CULTURE THE OSOYOOS INDIAN BAND The Osoyoos Indian Band, one of seven member bands in the Okanagan Nation, has a proud and independent history in the Osoyoos and Oliver area. The band continues to play an integral role in the community, adding not only an invaluable richness of heritage, culture and arts but also economic influence, operating several successful businesses. ORIGIN OF OSOYOOS The origin of the name Osoyoos was the word sẁiẁs (pronounced “soo-yoos”) mean- ing “narrowing of the waters” in the local Okanagan language (Syilx’tsn). The “O-” prefix is not indigenous in origin and was attached by settler-promoters wanting to harmonize the name with other place names beginning with O in the Okanagan region (Ol- iver, Omak, Oroville, Okanogan). The natural ford at Osoyoos Lake, used as an ancient crossing place and a significant fishing spot for the Syilx people, is now bridged by High- way 3.

More gentle cycle tours can be found on Black Sage Road. Osoyoos Visitors Guide 2019 Discover walks, talks and trails We’re a region that is rich in history and culture and it’s easy to share in that understanding because we have trails and walkways everywhere, each leading to a different part of our living and historical environment. The Irrigation canal walkway can be accessed from the Osoyoos Visitor Centre and travels 5.1 kilometres (3.1 miles) along the now-abandoned waterway that once provided water to the orchards and wineries in the area. The recently restored Osoyoos Oxbows trail takes in the wetland reserve at the north end of Osoyoos Lake and the 5 km (3 mi.) return trip trail is an easy walk, providing a close up view of one of Osoyoos’ only remaining wetlands.
