Park from the expressway. In total, the 3km stretch of flyover and new roads took $80 million and four years to build. 1 Project team members led by Senior Project Manager, Road Construction 1, Albert Leng (bottom right).
12 Tapping On Youths for App Ideas LTA organised a hackathon where participating youths were inspired to come up with transport apps to win a competition. 1 What if there was an app that told a wheel-chair bound person in the MRT station where to find help? Or an app that calls a visually-impaired person when his bus arrives so he can raise his arm to flag down the bus? These were some of the prize-winning ideas generated by over 180 youths attending the LTA’s first hackathon held between 16 to 19 April, an event for computer lovers to get together and indulge in transport-related programming and coding. Held at the Devan Nair Institute, youths from universities, polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education and a handful of start-ups, were treated to mentoring sessions by the likes of staff from computer giant Microsoft before competing in earnest. 2 They had at their fingertips a wealth of transport-related information from LTA’s DataMall- a virtual “shop” of data – on areas including taxi availability and bus arrivals. In total, the youths came up with over 20 new apps to equip users with commuting information on-the-go and improve public transport experience. “ The amount of thought and effort placed in the details of the execution - from meticulously providing ” clear documentation for the data sets to being very responsive and helpful with any queries that my team had – means that I think the LTA event is on par or even better than those run by professional hackathon organisers, and they pulled it off in just six weeks! ” -Participants Shao Ming and Soo Lin from Team SmartCommute “ This hackathon is testament to how your passion in technology and big data will make a difference to Singapore’s land transport system, and help improve our quality of life. ” ” -LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong addressing the competitors 1 Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (middle), Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew (right) and LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong (left) interacting with finalist Team SmartCommute. 2 The judges evaluating a presentation by Team Happy Wheels during the short-listing session.
