Datkaagmin Giizis Blackberry Moon The eighth moon of Creation is Blackberry Moon, when we honour the blackberry which produces an abundance of fruit once every three years. It was one of the first plants put on Mother Earth, and its purpose is to protect the Sacred Circle of life by allowing us to recognize and understand the teachings that come from the Spirit World.

NEWS FROM OUR DEPTS: AMP Chippewas of the Thames Agricultural Management Plan COTTFN’s reserve lands are approximately 10,800 acres in size. Approximately 30-40% of the total land use is agricultural. It is important for COTTFN to better manage agricultural activities due to the proximity to Deshkan Ziibiing and the overall implications to the watershed. We are beginning with data collection and promotion of best management practices that will support the prevention of toxic and nuisance algae within the Great Lakes. Good farming practices help maintain and improve source drinking water by: 1. Reducing inputs and nutrient management planning 2. Preventing erosion and reducing the movement of nutrients and pesticides 3. Planting native plant buffers to intercept and trap contaminants Agricultural activities that could impact surrounding areas: • Improper storage of nutrients and pesticides • Excess application of nutrients and pesticides • Insufficient barriers and buffers between working fields and water courses • Fuel tank leaks and spills • Failing septic tanks If you would like to get involved or learn more about this project, please contact Annabelle Laurin, Environment Technician, at alaurin@cottfn.com 19
NEWS FROM OUR DEPTS: TRAD. KNOWLEDGE/LAND USE STUDY Community Engagement Specific to Hydro One Proposed Chatham-Kent to Lakeshore Line Project Chippewas of the Thames First Nation (COTTFN) is doing interviews related to -Kent to Lakeshore Line project proposed in COTTFN Traditional Territory. This study aims to record the places and resources (e.g., moose, fish, plants, medicines and more) that are important to COTTFN around the land in that area. To achieve this, Firelight will conduct 30 individual interviews with COTTFN members. There will be an honorarium for participants. The interviews will not be in-person, but conducted over the computer using Zoom videoconferencing software set. The information collected will then be brought together in a report that will be verified during a virtual community meeting. This report will then be used by CTFN leadership to pursue community objectives in relation to the project. Hydro One has proposed to construct a new double-circuit 230 kilovolt transmission line that is about 49 km in length in COTTFN traditional territory in Ontario. The transmission line would run from the Chatham Switching Station located approximately 8 km southeast of Chatham-Kent, to the future Lakeshore Switching Station, which will be located in Lakeshore, approximately 5 km southwest of Comber. Over the past year, Hydro One has been conducting a Class Environmental Assessment to build this new Transmission Line. Hydro One has proposed and assessed three alternative routes and have identified Route Alternative 2A as the preferred route for the proposed transmission line. Part of the line would run along an existing electrical transmission line. This project will include the construction of a high voltage 230 kilovolt Switching Station and a separate new Transformer Station, which also includes new 230 kilovolt switching equipment in the town of Lakeshore. In addition, the project will consist of the installation of station fences, entrances, concrete foundations and station drainage at the Switching and Transformer Stations, connection of transmission lines and station electrical equipment, and the installation of additional distribution lines in the town of Lakeshore. Interviews will be held in August remotely using Zoom video conferencing software. The interviewer will ask questions such as: Have you used this area for ceremony/hunting/trapping/fishing/collecting medicines/berries? What is the importance of these areas to you? What is the history of this area for you and your community? Do you have any concerns about the proposed Project? 20

I know our previous school year wasn’t ideal and we appreciated all the parents' support through the difficult school year. We also thank all the students who worked very hard during our one-on-one appointments and virtual learning. Our students lost a great amount of education during the peak of the pandemic. Our plan is to have the students return in September for full day in person classes. The staff miss the students and we know how important it is for us to see our students back in the classrooms. Staff have been working on a plan over the last few months to help provide an awesome student learning experience this upcoming school year. The staff at ARES will work our hardest to ensure that each student will receive the education they deserve. When the Board of Education trustees approve our return, we would continue to follow the COVID guideline policy for ARES. We would also require the help of each student guardian to ensure the safety of all students and staff at ARES are met. Below are some of the main areas we will focus on but not limited to. 1. Parents are to do the COVID self-checklist with their kids before being dropped off at school or boarding the school bus. (Checklist will be provided to each family before the first day of school) 2. Students to wear a mask during their bus rides to and from school 3. Temperature checks for each student will be conducted upon entering the school. 4. Students are to wear their masks in class except for eating snacks and lunch. (masks available if needed). Students will eat in classrooms. 5. Desk in each classroom would still follow the social distance guideline if possible 6. Sanitizing and cleaning would constantly occur throughout the day by the maintenance and ARES teaching staff. 22

With the help of Kingson Huff, we were able to partner with Legacy of Hope and Zipgrow. As part of their land base experience, students will be learning how to SECRETARY plant using a hydroponic system in the upcoming school year. Gertie Riley What is hydroponics? Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants without soil. Instead, you add nutrients directly into the water supply. Liquid nutrients enable the plants to spend less time getting food from the soil and more time growing. Hydroponics is also an answer to two of the world’s growing concerns: diminishing soil quality, and water scarcity. We will also have a wall tower installed in the foyer of the school. This tower will produce veggies for us throughout the school year. We also have a portable seeding unit that each grade will have the opportunity to grow veggies in their classrooms throughout the school year. Our summer student Danielle Riley is the artist behind the medicine wheel. She will continue to work on our garden beds. Miigwetch to Danielle for her continued hard work!!!! 24
