INTRODUCTION BY JACOB MØLBJERG TOF JENSEN This guide is about some of my favorite places and restaurants in my city and Denmark. I tried to make it as manageable as possible, by dividing the guide into different cities, which all are listed in the table of contents. In the end, there is a map that shows where everything is located. Furthermore, is there a list of all the addresses. If you want to know more about Denmark, you can visit the following web pages (on VisitDenmark, it is possible to change the language to France! this is done in the bottom of the page) https://www.visitdenmark.dk/ https://denmark.dk/ https://www.toppenafdanmark.dk/ (All the content is inspired and partly quoted by these pages) I hope you will find this interesting and if you have any questions, anything you would like to know or just want to follow me, don’t hesitate to add me on one of following platforms. FREDERIKSHAVN THE PALM BEACH In Frederikshavn, we have a beach called Palm Beach, and the unique thing about this beach is that it is the only beach with palm trees in Denmark. There are about 100 palm trees on the beach from May to September. There are volleyball courts, pentaquin lanes, and a barbecue area on the beach, and there is free use of the sun loungers. There is a famous ice cream shop at Palmestranden this ice cream shop is the best in the hole town and is a visit worth. The Palm Beach is defiantly a must-see if you are visiting Frederikshavn in the summer times. 5
PIKKERBAKKEN Frederikshavn has gained a new attraction with a newly constructed observation platform with a height of 71 meters. The platform also extends from the top of the hill at Pikkerbakken to get a freer and open view of the city. The platform provides a unique view of the town, harbor, the islands of Hirsholmene, Sæby, and Skagen. You can drive by car to Pikkerbakken, but it is also a beautiful hike from Møllehuset restaurant, which is also the start of an MTB track to the top. Pikkerbakken is also a beautiful place to visit during the dark hours. 6
HIRSHOLMENE The island previously mentioned is called Hirsholmene, and it lies about 7 km northeast of Frederikshavn. On the backside of Hirsholmene, there is a beach called Præstebugten. It is a small sandy beach with warm shallow waters. With a little luck, you can spot seals there from time to time. Furthermore, birds are one of the trademarks of Hirsholmene, and in the summertime and when they breed, they can be slightly intimidating if you go outside the assigned path, so stay on track. If you want to visit the island, there is a boat called seadog. In the summertime, the boat sails nearly every day and it possible to book a ticket at http://www.seadog.dk If you are so lucky that your host family has a boat themselves that could also be an opportunity to visit the island. The island has a lighthouse, and sometime during the summer, it is open to the public. So, if you visit remember to go there 7
COST MUSEUM BANGSBO FORT Bangsbo Fort is located immediately south of Pikkerbakken. The area is located in approximately 80 m height. The fort is a remain of the second world and is today still in use for military purposes. The artillery bunkers and canons are today only to display for tourists and are not used by the military. The fort was built by the Germans during World War 2 and was reinforced in 1944 with four 15 cm canons from the Royal Danish artillery ship Niels Juel. It is possible to visit the exhibition bunkers and experience interactive communication. There are both cinemas and traditional museum communication. To gain access to the museum, you have to pay an entrance fee, but if you only want to visit the bunker and the canons, it is for free. 8
SCANDIC - THE REEF Scandic The Reef offers a 1500-sqm Caribbean aquapark where both kids and adults can have a great time. There are slides, a waterfall, and an outdoor pool, and most of all, you can enjoy this in a balmy, tropical heat. Scandic houses a total of 5 pools, all at 29°C, and air temperature in the aquapark at 32°C; furthermore, there are 5 whirlpools heated to 37°C and hot steam bath. Outside you’ll find the sun deck with its heated outdoor pool with a fountain, as well as 1 outdoor whirlpool and 2 saunas. 9
STENA LINE AND SWEEDEN Travel to Gothenburg Sweden for a day trip with one of the Stena Line ferries. When the boat arrives in Gothenburg, it will be possible to go shopping much cheaper than in Denmark. Also, enjoy other attractions and good food in a relaxing atmosphere. From the ferry terminal in Gothenburg, there is only a 10-minute walk to the city center. It is also possible to take the train or a bus which further away. Sometimes it is possible to buy a ticket for the ferry for as little as 10€, but it usually is around 30€. 10
