THE REGION RECORD Hadassah Florida Broward WINTER 2019 Editor: Arleen Barnes Karen Rosenson Ulm President Hadassah Florida Broward President’s Message Dear Hadassah Sisters, It’s with a sigh of relief that I say Happy New Year and greet you all for 2019. My first year as your Region president is concluded – and boy, are my arms tired! But seriously, I must tell you that despite being a Hadassah member for 28 years, I’ve been exposed to a boatload of new information about how Hadassah, as a charity and as a business, works. The efforts being made to reorganize for the 21st century, the ins and outs of a zillion departments, the focus and energy of everyone who works for this organization, both staff and volunteers, the stick-to-itiveness despite myriad bumps in the road – it’s inspiring and reassuring to see all that and know our efforts on the local level are both valued and vital to those working “above us”. We often think of Hadassah as Raising Money for our Two Hospitals which we absolutely do. That money supports our cutting-edge research, on-going treatment for people of all stripes in Israel, medical outreach around the world through training provided to other countries, emergency response to mass-casualty situations, sharing our continuous research discoveries and teaming up with medical communities abroad, all for tikkun olam, every single day. But we do so much more. Why? Because our world needs so much more. 2018 was a difficult year for humans in general. We saw more war and more suffering and more terror acts in the U.S. and around the world. Here, we saw more natural disasters, more mass shootings, and more anti-Semitic acts culminating most recently with the heart-breaking brutal murder of Jews at pray in Pittsburgh. Reports told us that there had been a 60% increase in hate acts against Jews in America when that mass shooting happened, but let’s not forget that in 2017, there had already been an 86% increase. As Hadassah women, what do we do? We use our voices to urge our lawmakers to bring Holocaust education and anti-hate curricula to American youth through the Never Again Education Act. We immediately and frequently respond to Action Alerts and write to our lawmakers whenever injustice, whether crime or health-related, can be affected through policy changes or new laws. (If you don’t already receive Action Alerts, please sign up at: http://www.hadassah.org/advocate/domestic- advocacy.html. You’ll receive periodic information and can express your opinion in as little as two mouse clicks to write to your legislators.) Most recently, we expanded our domestic advocacy efforts by opening a new Government Relations Office in Washington, DC whose job is to educate, activate and mobilize our membership, acting as a hub to amplify our grassroots engagement and maximize advocacy impact. In the words of National President Ellen Hershkin, “By educating policymakers on both sides of the aisle about the work of HMO and Hadassah’s policy priorities, the DC office will magnify our voice in Congress, as well as with federal agencies and partner organizations.” continued on next page
President’s Message, continued For all this (and more), we need YOU. And your friends. And your moms, daughters, granddaughters. And your husbands, sons, grandsons, too! The more voices we can add to improve our world, the better. The more donors and supporters we can inspire, the more good we can do. Please share your love of Hadassah with those around you and ask them to join you in supporting us. People can go to the Hadassah.org website to learn more and to donate. We have some amazing stories and some amazing women. Be proud of the work you do and whenever you can, do a little more. It’s worth it. In the past few years, Jerusalem has gone from unranked to 25th on the global list of high-tech cities, and people are flocking to this innovation hub. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat believes this transformation has only just begun and sees the Hadassah Medical Organization as playing a vital role in taking Jerusalem to the next level—attracting new talent and revolutionizing modern health care. This is a remarkable opportunity for Hadassah. HMO has completely reimagined its Round Building, the original inpatient center and core of the Hadassah Ein Kerem campus. As the population of Jerusalem grows, and people demand cutting-edge health care for all, this renovation and expansion will ensure a higher level of patient care, increase the number of patients HMO serves each year, and contribute substantially to HMO’s growth and financial stability. In July 2017, HWZOA committed to try to raise $91.2 million to renovate the Round Building. This is the first phase of Hadassah’s vision to reimagine the Ein Kerem Campus and HMO. It’s about compassion; it’s about healing; it’s about life; it’s also about a 360 degree vision in a changing world. Information and ideas are available to help support 360 Degrees of Healing, The Full Circle Campaign for HMO! For more information, contact either Sheila Magerman Steinman or Cheryl Cotler. 3

Tu B'Shvat: Emerging by Karen Wolfers Rapaport Like the trees in the depth of winter, we have the power to emerge from darkness and blossom The earliest blooming trees in Israel are awakening from a long, deep winter’s nap. The trees have spent many months in hibernation. Until now, our beloved nurturing sources of shade and breath have been absorbing water from deep beneath the ground. This G-d-given survival mechanism has sustained them up until now. But now begins a new cycle in their lives. In this moment, they will draw sustenance from their own sap in order to grow, bloom and prosper. The trees will regenerate utilizing their own resources. They will become the giving entity that they were meant to be. This time of year, the trees are beginning to bud, after they have been barren for a long period of time. They have withstood and subsisted. Sometimes barely. They are now emerging. The Torah states, "For a man is a tree of the field" (Deut. 20:19). As it is for the trees, so too it can be with us. On Tu B'Shvat, we have the privilege to see a miraculous unfolding. As the trees move from a place of paucity to a place of abundance, so too can we move from being a receiver to being a giver, for we now have ourselves. We are reconnected back to our own resources. An Event to Remember - Women of the Year, 2018 On October 28, 2018 at Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation, Florida, over 170 women, men and children gathered to honor Hadassah Florida Broward’s Women of the Year. What an amazing day it was as we honored our Wonder Women. We honored Merna Shapiro, our Florida Broward woman of the year; Arlene Novick from B’not Shalom; Randi Grossman from Coral Springs/Parkland; Penny Cukier from Kavanah; Judy Buono from L’Chayim Plantation; Harriet Churgin from Oceanside Kiryat Yam; Elaine Shneider from Pine Island Ridge; Rhonda Friedman from Tikvah; Myra Pinto from Wynmoor; and Ilene Miller and Sue Tesser from Zipporah. Our 2018 Women of the Year Our keynote speaker was Dr. Elizabeth Etkin-Kramer, a gynecologist in practice on Miami Beach for the past 25 years. Dr. Etkin-Kramer captivated the audience as she educated us about What Families Need to Know About Breast and Other Hereditary Cancers. Not only did we meet to honor our Wonder Women, but we also raised funds for breast cancer research at Hadassah Medical Organization. According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be a 50% increase in breast cancer by 2030. Education and support of the groundbreaking research happening at Hadassah Medical Organization brings us all one step closer to a cure.
