Welcome to Università Cattolica! Arriving in a new place can be daunting, especially when there are bureaucratic procedures to be followed before you can start living the city. This guide will help you get through your first days in Milan by explaining the administrative steps to be taken. It will also give you information about how to organize your university time and other useful information about the city so that you can enjoy your free time too. Opening a bank account . Registering for the Italian health service How can I find accommodation in Milan? There are various sites and offices that offer students rental accommodation (see below). The cost of living in Milan is estimated at around E 700-900 per month: this would cover average expenditure for food, accommodation, transportation and leisure activities. You can register for your program at the Specializing Master’s Programs Office at 28/30 Via Carducci, Milan (Tel: +39 02 7234 3860). You will need to present the following: . Enrollment form . Original transcript and Dichiarazione di valore (document issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate certifying your qualifications) . Photocopy of your passport . 2 passport-sized photos . Payment receipt for first instalment of tuition fees 5
What is a Codice Fiscale? You will need to apply for an Italian tax number or codice fiscale that you can carry out the various bureaucratic procedures when you come to live in Italy. You will need it to apply for your permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno) and to open a bank account. Information about how to obtain a tax number is available online. Info http://www1.agenziaentrate.gov.it/inglese/ What is a Permesso di Soggiorno? A Permesso di Soggiorno is a permit of stay which is a legal requirement for anyone coming to live in Italy. As a student, your permit of stay will be for purposes of study. It will also allow you to work for up to 20 hours a week. If you have specific documentation approved by Università Cattolica it may be possible to register for a university course other than the one for which the permit of study was originally issued. You may also apply for an extension of your permesso di soggiorno for purposes of employment. How do I apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay)? a) Go to any post office and ask for a Busta Gialla - an envelope containing forms and a list of documentation to be prepared for the application. b) The Specializing Master’s Programs Office can assist in filling in the forms and checking the documents to be presented with the forms. c) You will need your tax number (see instructions above). d) Take your Busta Gialla to the Post Office, with completed forms and photocopies of the following documentation: . Program admission letter . Health insurance policy . Passport . How do I open a bank account? You will need to open a bank account so that you can manage scholarship funds, income from any employment and funds sent from your home country. Special terms and conditions for students are available from Intesa Sanpaolo. Go to a branch of this bank with the following documentation: . A photocopy of your Codice Fiscale card (Italian tax number); . A photocopy of your passport; . A photocopy of the receipt of your application for a Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay); . Letter of registration for your Specializing Master’s Program Information www.intesasanpaolo.com/giovani How do I register with the Italian National Health Service? EU students European citizens holding a national health card have automatic access to the Italian National Health Service. Just go to a local health service office (ASL - Azienda Sanitaria Locale) to choose a general practitioner (medico di famiglia). No EU students Citizens from countries outside the EU wishing to register with the Italian Health Service need to apply for temporary voluntary registration at a local health service office (ASL - Azienda Sanitaria Locale). You should go to the scelta e revoca counter to do this, with the following documentation: . Certificate of enrollment at Università Cattolica . Your passport; . Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay). This office will not accept the application receipt (you will need the original) . Your Codice Fiscale card (Italian tax number) . Free time in Milan What is the final step to get my Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay)? After you apply for your Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay) you will receive a text message with an appointment to go to a police station. This will also appear online, accessible with your personal code that you are given when you apply for your permit. You will have to go either to the Central Police Station (Questura di Milano) or a local police station close to your home (Uffico di Polizia, or Commissariato). Your permesso di soggiorno card will be issued immediately. How can I find out about the status of my Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay) application? You can track the progress of your application for a permesso di soggiorno at the following site: questure.poliziadistato.it/stranieri What about travelling in Italy and within the EU with my study Visa? A study visa allows students to travel throughout Italy and to countries within the Schengen Area, so long as your individual visa conditions allow this. Your Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay) will allow you to travel to all countries within the Schengen Area*. * Countries which are party to the Schengen area: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. 8
