I feel so grateful and exhilarated to begin my teaching journey at Irymple South Primary School. The past four years at La Trobe have been challenging, rewarding and memorable. I have been able to grow as an individual and teacher throughout my time at university. La Trobe has helped me become more confident in my ability to teach and support students in their learning journey. The staff and students at Mildura go above and beyond to support each other, and I could not imagine completing my degree at any other university. Abbey Carpenter Bachelor of Education (Primary) I began my Graduate Nurse Year at Mildura Base Public Hospital in 2020. It was during this time also that we were faced with the global pandemic and the need and value for nurses increased dramatically. After completing my Graduate Nurse Program, I felt overwhelmed with pride and appreciation for my fellow nurses, as well as all other health professionals that I worked with. I have now secured a permanent position in our hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, and I am absolutely in love with my career. I aspire to eventually complete further study and specialise in the critical care areas of the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department. Conci Malcotti Bachelor of Nursing My role at Sunraysia Community Health Services is Accounting Officer. My work placement here during uni was great and I was offered continuous work afterwards. It feels great to be able to use the skills and knowledge that I learned during my three years at La Trobe in a work environment. I really enjoy working with a wonderful team and organisation, it is very rewarding assisting our community. Samuel Levey Bachelor of Business (Accounting) 6 Graduation Mildura 2020/21

Ceremonial tradition Academic regalia Universities are heirs to traditions going back eight centuries. The colourful robes worn by today’s graduands originate from the everyday dress of scholars and teachers in the Middle Ages. The traditions and colours can vary between institutions, which is why you may notice some differences in style among the academic procession. For universities in the English-speaking world, there are normally three separate garments – the gown, the hood, and the cap. Bachelors and Masters wear the hard cap known as the trencher, or mortarboard. Doctors wear a soft velvet cap with a tassel of the colour appropriate to their discipline. BACHELOR DEGREE MASTER DEGREE DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DIPLOMA GRADUATE CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATE La Trobe’s discipline colours Indigenous graduands Graduands of Indigenous descent may choose to wear a stole in addition to their academic regalia. Donate to La Trobe At La Trobe we have a unique ability to identify potential where others may not see it, to shine a light on excellence that would otherwise remain hidden. We continue to pioneer new and innovative areas of research, provide life-changing scholarships and foster state-of-the-art learning environments across Melbourne’s north and in regional Victoria. We know exactly how we can make the difference in the world. But we can’t do it alone. We need people like you to partner with us in the work that we do, each and every day. Perhaps you think the word philanthropist doesn’t apply to you. But it simply means giving a gift that is meaningful to you and makes the difference you want to make. Acknowledgement of Country La Trobe University acknowledges that our campuses are located on the lands of many Traditional Custodians in Victoria and New South Wales. We recognise their ongoing connection to the land and value their unique contribution to the University and wider Australian society. La Trobe University is committed to providing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, both as individuals and communities, through teaching and learning, research and community partnerships across all our campuses. The wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax) is one of the world’s largest, and the Wurundjeri people – Traditional Owners of the land where our Melbourne campuses are located – know the wedge-tailed eagle as Bunjil, the creator spirit of the Kulin Nations. There is a special synergy between Bunjil and the La Trobe University logo of an eagle. The symbolism and significance for both La Trobe and for Aboriginal people challenges us all to gamagoen yarrbat – to soar. Graduation Mildura 2020/21 19
