THE REGION RECORD Hadassah Florida Broward Fall 2018 Editor: Arleen Barnes Karen Rosenson Ulm President Hadassah Florida Broward President’s Message Dear Hadassah Sisters, It may feel like the middle of summer, but the new year will be here before we know it. As our hearts turn towards Rosh Hashanah and the autumn holidays, we’re drawn to the promise of new opportunities and fresh starts. From American advocacy to healing in Jerusalem and in our own bodies, now is the time to commit to the changes necessary to bring about the world we need. Raising Up Our Voices - As the High Holiday services demonstrate, we need to gather inspiration from our pasts to propel us forward. We’re still flying high after From Passion to Action Hadassah Women's Health & Advocacy Conference held in May during National Women's Health Week. It energized hundreds of attendees around Hadassah's efforts to advance support for Israel, health and women's health equity. We were a force with 250 Hadassah members and Associates from 25 states who visited more than 80 congressional offices during our recent Day on the Hill in Washington DC, securing support for key legislation on women's health equity, Holocaust education, gun safety and more. We carry this passion into the new year and commit together to more action. Karen Ulm, Florida Broward President (L) led a group including Linda Merna Shapiro, National VP (L) Goldstein, Florida Greater with Rep. Ted Deutsch and Miami President Lin Pomerantz, Florida Central (standing) to meet with President, (far R) Sen. Bill Nelson Vote - With advocacy in mind, we should each commit to vote in the upcoming elections. No matter where we stand, we must each stand up in our democratic process. And just as we gather with our families and loved ones to start the new year, we should text or call our daughters and granddaughters to remind them to vote as well. Florida’s primary was on August 28th, but the final election day is Tuesday, November 6th. HMO - Hadassah is the founder of Israel’s modern health-care system and has been tireless in maintaining the highest standards for more than 100 years. The Full Circle Campaign to reimagine and renovate the iconic Round Building will significantly advance the services in its outpatient surgery, maternity, oncology, and dermatology departments. To complete the renovation and expansion of the Round Building—so vital to health care in Israel and worldwide—Hadassah needs to raise $91.2 million by 2021. You can learn more and give your support at www.hadassah.org/360degrees. Feeding Our Bodies, Along with Our Souls - The High Holidays are a time of resolutions – who among us hasn’t resolved to eat more healthy food? Hadassah has also rolled out many new health-focused programs, including topics like Alzheimer’s, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetes. Learn more at www.hadassah.org/research. Whether we’re uniting in America or Israel, it’s always a good time to bring in women who are new to Hadassah. Do you have a friend, neighbor, or relative who would be interested in what’s happening in our community? Who’s that sitting near you in shul? Share your magazine. Bring her to the next event. Let’s make her feel welcome. Warmly, Karen

My Tour of Hadassah Hospital, Ein Kerem – July 19, 2018 Submitted by: Rhonda Friedman, Florida Broward Co-VP PRAZE (Programming, Advocacy, Zionism, Education) A couple of months before my visit to Israel, I arranged a private tour of Hadassah Hospital, Ein Kerem. I specifically wanted to visit the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower for which we worked so hard to raise funds to complete. Three friends that had never toured the hospital accompanied me on the tour. Our guide, Nicole, was warm and friendly in addition to bringing us extensive knowledge of the Hadassah Ein Kerem campus. She gave us a 3-hour tour, which included the small but beautiful Hadassah Museum, followed by a tour of the “Tower”. Here, accompanied by a Volunteer Clown, we visited pediatric patients. There, I was allowed to personally distribute the gifts I brought from the USA for them. What a special and joyous gift for me to have the honor to bring smiles to some of the young faces of all backgrounds that we serve. Nicole showed us the state-of-the-art Emergency facility, currently under much needed expansion and renovation. The emergency area includes a secure treatment room, in which a patient may be treated under conditions of full security. For example, former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was brought and treated there after his stroke. We were given a detailed explanation of each and every beautiful Chagall stained glass window in the Chapel. To conclude, it was very rewarding to see our amazing facility that is changing lives in Israel and all over the world! It inspires me to keep working to raise more money for Hadassah, and by the way, the parking situation is horrendous (we need to add lots more floors to the parking garage)! The Jerusalem Gateway Project is transforming the city into an entrepreneurial business center. In the past few years, Jerusalem has gone from unranked to 25th on the global list of high-tech cities, and people are flocking to this innovation hub. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat believes this transformation has only just begun and sees the Hadassah Medical Organization as playing a vital role in taking Jerusalem to the next level—attracting new talent and revolutionizing modern health care. This is a remarkable opportunity for Hadassah. HMO has completely reimagined its Round Building, the original inpatient center and core of the Hadassah Ein Kerem campus. As the population of Jerusalem grows, and people demand cutting- edge health care for all, this renovation and expansion will ensure a higher level of patient care, increase the number of patients HMO serves each year, and contribute substantially to HMO’s growth and financial stability. In July 2017, HWZOA committed to try to raise $91.2 million to renovate the Round Building. This is the first phase of Hadassah’s vision to reimagine the Ein Kerem Campus and HMO. It’s about compassion; it’s about healing; it’s about life; it’s also about a 360 degree vision in a changing world. Information and ideas are available to help support 360 Degrees of Healing, The Full Circle Campaign for HMO! For more information, contact either Sheila Magerman Steinman or Cheryl Cotler. 4
