Commencement Speakers MICHELLE WILLIAMS COMBS, PA-C Michelle Combs graduated from Alderson Broaddus University in 1973. She grew up in West Virginia with her family which included three younger sisters. She now lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her first PA position was with the AB PA program serving as their 2021 Graduate Commencement educational coordinator while working in Philippi and Charleston, West Virginia at the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). After she and her husband Glen were married, they moved to San Francisco where they worked in an Internal Medicine practice. She has worked in several different positions as a PA including a Health Department in Lexington, Kentucky during the HIV/AIDS pandemic; Planned Parenthood, and for more than 10 years in Primary Care. Most recently, she worked in Hematology/Oncology for 14 years. She is now retired after 48 years as a practicing PA. GLEN E. COMBS, M.A., PA Glen Combs graduated from Alderson Broaddus University in 1973. As a physician associate (PA), Mr. Combs has had an illustrious career as an educator, national leader and as a practicing clinician in obstetrics/ gynecology, emergency medicine, family medicine and psychiatry. He has chaired two university departments of PA studies; first at the University of Kentucky, 1978 to 1989 and at Wake Forest School of Medicine, 1989 to 2004. He advanced the Wake program from certificate to a Master’s degree program. He served as president of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) on two occasions, 1985 to 1986 and 2000 to 2001. He has served on the North Carolina Academy of PAs board of directors. As a national advocate for the PA profession, he has testified on PA matters to the US Congress as well as numerous state legislatures early in his career when there was a need to achieve enabling legislation to allow PAs to practice as early as 1976. He lobbied the Department of Defense promoting commissioning of Navy PAs in active service. He has interacted with the leadership of the American Medical Association (AMA) and American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP). He has served as the AAPA representative to the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for nine years and was awarded a distinguished service award. He served as the first treasurer of the Physician Assistant History (PAHx) Society, 2002 to 2008. Providing quality health care is his goal now and for the future.
