Jackie Browning
Park City High School - Class of 1970
Jackie B. Browning was born in Danville, Kentucky on
March 25, 1952, where he lived until he was five years old.
His father, Ed Browning, took employment with the Corps
of Engineers and therefore moved his family to Buckhorn,
Kentucky. While the entire family cherished the friendships
made there, Jackie’s parents were concerned with the level
of education the boys were receiving in the small mountain
community.

The Corps of Engineers had announced the construction of Barren River Reservoir,
and Mr. Browing applied for a transfer. In 1965, his family relocated to Barren County
(Even so long ago, they were impressed with Barren County Schools). In December 1956,
Jackie enrolled in 8th grade at Park City where he excelled in baseball, football, basketball,
and academics, graduating at the top of his class in 1970.

In the fall of 1970, he entered Western Kentucky University with aspirations to coach
and teach chemistry. In 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Debby Jones. While
attending WKU, Jackie began a long career at Farmers Rural Electric. From 1972 to 1988.
he held positions as Engineering Aide (filling water coolers each morning), Assistant
Staking Engineer, and Staking Engineer.

In 1982, Jackie was approached by J.B. Galloway, CEO of Farmers, and asked to
pursue a major in engineering; he re-enrolled at WKU, working full time and raising his
family. In 1983, Jackie supervised the conversion of the Cooperative’s data processing
system to an in-house system and was named System Engineer and Manager of Data
Processing. He earned his Engineer in Training Certification in 1983 and then achieved
the distinction of Professional Engineer. After 16 years of diligent work, Jackie was named
CEO of Farmers Rural Electric in November 1988 (A long way from waterboy).

Lessons learned since graduation; 1. Patience is a learned skill. 2. Delayed gratification is really
difficult. 3. It’s okay that not everyone agrees with you and some will openly disagree. 4. Love is the
antidote to selfishness. 5. Life is short, make the most of every opportunity every day. 6. People can
usually tell when you are sincere and kind. 7. Self-confidence is important but secondary to recognizing
your dependence on God’s power. 8. Study the 9 fruits of the spirit realizing they are the gift of the Holy
Spirit and the evidence that you are a true follower of Christ headed to heaven for eternity.

My hobbies and interests include family farming at 1370 Al Shirley Road in Glasgow, visiting my
sister Jill who lives in a family home in Glasgow and my brother Louis who lives in Bowling Green. Also,
visiting my daughter Natalie who is a freshman at Sullivan University in Louisville.

My greatest accomplishments include having a loving family, helping those regain their health
survive cancer and retain their dignity in the face of death. Seeing my dad through his last 3 years of life
and learning what it’s like to humble as he relinquished all human ambition and human strength and
exchanged exhausted form for a perfect eternal form.

My advice to a high school student moving forward is be optimistic and keep a positive attitude,
seek to serve others with great empathy and caring through the skills with which you have been blessed.
Be consistent and absolutely honest so you may earn the trust and respect of friends and co-workers.
Work hard and take full personal responsibility for all mistakes, being quick to apologize when in error.
Remember God is a source of all your strength and possessions and share with others less fortunate.
Stand up for the freedoms and worthy cause you believe in help and defend the weak. Celebrate the
success of others even if they are competitors. Read “The Last Lecture” written by Randy Paucsh and
Jeffery Zaslow.

I still attend high school reunions where I see my Hiseville classmates.

Tony McGuire
        Barren County High School
               Class of 1974
Anthony “Tony” McGuire is a Barren County High
School graduate, class of 1974. He lives today with his wife
Brenda [Mizell] McGuire, Temple Hill alum class of 1971,
in Murfreesboro, TN.

In October 1974, Tony began his career with McDonald’s
restaurants. He worked hard, earning recognition and
respect of his peers as he progressed through various
management positions within three different McDonald’s
franchise organizations. In 1998, Tony realized his dream
of becoming a business owner as he purchased his first
McDonald’s franchise location in Nashville, TN. His
new company, McGuire Management Group, grew to six
locations by 2013 during which time Tony received numerous awards including Ray Kroc Press
on Award (1988), Leading Edge Operator Award (2001,2005, 2009, 2011), People Award (2013),
Ronald Award (2013), and Stewardship Award (2016). He was widely recognized as one of the top
McDonald’s Franchisees in the country.