How to register your residential address? International students living in Italy for more than three months have to register their address with the Local Government Authority. You will be asked for the following documentation for registration: Eu Students . Cerificate of registration on your Specializing Master’s Program . Health insurance policy . Proof of personal financial means Non EU Students . Passport . Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay) or receipt for your application of your Permit of Stay Who do I contact? Ask for a Domanda di rilascio della tessera elettronica form at any of the “ATM Point” counters at the following metro stations: Duomo, Cadorna, Stazione Centrale, Loreto and Romolo. You will be given a receipt when you submit your form and a date when you should go back and pick up your pass (2-3 weeks). What you need to take with you when you apply for a travel card: . Your Codice Fiscale card (Italian tax number) . Your passport or other ID . A passport -sized photo with your full name on the back . Proof that you have registered for your Specializing Master’s Program (payment receipt, student ID, etc.) Costs: Up to 26 years old: e 10 (travelcard) plus e 22 per month (annual pass: e 220) Over 26 years old: e 10 (travelcard) plus e 35 per month (annual pass: e 330) Information www.atm.it/en 9
How to get a mobile phone contract? Italy has four mobile phone networks (Tim, Vodafone, Wind and 3), all offering both contracts and pay-as-you-go cards and all with outlets close to Università Cattolica. Tim & Vodafone are generally considered to offer better coverage and network reliability (which can be an issue outside the city) whereas Wind and 3 are the cheaper alternatives. Pay-as-you-go may be a good short-term solution upon arrival in Italy since you will usually be asked to provide an Italian bank account number to get a contract, although it may also be possible to use your credit card. You will in all cases be asked to provide your Codice Fiscale card (Italian tax number). Italian language courses are available at Università Cattolia - just check the UCSC International website for start dates and tuition fees. What can I do in my free time? You won’t get bored in Milan. Theatre and art museum tickets can be purchased at reduced prices using the Università Cattolica discount. If singing is your thing then you can join the University choir, Noted’inChiosto (cloister music). Sports facilities are available around the city at centres managed by CUS, the national sports association for university students. Just pass by the CUS information point on the main campus in Largo Gemelli. Then there is the famous aperitivo Milanese. Bars in areas like Corso Como, Porta Ticinese and the Navigli (canal area) offer drinks at a fixed price which includes a buffet. Prices are usually around 8 to 10 euros. 2015 is the year that Milan will behost city for Expo, with events running from May to October. Don’t miss this opportunity to see exhibits from all over the world on the theme of “Feeding the Plant - Energy for Life”. At the end of your Specializing Master’s Program Will my degree be legally recognized in my home country? To be sure that your Specializing Master’s certificate is valid internationally you will have to get it certified by the Prefecture of Milan before you leave Italy. Take your certificate to the offices of the Prefecture at 4 Via Servio Tullio. Note: If your home country is not party to the Hague Convention* you have to go to the Prefettura first (see above), and then to the Consulate or Embassy of your country. Note: From Aug 4, 2014 you need to register online to get an appointment for the validation. A Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of Stay) may not be used or renewed for enrolling on any program of study other than that for which your visa was issued, unless it is for another university course that is further study of the completed program at a higher level. 12

Sports and other activities Healthcare and Counselling The university healthcare service provides nurses and doctors for general and specialist appointments which can be booked by anyone in possession of a student card. The service offices are on the first floor of the Dominicanum Building in the Largo Gemelli site and they are open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information educatt.unicatt.it Telephone for appointment: 02.7234.2217 Library The Library offers study areas and provides material for reference only and tools to find material on the online catalogue. The Central Library Room is the real heart of the library which also houses Bibliopoint, the central information point for all library services: . The Central Library Room also provides: . Internet and intranet stations to search for materials, e-journals, search databases, national and international online catalogues and webpages . Self-service photocopy facilities which can be used with pre-paid cards available from the Photocopy Lab Central Library Room, Ground floor, Gregorianum Building Hours: Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (book requests until 6 p.m.) and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (book requests until 12 noon) Information biblioteche.unicatt.it/milano Blackboard Università Cattolica uses Blackboard as its platform for managing education online. It is not just a download area but it is also an online interactive space where students and teachers can work together. To access Blackboard click on ‘percorso studenti’. Important communications and university services iCatt is a free application where you can consult information about your courses, communications from your teaching staff and a record of the exams you have taken. Language Courses Università Cattolica organises Italian language courses for speakers of other languages. Check the language course in the Living in Milan section for information about dates and enrolment fees. Self-service Restaurant Service Università Cattolica provides a self-service restaurant service for students. To be able to use the facility simply register on myeducatt.unicatt.it and load your university card with € 5.50 at the pre- pay points in 9 Via Necchi. You can always check online to see how much credit you have on your card. Internships and Placement The Internship and Placement Service provides a point of contact between students and companies, through promotion, activation and monitoring internships. The service offers: . Online access to internship and work ads . A “Job Bank” - a databank of student information which companies recruiting professionals can access . An internship and placement counter with information about career prospects, tools and channels for job searches, job vacancies, internships, study grants and companies.
