A Note From The General Manager Club Staff Happy Memorial Day! I hope this finds everyone Mike Zadalis healthy and doing well! The Club is thriving with a full PGA General Manager membership (both golf and social) and building large Chief Operating Officer waiting lists to get in. I strongly believe this is due to the culture we have created and 100% about the people, Bobby O’Keefe staff, and members alike. Like our theme for our 2021 PGA Director of Golf business plan “nurture the root to produce great fruit” with all the people being the root and the results being Jonathan Mielke the fruit. Take care of the people and everything else will PGA Director of Instruction take care of itself. Justin Herron Last year’s President Amy Benge was nicknamed Head Golf Professional the “Covid President”, and I think this year we could nickname President Todd Carey the “Concrete Sam Martin President” or “Projects President”. We are certainly First Assistant Golf Professional making up for last year in a big way with so much going on. The new patio turned out fabulous along Dan Maddox Director of Grounds with the upgrades to the firepit and grilling area. Lots of great upgrades and improvements at the pool and Andy Rhylander tennis areas. The weather has not cooperated with us at all in trying to get the tennis courts Golf Course Superintendent resurfaced and painted, the parking lots resurfaced, and with our new tennis viewing deck. These are all still works in progress and will need your patience as we finish them up. The Ashley Dougherty new tennis court lighting is amazing as well. Please remember we are completing these Director of Membership & Marketing projects for your enjoyment, out of necessity, and to improve. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments we ask that you respectfully send them to me and not our frontline Olivia Lynes staff, we appreciate it. Office Administrator We have had wonderful attendance and great feedback with all our many events we have Becky Rohwer been hosting, both golf and social alike. Please make sure you visit our events calendar on the Systems Facilitator OHCC website as we have so many more great events planned for your enjoyment. A very special Thank You to all those that volunteered on Monday, May 24th that donated your Brian Shields time and hard work getting all the divots filled with sand. It is greatly appreciated and shows Director of Food & Beverage your pride in our great Club. Candy Mapes We have had great staff orientations and training sessions in every department, and I am very Events Manager excited about the Team that we have put together. We are planning and set up for a successful year! Jacob Wuestewald Assistant Food & Beverage Director Keep your eyes and ears open for a giant party that we are planning and putting together in Zach Chingren early August to hopefully celebrate how well our Club did getting through the pandemic. I Executive Chef could not be prouder of our staff for all their hard work, innovation, and passion. However, we never could have done it without the great support, dedication, and input from our great Wilfred Ambrosio members…total TEAM effort! Sous Chef I want to wish Dan Maddox and his wife Joyce a very happy 40th wedding anniversary, and Tom Lilly Becky Rohwer our Systems Facilitator for reaching a major mile stone of 40 years of dedicated Head Tennis Professional employment at Oak Hills! Jacob Whelan We look forward to a great summer and as always please feel free to reach out to me with any Co-Director of Aquatics questions, comments, concerns, and feedback as we are always looking for ways to improve. Alex Jones Sincerely, Co-Director of Aquatics Make sure to update us with any new Brad Sauser contact information including email Building Maintenance Supervisor Mike Zadalis addresses, to insure you receive all of our Dan Zadalis PGA General Manager communications on Club updates, excit- Services Manager ing upcoming events, and more!
The Board President Letter Summer is here and that means enjoying our Club that much more. I first and foremost want to thank the Board of Directors and our Management Team for planning, implementing, and performing the many on- going improvement projects you have been seeing around the Club. It hasn’t been easy, and the weather hasn’t cooperated, but great progress is being made. All of the committees and boards have been meeting regularly with alot of great input, ideas, and feedback. I personally want to thank all of you for volunteer- ing your time and dedication to helping us make our Club even better. Thanks to all the members and staff that came out to help fill all the divots with sand, it is a great tes- tament to the pride we all have in our Club. That being said, please always do your part in filling divots with sand, fixing ball marks, raking the bunkers, driving carts responsibly and respectfully, and ensuring all your guests do so as well. Additionally, please make sure your group always plays within our pace of play guidelines and finishes right around 4 hours or less. This all ensures maximum enjoyment for all our members and their guests. I have asked Mike, his management Team, and the Board of Directors to come up with our next Master Plan for not only the immediate future, but also for the long term. We have reformed the Facility Enhancement Committee and are researching every aspect of financing options, savings, and immediate project needs, along with longer term project needs. Please feel free to email your thoughts and ideas as we will add them to the list to be discussed and considered by the committee as we put the list together for prioritization. Lastly, please always treat the entire staff and board members with respect, professionalism, and courteous. They are all working hard to make sure Oak Hills offers the best facilities, quality products, high levels of service, and ultimately the best experiences possible. Thank you and see you at the Club. Sincerely Congratulations on their Holes in One to Mel Jelkin on #9 (May 15) and Elly Speece at the MIAA Conference Championship at Hillcrest in Oklahoma! Todd Carey Oak Hills Inc. News From your Oak Hills Management Teams... Golf: June is one of the busiest and most exciting months of the year! Junior Golf programs will be starting, Match Play is underway, and the Member/Member tournament towards the end of the month will certainly not disappoint. To ensure we offer the best service to our Members and Guest, please continue to update your tee time reservation with specific names so we can have your clubs pulled and/or carts cleaned and ready. In addi- tion, please remember to replace TBD’s as soon as you can as they will fall off within 48 hours of your tee time and it will