Meet the Director The program is directed by Timothy B. Weston, an Associate Professor from the Department of History. Professor Weston is an active research scholar who publishes on modern Chinese history as well as contemporary China. He has previously lived in Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei. Professor Weston speaks Mandarin Chinese and has colleagues and friends (both Chinese and American) who live and work in Shanghai.

Academics Course: HIST 4688: Shanghai: Window on Modern China Credits: 3 upper-division credit hours The 3-week course will start in Boulder and end with two weeks in Shanghai. The Shanghai component will consist of two hours of class discussion and 1 to 2 field trips, including lectures, each day. In addition to our time in Shanghai, we will travel to nearby Shaoxing, another key city in modern Chinese history. You will gain a strong appreciation for both the content of modern Chinese history and for how that history is remembered and made use of in China today. You’’ learn the ways Shanghai, as a key site in modern China, has constantly re- invented itself in tandem with the dramatic transformation of the country as a whole over the course of modern history. Educational Excursion - Shaoxing • Shaoxing is a water town built on a network of canals • It is the birthplace of many influential figures, including the writer Lu Xun, whose residence you will visit. • You will also discover Anchang Ancient Town, Zhou Enlai's (the first Premier of the People's Republic of China) former residence, Bazi Bridge and more. While we have every intention of running summer programs at this time, your health and safety is our number one concern. We are in the process of making backup plans so that students can still complete the course if international travel is not possible next summer, or is restricted to some locations – stay tuned for more details!
2021 Global Seminar Costs Program fee includes: Education Abroad Budget • instructional costs Instructional Costs $3,377 • housing & breakfasts • field trips and museum admissions Health Insurance $65 • health insurance Housing & meals included in fee $1,115 • administrative fees to CU Boulder Education Abroad office Education Abroad Program Fee $4,557 Program fee does NOT include: Books & Supplies $50 • round-trip travel to China Additional Meal Costs $340 • lunches and some dinners Personal Expenses $385 • passport fees • books Airfare $1,300 • personal expenses Estimated Costs not included in $2,075 Program Fee For each participant, $5,000 of the program fee will be covered by a Center for Asian Total Estimated Budget (resident) $6,632 Studies (CAS) scholarship thanks to the Total Estimated Budget (non- $8,432 generosity of the Tang Foundation. resident)
Financial Aid & Scholarships • $5,000 of the program fee will be covered thanks to the generosity of the Tang Foundation. • Even though the scholarship may pay for the program fee and a portion of the estimated costs, you will need to pay the non-refundable CU deposit ($700) and purchase your airfare, before you receive the scholarship. • Residual aid from the academic year can apply to summer o Students taking at least 6 credits during the summer are eligible for a Summer Pell Grant and Gilman scholarship o Buffs Abroad Scholarship SHANGHAI by Hannah Farrar

Global Seminar Application Process We’ll open an application for you – stay tuned for an email with more info in the next few days! Log on to: http://abroad.colorado.edu using your CU Identity Key and password Speak with an education abroad after you receive e-mail notification that your advisor and/or with the program online application is open director at any point in the process! Work on your online application from home The application includes: complete Abroad 101 (if you have not done so yet), personal statement, online forms, application fee
When your application is complete Application Review & Interview Due within one week of acceptance: participant contract & non-refundable deposit March/April: post-acceptance paperwork, pre-departure meetings, readings & preparation GO!
