The start of the new year often inspires us to make much-needed changes in our lives and offers the opportunity for a fresh start. For those wanting to improve their physical and mental health, the start of a new year Simple Resolutions to Start the Year signifies the beginning of positive change. Whether you prefer to set small goals for yourself or approach each new year as an opportunity for a complete life “makeover,” here are three simple resolution ideas to help you kick-start the year: o When it comes to nutrition, eating fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in nutrients is the best way to go. Eating fewer processed foods and more fresh foods will make a huge difference in the way you look and feel. Start eating more fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains and gradually increase your consumption of these nutrient-rich foods over time while decreasing your intake of less healthy alternatives. o It’s not always easy remaining close to friends and family who don’t live right down the street. Fortunately, there are many resources you can use to revive neglected relationships. One of the quickest ways to reconnect is with a simple phone call. Sending a “thinking of you” card of letter is also a nice way to keep in touch. If you’re technologically savvy, social media sites like Facebook make it exceedingly easy to stay connected with friends and family from all around the world. o As we age, it is important to remain active - both mentally and physically. The more you use your mind, the better it will function in the long-term. Read. Do crossword puzzles. Try Sudoku. Socializing also gives your brain a boost. For older adults, physical activity can be safe and healthy even if you have heart disease, diabetes, or arthritis. In fact, many of these conditions can improve with mild to moderate physical activity. Health Corner It's an acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses A or B. While most people who get the flu recover in a week or two, others can develop severe and potentially life-threatening complications. According to the Mayo Clinic, those most threatened are children under five and adults older than 65, pregnant women up to two weeks postpartum, and others with weakened immune systems. If the flu strikes, stay home. You're sick and highly contagious. Embrace your downtime and heal your body with it. Curl up on the couch, read, watch TV, and nod off to sleep anytime. Get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night--your body is fighting a virus. Drink plenty of fluids for either the flu or a cold. Fluids hydrate your respiratory system and convert thick mucus into a liquid you can spit out. An expectorant will thin the mucus, too. For congestion, the Mayo Clinic recommends over-the-counter decongestant tablets like Sudafed and nasal sprays. Studies suggest they narrow blood vessels in the lining of the nose and help reduce swelling. Of course, consulting your physician prior to starting any treatment is very important. Remember that protein is essential to maintaining body strength. Among your best sources for it are lean meat, poultry, fish, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, and seeds. For your cold, recent studies suggest that chicken soup may indeed degrade its symptoms. Nobody really knows why, but the evidence implies this time-honored remedy helps subdue inflammation. According to the American College of Chest Physicians, chicken soup appears to slow the movement of neutrophils, the white blood cells that harbor acute infection. Tests indicate the vegetables and chicken pieces combine to produce "inhibitory activity." If you try zinc for a cold, be sure to follow dosage instructions carefully: Harvard Medical School recommends 15-25 mg per day.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Please welcome to the Community Paul Schmidt! Paul was born in Oakland, CA, and went to San Jose City College and later San Jose State University. He was a police officer with San Jose for 30 years, and after retiring became a reserve officer. Paul was also in the Coast Guard for a time in the 1960’s. While with the police force, Paul became a boys and girls soccer coach with PAL (Police Athletic League) and - despite not knowing anything about soccer when he started out - even- tually became PAL Coach of the Year. Because Paul is so tall, the girls on his soccer teams affectionately gave him the nickname, “Big Bird!” Paul and his wife Carol have been married for 50 years, have one son, one daughter, and 3 grandsons (two of whom are adopted). Paul and Carole’s daughter and son in law are missionaries in Strasbourg, France! Paul was an avid fisherman, loved to camp, and enjoys any- thing having to do with music. Give a warm hello to Paul Schmidt!
Exercise Can Help Ease Depression Studies by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) estimate that 7 million American adults over the age of 65 experience depression each year. Many of these individuals are at a higher risk as a result of a sedentary lifestyle and medication side effects. Studies have revealed the positive effects of exercise on seniors, regardless of gender or age. The effects are especially significant in patients with high levels of anxiety and depression. The changes in levels of anxiety, mood and depression after exercise are most often explained by: u A rise in endorphin levels. (Exercise promotes psychological well-being by increasing the secretion of endorphins, which reduces the sensation of pain and produce a state of euphoria.) u Exercise leads to an increase in the availability of brain neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) that are diminished with depression. u Exercise also increases body temperature and blood circulation to the brain, both of which help contribute to a rise in an overall feeling of well-being. In senior living communities that feature Live 2 B Healthy’s senior fitness classes, care staff and management report a significant improvement in socialization, mood, appetite and sleep among those residents who regularly attend fitness classes. If you or a loved one suspect depression, consult a professional to rule out other possible causes, but also consider giving our classes a try. In many cases, just getting out among a group with similar interests and being physically active can help alleviate the most troublesome symptoms of depression and put a little extra energy into your day. u www.Live2BHealthy.com u
