President’s Message Happy Valentine’s Day! Last October I inherited the mother of my rough blue merle collie when her owner passed away suddenly. “Gigi” is a very sweet little girl, an AKC champion, who came from a large kennel in North Carolina. While all the dogs there were well cared for something went wrong. A few of them tested positive for heartworm—Gigi included. Thankfully Gigi was not coughing or having any difficulty breathing. The echocardiogram did not indicate severe heart damage and there were no microfilaria (baby worms) in her bloodstream. However, Gerrie Oliver she also tested positive for whipworms and hookworms. Since Gigi was also a bit anemic, treatment for those worms began immediately and aggressively and she was put on the regular monthly dosage of Interceptor Plus to keep things under control. (I’ve learned that the monthly treatments will prevent them from contracting heartworm but will not cure it once it is established. This simply prevented any new infections.) Once she was stabilized, the regimen for actual heartworm treatment began early in November. It started by giving Gigi a month-long dosage of Doxycline to rid her system of any bacteria that could interfere with treatment. Trouble with that was that the Doxy made her very nauseous. She vomited frequently and refused all food, even home-cooked meals and deli Ramapo Kennel Club meats. OTC stomach antacids did no good. Since Doxy must be given with food, Officers it really complicated things. Ultrasounds and more blood tests insured it wasn’t President anything more serious. Eventually stopped the Doxycyline altogether and she Gerrie Oliver was put on anti-nausea and appetite stimulants Mirtazapine, Ondansetron and olivergerrie@gmail.com Entyce to get her appetite back on track. Happily with these meds the vomiting Vice President stopped and she began eating again. Jeffrey David Ball According to the original plan, once the Doxycyline treatments were complete, Gigi was to be given a month without meds to allow her system to rest. Then Treasurer the real heartworm killers would be administered in three doses over one Ruth Henningsen month’s time. The first intravenous injection must be administered at the Recording Secretary Kristin Pierson veterinarian hospital so she can be carefully monitored throughout the day. The second dose is given one month later. The third dose is given the very next Corresponding Secretary Tilly Grassa day. Although not as dangerous as they used to be, I understand the injections tgcreative@aol.com are painful so more meds are given to make her more comfortable. Another Board of Directors heartworm test is done the following month to confirm success. 2021 However, our story is not ended. Gigi’s doctor felt that the interrupted Cindy Pierson Doxycyline program was insufficient and it was necessary to start over again. Denis Johnson Sue Chandler So, January 13th was our new “Day 1” with another month-long round of antibiotic treatment. Fortunately, a lower dose is deemed adequate and more 2022 tolerable as long as I keep her on the Ondansetron, too. Gigi will be able to Elaine Barone “rest” from February 13th to March 13th when the real heartworm injections Lorraine Fennemore Tim Dewar begin. I think it is ironic that she and I will enjoy a quiet Valentine’s Day. Let’s keep our dog’s hearts healthy. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound AKC Delegate of cure.