Tony led McGuire Management Group into a new era of growth beginning in 2013. He
partnered with one of his sons, mentoring him as a second-generation McDonald’s Franchisee, and
laying the foundation for a succession plan so that eventually McGuire Management Group would
become more than just his company, it would be his legacy. Together, the father-son team grew the
company to 20 total locations by 2020. In September of 2021, Tony completed the plan that he had
created seven years before as he sold his remaining interest in McGuire Management Group to his
son and retired so he could spend more time with his wife, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Besides spending time with their family, Tony and Brenda enjoy working around their farm and
spending time with their church family. They are known to this day for their work ethic and their
dedication to their “McFamily”. Their legacy continues as McGuire Management Group currently
employs approximately 1,300 employees and serves approximately 8,000,000 guests per year.

Tony believes that his greatest accomplishment is his soon to be 49-year marriage to his
high-school sweetheart. Their family includes four children, eight grandchildren, and four great-
grandchildren. His advice to today’s generation of BCHS graduates is simply to work hard, be
honest, save money, and be prepared to take on whatever challenge tomorrow has in store.

The Barren County Alumni are proud to recognize Tony and Brenda for their accomplishments.

what he could do to support them. He supported all endeavors from all areas of Barren County Schools, whether it be
attending events, reading to classes, discussing student needs with staff, or calling Frankfort to solicit more support for
Barren County Schools. Even in his retirement, he continues to contribute to the education of Barren County students,

Tim Shipley, Jr,
Barren County High School - Class of 1974
The Shipley family has long been known in Barren
County as a progressive and innovative farm family.
Timothy Shipley III has continued to maintain that
tradition for the duration of his life.
Tim, son of Frances and Tim Shipley Jr., is a
Barren County native who always knew he wanted to
be a farmer. Following in his father’s footsteps, Tim
started on the farm as soon as he could walk. As a child,
Tim could be found in the fields or on a tractor helping
his father. He went on to take over the majority of the
farm while still maintaining his studies at Park City
High School.
While attending PCHS, Tim was actively involved in 4H, FFA, and baseball. He
earned many achievements and awards across District and Regional levels in FFA and 4H.
Upon graduating in 1974, Tim was awarded State Farmer Degree, Chapter Star Farmer,
Citizens First Hall of Fame, Chapter winner in beef, swine, corn production, senior tractor
driving, and record book awards.
Tim was once quoted as stating “Start gradual- dont try to get too big too quick. Don’t
expect to start out at the same level as your parents. Start out and grow into it.” He did just
that, enhancing and operating the family’s diversified farm to owned land of 560 acres and
farming over 2,300 acres from 230 original acres. While successfully growing the family
farm, he incorporated as Shipley Farms in 1991.
During his lifelong dedication to Barren County agriculture, he was elected into
the American Angus Association, named one of the twelve Outstanding Young Tobacco
Producers in Kentucky by Phillip Morris and the University of Kentucky College of
Agricultire, and was awarded with the Conservation Farmer of the year as well as the
first annual Barren County Farmer of the Year. Tim and other farmers in the community
started the “Barren County Beef Cooperators”, co-hosted farm tours to educate Barren
County youth on agriculture, and were always willing to lend a helping hand to each other.
The partnerships with other community farmers not only advanced agriculture in Barren
County, but created lifelong friendships.
Tim has spent his life dedicated to family and farming. Tim is married to Donna
J. Shipley, has four daughters, Jaime Shipley-Bale (Thomas), Jill Shipley, Jenna Shipley
(Shaun), and Jessica Shipley, and 3 grandchildren: Peyton, Reagan, and Lincoln along with
2 sisters, Janine Shipley and Jo Shipley (Ernest). Tim’s hard work, dedication, and fairness
has earned him numerous awards and achievements throughout the years, but the most
noteworthy is that of fulfilling his childhood dream of continuing the family tradition of
becoming a farmer.

The Barren County Educational
                 Foundation, Inc.
“One person can make a difference and every person should try”. This quote,
credited to President Kennedy, expresses very succinctly the mission of the Barren
County Educational Foundation, Inc.
The Foundation was established in June, 1994 with a stated purpose to fund and
help establish worthwhile educational endeavors in conjunction with the Barren County
Board of Education. For the 2020/21 school year, the Foundation has administered
twelve scholarships, four funds, and nine grants to benefit students, whether they are
enrolled in elementary to high school, secondary education, continuing education,
or GED classes. Donors may direct giving to specific areas of need through grants,
scholarships, even non-monetary gifts. No gift is too small or unappreciated. All gifts
are tax deductible. Donations may be made anonymously. Officers and directors meet
quarterly in conjunction with the Barren County Alumni Association.
