WELCOME TO THE ACADEMY 02 WHO WE ARE ? LOVED AND EXPERIENCED SINCE 1994 The Academy of Ophthalmic Education (AOE) was founded by the Khan Family in 1994 and has since been providing high calibre and officially approved continuing education seminars, on both land and sea, to all eye health professionals including Optometrists, Opticians and Optometric Assistants. We are extremely proud to be the only organization in Canada wherein all varied eye care professionals participate and min- gle under the same roof. WHAT WE DO FOR YOU When AOE hosted its very first Continuing Education Seminar back in 1994, admission was free to all partic- ipants. Since then, our registration numbers have been steadily growing. Although we can no longer offer free seminars, our aim throughout the years has been to provide the ophthalmic community the most competitive registration prices around without compromising the quality of lectures and speakers. We also continuously strive to offer special promotions, high-class venues and amazing food to provide our attend- ees with even more value. Another way of passing along the savings to our attendees is through the generous support of industry suppliers who participate in our Optifair Canada Trade Shows. The revenue generated through their spon- sorships and participation allows us to subsidize registration costs. Our trade shows also allow our attend- ees to mingle with industry suppliers and keep in touch with the latest in trends and technology. Our faculty includes a host of respected Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Opticians, many of who teach at the University of Toronto, Department of Ophthalmology and related Optometry schools throughout North America. AOE plays a major role in organized fundraising events for worthy organizations including ORBIS Canada and the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Our organization encourages and brings together all eye care pro- fessionals in hope of reaching the goal of eradicating blindness around the world. G LO BAL DRY EYE SU MMIT 202 1

FEATURED IN EYE DIGEST 21 SERVING THE PROFESSIONAL OF OPTOMETRY FOR 27 YEARS How A Canadian Company Forged The First Optometry TPA Course In Ontario In 1991, the Regulated Health Professions Act came into effect in Ontario. Twenty-two health professions were included, notably Optometry and Opticianry. Recognizing that the healthcare profession constantly evolves, from new treatments to the interplay between technology and pharmacology, mandatory continuing education became a cornerstone of the Act. Optometry and opticianry, not only had a health science component in their scope, but a common overlap in dispensing of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Enter the Khan Group. Knowing that success without charity is not 22 success, Mr. Ali Khan helped organize a major charity fundraiser called “The Eye Ball”. Nearly $100,000 was raised for ORBIS, the international organization which offers tertiary eye care all over the world through their flying eye hospital. The event drew more than 500 guests, formally dressed in ‘black tie’, to show solidarity as eye care professionals, dedicated to eradicating preventable blindness around the world. Special guests and speakers included Hon. Tony Clement, the National Minister of Health and Mrs Margaret Trudeau. The event caught the attention of the national media, including a special report by Hello Magazine. This was the beginning of a culture of ‘giving back’ where AOE would help form the Canadian Society of Eye Health Practitioners, or CSehp, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting eye care charities, educating the general public, sourcing insurance for ECPs, supporting students through free education and fundraising for students at risk. AOE was now quickly building bridges between ECPs, industry and lawmakers. However, the primary mission of AOE remained focussed on serving the profession of optometry by providing In 2008, the government of Ontario decided to high quality and fair priced CE. move forward for stakeholder input to revisit the issue of scope of practice in vision care. Trust was building and camaraderie was on the increase. AOE and its sister organization, CSehp, were invited to provide input as a recognized CE provider and stakeholder. AOE and CSehp’s recommendation in strong support of TPA became part of the final recommendation document of HPRAC. After the HPRAC recommendation, the Ministry of Health finally decided to grant optometrists the ability to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceutical agents to treat non surgical medical conditions such as common eye infections, including a very extensive scope in the entire country in regards to treatment of glaucoma. The College of Optometrists of Ontario issued a new directive for Optometrists to re-certify themselves by taking additional formally structured courses on TPAs: For Optometrists who graduated before Dr. Bouma Willem, MPP with Mr. Yavar Ali Khan, RO 1990, they required a 100 hundred hour TPA G LO BAL DRY EYE SU MMIT 202 1

For Optometrists who graduated after 1990, they required a 20 hour refresher course on pharmacology. At that time, the only formally structured course on TPAs was expensive and required a disruptive two-week trip to the school of Optometry in Oklahoma. With the approval of the College of Optometrists of Ontario, AOE rose to the occasion, developing and offering a structured TPA course in collaboration with NOVA South Eastern School of Optometry. The didactics course was presented over 3 weekends at Toronto Congress Center and the wet lab was conducted over one weekend in the state of the art ophthalmology clinic at the Bochner Eye Institute. This course, along with a formal 20 hour pharmaceutical update course for those who graduated after 1991, enabled several optometrists to acquire their certification for practicing TPA in compliance with the practice guidelines of the College of Optometrists of Ontario. AOE, in collaboration with NECO, offered another course to accommodate those left behind. This was the landmark effort by the Academy to serve the educational needs of the profession of Optometry. It is important to note that such an important course was not provided by any Canadian CE provider or school of optometry.