allow other members to make plans accordingly further in advance. We would like to thank the members for coming out and volunteering their time to repair divots in our fairways in late May. We had over 62 members help us and what a difference that makes. Please continue to fill your divots with sand and repair ball marks as play and stress on the course will continue to pick up. Bobby O'Keefe PGA Director of Golf Food & Beverage: June is here, and your club is buzzing with excitement! There are many projects nearing the finish line that everyone will enjoy this summer, and for years to come. We are well into our wedding and graduation season. If you have an event you would like to plan at the Club, please give me a call, I will make the planning simple and fun. Let us do the work so you can enjoy. It is exciting to see so many of our members relaxing on the patio or in the pub. Staff has been gearing up for a busy summer. Checkout your calendar and watch for emails on our many upcoming events. Oak Hills is the place to be in 2021! I know we can all agree we are going to have a great summer without all the restrictions, let’s all continue to be smart and safe. For the many members who know me and have grown with me over the past 38 years, I love you like family. For those who are new, I look forward to working with you! Any events, thoughts, or ideas, please call, email, or catch me at the Club. I look forward to work- ing with you and making your vision come to life. See you at the club soon. Candy Mapes Events Manager Grounds: My grandfather told me when I was a youngster, be quiet, can you hear the corn grow? What he said many years ago still applies today, can you hear the rough grow, an inch per day? This surge of growth is hap- pening everywhere, my lawn, your lawn, and every golf course. In a few weeks it will slow down as the tem- peratures start to increase. We are currently mowing the rough over 3 times per week, but it seems we are not mowing at all. Overall, the course is responding well to the spring treatments including aerification, top dressing, fertilizers, and turf protection products. With our summer staff arriving and finishing up with the spring projects, we are ready to provide you with outstanding course conditions. We want to thank all members who participated with the year’s first divot party. I drove the fairways the next morning and was very pleased with the quality, and every divot was filled. Job well done! Just want to recap on our current project, the extended patio was back filled, new irrigation was installed, and new sod. After Memo- rial weekend, we will start to receive the plant material for the new landscaping. I want to thank the design work of Kinghorn Gar- dens. Enjoy your golf course. Please repair ball marks, fill divots, rake bunkers and follow all cart directions and rope. Also, do not drive and walk with pull carts through the natives. The tracts last a very long time. Hope everyone enjoyed Memorial weekend and let the summer begin. Dan Maddox Director of Grounds
Chef Notes The Pool is open, and Summer is finally here. Covid is starting to wind down, and more people are coming out to the club. We had a great turn out for both Mother’s Day and Easter Brunch as well as many new events that were well at- tended! Lots of graduations this may and many weddings to look forward to this summer. We opened up the new patio expansion and had a great kick off weekend with our Acoustics and Cocktails event. I want to take this time to thank our membership for supporting our Club throughout the pandemic. We couldn’t have done it without your loyalty and support. We were able to weather that storm a lot better than most and for that I am grateful. I hope to see all the mem- bers out taking advantage of our club this summer, from the pool to all the great events. Here is a fantastic cookie bar recipe that makes one half sheet pan. Zach Chingren Executive Chef EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Our June employee spotlight is our Systems Facilitator, Becky Rohwer! Becky started her career at Oak Hills on June 10, 1981 in the front office as an assistant. Through the years Becky continued to learn, grow and put tireless hours in at the Club until she came to her current title of Systems Facilitator/Accounts Receivable. Through the last 40 years she met and came to know many co-workers and members who she values not only as friends but as family. When Becky is not at the Club she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and especially crafting! As you celebrate your 40th work anniversary, it’s time to reflect on your contributions and achievements, the things that make you unique. Your dedication and passion for your work make you what you are, one in a million! Please join us in congratulating Becky on her 40 years at Oak Hills Country Club!
A Note from our Youth Program Instructors Junior Golf The youth golf season is underway and we have many fantastic opportunities for our youth athletes at Oak Hills. I will be coaching three different youth golf teams this year: Team Golf Offsprings, the PGA Junior Travel Team and the Special Olympics youth team the Eagles. We have many talented athletes who are going to turn a lot of heads with their golfing ability. Please make sure to follow their season on the Oak Hills Facebook, Twitter and Clubster’s page. You can also follow the progress of the June academy sessions as our youth athletes learn the game of golf through long-term athlete development programs. The true benefit of the academy is to develop the junior athlete’s love for the game and the physical activity. You’ll see it through the smiles, laughter and determination. That’s what sets this program apart from others. Jonathan Mielke, PGA Director of Instruction Swim The pool staff was excited and ready to finally open the pool Memorial Weekend and see all of our Oak Hills members once more! We are happy summer is finally here and looking forward to all the lasting memories that will follow. Swim Team will be here before we know it, my assistant coaches and I are ex- cited for a season with a full meet schedule. It is looking to shape up to be a fantastic summer and we are more than ready for it to be here! Alex Jones Co-Director of Aquatics and Head Swim Coach With inspection passed, the deck and pool cleaned, and all furniture and equipment laid out, we are set for the season! We look forward to returning to normalcy once again after the Covid-19 pandemic. Our staff is ready to provide a safe, consistent, and memorable experience at the pool. Swim lessons will start June 7th for those signed up. We are excited and look forward to seeing everyone again this year and ready for an outstanding pool season!