SÆBY GENERAL ABOUT SÆBY The old market town of Sæby offers an idyllic setting for a memorable vacation/stay. On the beaches, you have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sun, the water, and each other’s company in the beautiful Danish nature. Take a stroll down the seafront promenade, soak in the beautiful sights, and feel the distinctive atmosphere that surrounds the town of Sæby. When you visit Sæby, is it always a good idea to go to the harbor and see The Lady from the Sea. She symbolizes the start and the end, the past and the present. The small cultural gem has many qualities; you can, for instance, visit the charming boutiques, indulge in a seafood meal at one of the local restaurants, expand your knowledge at fascinating museums, and much more. In Sæby there is a pretty big forest, this is an excellent place to bring your family for a walk, especially in the summertime. The name of the forest is ‘Sæbygård Skov’. If you follow the path from ‘Sæbygård skov’ you will arrive at ‘Gedebjerget’. ‘Gedebjerget’ is located at a height of 85 meters above ‘Sæbygård Slot.’ When you are on top of the mountain, you can see the Island of Læsø. The walk to ‘Gedebjerget’ is about 4.5 km. 11
SÆBY BEACH PROMENADE AT NORDSTRAND Sæby is the only town in the region that has a proper beach promenade. It starts at the bridge over the stream at Sæby Marina. It stretches several km north along the beach of Nordstrand, past Sæby Søbad holiday resort to the end at Hedebo Strandcamping (beach camping). The beach promenade makes it easy to combine a day at the beach with a stroll in Sæby’s old part of town for lunch or an ice cream at the marina. The beach of Sæby is an excellent place to look for exciting seashells and perhaps even amber. Especially after a storm or a windy night, it is easy to find some big and beautiful chunks of amber on the beach. The old town of Sæby looks a bit like the town of Skagen with the yellow buildings and red-tiled roof but with its own charm 12
SKAGEN SKAGEN MUSEUM Skagen’s museum is an internationally reputable museum dedicated to the painters of Skagen. The museum houses painters such as Krøyer, Anna & Michael Ancher, Tuxen, and others, who settled in Skagen in the 19th century. Today Skagen’s Museum contains around 1900 sculptures, drawings, and paintings mainly made by artists who visited Skagen in the period from 1870-1930. Although you might not be particularly interested in art, you should not miss a visit to this museum, when you are in Skagen. Not only will you find world-class art, but also the atmosphere of Skagen, which has made it the city that it is today. “Skagensmalerne” is the name of the artist colony, who settled in Skagen in the 1870s to portray life in Skagen. The rough living conditions of the fishermen and the grand nature with the unique light, which makes both Skagen and North Jutland a popular destination. The painters brought their brushes and easel into nature and painted what they saw. The style, also called realism, influenced all of Europe in this period and has helped with the steady flow of artists. That's also why we today speak of the painters of Skagen as an artist colony. 13
GRENEN For visitors of North Jutland, a visit to Skagen and Grenen, the northernmost point of Jutland, is an absolute must. Denmark’s northernmost point, Grenen, hosts a unique natural phenomenon. Here, two seas meet, namely the Skagerrak and the Kattegat; and the collision of the waves is visible to the naked eye. Due to the powerful and extremely dangerous currents, bathing is strictly prohibited. In addition to Grenen, another attraction is found roughly 4 km to the south-east of the center of Skagen, The Sandburied Church; it will be mentioned later on. Not to forget Skagen itself, as the center of the town is widely renowned for its vibrant tourist life. But indeed, the Skagen town is also a town with an exciting history. For instance, it housed and lent its name to a group of Danish painters working in and around Skagen around 1900ies and famous for their colorful open-air paintings, namely the Skagen painters. 14
RÅBJERG MILE Between Skagen and Frederikshavn, there is a big pile of sand. The sandpile was formed at the west coast (Råbjerg Stene) in the 16th century during the great sand migration. The dune consists of a 1000-m long and 1000-m wide mound containing approximately 4 million m3 of sand with its highest point some 40 m above sea level. The pile continues to migrate east-northeast towards Kattegat at a rate of more than 15 m a year. This magnificent scenery makes an excellent destination for an excursion. it almost looks like a desert Råbjerg Mile can be reached with a car from Kandestedvej and on a bike from Vestkyststien (The west coast route). Råbjerg Stene can also be reached by footpath from Råbjerg Kirke (Church). 15
