GM St. Catharines Employee Newsletter 3 GM ST. CATHARINES SPRING WILDLIFE HABITAT UPDATE Worldwide, GM manages 5,000 acres of land for wildlife habitats at 71 GM manufacturing sites in 14 countries. GM has a long-term commitment to managing quality habitat for wildlife, conservation education and community outreach initiatives. Whether a small pollinator garden, a forest or a wetland, the company is using its land, resources and partnerships to steer actions that collectively contribute to improving the environment. Update: South Poplar Woodlot Restoration The historical Cast Iron Foundry excess material storage area, remediated as a poplar tree plantation, has been a restoration focus for the past two years. Last World Environment Day (June 5, 2017), 2,320 new trees were Ecosystem Restoration student volunteers on Field Day pruning trees interplanted to promote a healthier and more diverse ecosystem. In October, a survey was completed and the survival rate was assessed at 80.6 % for the new saplings. This is deemed quite successful given the site history, weather conditions, and the hand planting technique used. Another assessment will be conducted in the fall of 2018. On March 12, 2018, the Niagara College Ecosystem Restoration Post-Grad student group was onsite for a field day in which a total of 16 student volunteers pruned more of GM’s poplar trees and removed the old irrigation tubing. 2018 New Projects – Green Roof Initiative GM St. Catharines is currently working with Niagara College’s Landscape Technician Program’s “Architectural Green Spaces” course on a green roof Ecosystem Restoration student volunteers on Field Day – group photo design that could be implemented on the enclosed roof above the west clock house. This part of the roof will not be accessible to employees but will be visible from the parking lot and up close on the second floor. The 2018 World Environment Day theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. There will be eight Chevy Volt battery box covers worked into the green roof design. The covers are made from a thermoset plastic which is difficult to recycle and for quality purposes, can’t be re-used. These covers have been turned into bat boxes and with some tweaks, boxes for wood ducks, owls, eastern bluebirds, and scaly-sided merganser. The cover can also be converted into a planter box. To date, thousands of these covers have been installed at GM’s wildlife habitat sites to benefit wildlife. Our efforts will contribute to reducing plastic waste pollution.
