Welcome to the Unite Halls Loughborough Family University halls are at the heart of the award-winning Loughborough student experience. You will be living with students that come from all walks of life. Some of your flat mates will be studying on a different course, others will be from different parts of the world. This guide will provide you with everything you need to know about living in halls during your time in Loughborough. Make sure you read it carefully and if you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with us. We are dedicated to creating the best possible experience for each of you during your time in halls, helping you feel safe and supported throughout your time here. We want you to feel part of our halls community. Our aim is to help you reach your academic potential and to develop personal skills that will allow you to live and work independently. Kitchen appliances Each self catered kitchen is supplied with a: • Microwave • Fridge freezer • Toaster • Kettle • Cooker with oven/grill incorporated (gas or electric), some studios only have combi/microwave ovens. • Dishwasher (studios do not have dishwashers) If you find you are missing any of this equipment please contact your Hall Reception. Instructions for all of the equipment listed above can be found in your kitchen. Only British rice cookers are allowed to be used in kitchens. They must conform to European Standards and display the CE mark on the cable or plug. No cooking equipment is allowed in the study rooms. THE BANNED LIST To maintain your safety there are a number of items that are not allowed in your accommodation. This is also supported by the Stay Safe at Uni DVD which you could have watched before being allocated your room. The DVD can be viewed at www.lboro.ac.uk/campus-living/accommodation/ halls/videos/ Banned items are: • Any type of refrigeration (unless supplied by us for medical reasons). • Rice cookers (if not purchased in the UK as these hold a CE Kite Mark) • Hob infront of Induction Hob • Chip pans / oil in saucepans • Deep fat fryers • Extra Microwave • Personal heaters of any kind • Electric blankets • Extra furniture • Candles or incense sticks • Socket cube adaptor • Inside BBQ trays • Fireworks • No door wedges (including anything that wedges open a door) used in communal areas, ie., kitchens and corridors If these items are brought into the University your Hall Manager or Senior Student will ask you to remove them. If there are other items not listed but considered as dangerous, these too will be confiscated. Personal electrical items belonging to students and residents should conform to European Standards and display the CE Kite mark on the cable or plug. All equipment must be in good working order. Students should not trail cables from personal equipment across the floor as these could cause a trip hazard. Please DO NOT Use plugs that are not UK 3 pin. You must purchase an adapter to enable using your equipment in the UK. Any appliances that may be causing problems such as circuit tripping will be PAT tested and if found to be unsafe will be removed. 5

Heating and ventilation • Kitchens also contain extraction units to disperse steam and cooking odours. • En suite bathrooms contain extractor fans which can be activated in conjunction with the light switch. • Please adjust the radiators in your bedroom by the thermostatic valve (where fitted) to provide a comfortable environment. • Please do not bring in extra heaters. If these are required in the event of breakdown, your Hall Manager can provide them. • To conserve energy, avoid having windows open and leaving radiators on. IT connections - Get connected Loughborough University provides a secure connection to the wireless and wired network. Both wired and wireless services are available in halls of residence. The wireless network, eduroam is ideal for your smartphone, tablet or laptop on campus, but when in halls, we highly recommend use of the wired service HallNet for faster internet speeds and greater reliability for your PC, Laptop, Games Console etc. Ethernet cables are FREE and can be collected from your hall reception area or from the PC Clinic in the library. Waste, recycling Surface water drains and energy Surface water drains are for rain water only and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES must any other liquid (or solid) be disposed of down them. All items of value must be sent by registered post. • If lost cards are cancelled by security or by the students these cannot be re-instated if found. A new one has to be purchased. If you require your post redirecting at the end of your occupancy then self addressed sticky labels should be provided to the Hall Manager. If labels are not provided then all post is returned to sender. Royal Mail and other couriers • Letters will be delivered by the postman into relevant post boxes. • If you wish to receive parcels you will need to accept delivery yourself. Meningitis From August 2015, first-time university students up to the age of 25 will be offered a vaccination to prevent meningitis W disease. The vaccine protects against four different causes of meningitis and septicaemia. If you were not contacted through your home GP, please speak to the GP you register with to see if this can be offered to you.