THE SANDBURIED CHURCH The church, which bears the name of Sct. Laurentii. Saint Laurence, the seafarer's guardian saint, was probably built in the second half of the 14th century and was, at that time, the largest church in the region of Vendsyssel. The sand migration, as mentioned earlier, began in the 16th century and reached the church at the end of the 18th century. The congregation had to dig their way into the church when they wanted to attend services. The struggle against the sand continued until 1795, when the church was closed by royal decree. Today only the tower of the ancient church is visible. 16
OTHER GOOD PLACES IN DENMARK LEGOLAND The original Legoland opened the doors in 1968 in Billund. The theme park built entirely of LEGO. Located near Billund Airport, LEGOLAND’s favorite attractions include the mini models of famous buildings and sites from around the world. LEGOLAND has itself spread across the globe, and you can now visit LEGOLANDs in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. But the original at LEGO’s home still draws millions of visitors each year. The name ‘LEGO’ is an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt,” meaning “play well.” The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. The company has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder. In the beginning, the LEGO company only made wooden toys, and the revenue stream wasn’t satisfying. By the 1940ties, LEGO started making plastic bricks you could put together, and from there, it went big. Visit www.legoland.dk for further information. 17
RUBJERG KNUDE LIGHT HOUSE Rubjerg Knude Fyr is one of North Jutland’s major tourist attractions. Right on the edge of the impressive Rubjerg Knude sand dune stands the lighthouse. From the top of the tower, you will find one of the most remarkable views of the North Sea and Vendsyssel. But the lighthouse is close to falling into the sea. The untamed nature and autumn storms eat the cliff which the building is standing on, and the lighthouse has gradually moved dangerously close to the edge (2019). In 2019 it was decided to try to move the lighthouse. The project was given to a local builder. In August 2019, preparations began for what would turn out to be a significant and quite unique event. For eight weeks, the buildering team prepared for the move. They dug and moved tons of sand. They dug out the foundation of the lighthouse and reinforced it with several tons of iron and concrete. They moved sand away from the dunes in order to put rails down where the lighthouse would roll inland. The team succeeded in moving Rubjerg Knude Fyr, which now has maybe 30 more years to live. 18
NORDSØEN OCEANARIUM Explore one of the biggest attractions in North Jutland, the Nordsøen Oceanarium in Hirtshals. Meet the sunfish in the biggest aquarium in Northern Europe, where you can find fun and a lot of different activities for the whole family. At the North Sea Oceanarium, you can experience Northern Europe’s single largest aquarium tank. Explore more than 7,000 fish and other sea creatures, divided into 75 aquariums. The aquarium covers more than 10,000 square meters and 5,000 square meters of outdoor area. The 4.5- million-liter seawater aquarium tank is a unique experience in itself as thousands of fish and sea creatures swim by you. 19
FÅRUP SOMMERLAND In the middle of the forest, you find the oldest amusement park in Denmark - Fårup Sommerland. Fårup Sommerland is one of Denmark’s biggest tourist attractions, and the park is full of crazy rides. You will find everything from wild roller to Denmark’s biggest outdoor aquapark. There are more than 60 different rides - and when the entry fee has been paid, you have free access to all of the attractions and the aquapark. In the summertime, it can be very crowded, so consider a weekday for maximum exploitation. The entrance fee is quite expensive, but it is all the money worth! 20
THE OLD TOWN OF AARHUS ‘Den Gamle By’ (The Old Town) is a perfectly unique attraction in Aarhus and the opportunity to go on a fascinating journey back in history. The museum is awarded the maximum three stars in the Michelin Travel Guide. You can meet people dressed, working, and behaving just like they did in the olden days. They are cooking food, chopping wood, sewing, and needling, or attending to customers in the shops. Feel free to stop for a chat with them; perhaps they will tell you about life in the old-time Denmark. Go for a ride in the horse-drawn carriage, or have a pint in the beer cellar, and enjoy a cup of coffee with cake in the tea garden. The old town is divided into three periods; life before the 1900s, life from the 1900s to the end of 1920ties, and the last period the welfare of 1970ties. 21
AROS AARHUS ART MUSEUM ARoS is one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe. And each year, ARoS has about one million visitors, making it the most frequented art museum in Scandinavia. On the roof of ARoS, you can also visit The Rainbow Panorama. The Rainbow Panorama on the roof of ARoS is a spectacular artwork made of the Danish/Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
