Dear Members, Approximately one year and four months ago, our world changed. The Club and everything around us closed down. Slowly but surely, the Club figured out how to safely provide services to the members. We started with food deliveries, added golf and tennis when it was safe to do so, and eventually reopened pools and fitness, along with in-club dining in a new locale – al fresco at the pool! From the start, the Club’s management has been careful and thoughtful. Now that a large majority Deborah Benson of our members and staff are fully vaccinated, we are starting to get club president back to normal. We are enjoying guests again, card rooms are open, and it seems more like pre-COVID. We believe that some of the changes brought about by the pandemic will be permanent – i.e. food deliveries. Other changes we will be happy to see go away, for example, wearing masks. Gleneagles, we are in this together, and together we will see our way through the end of this pandemic. Renovations of the Veranda are underway. The new configuration of the Veranda will make it a more user-friendly venue. Parts of the Veranda will be air-conditioned and therefore useable in any weather conditions. Other parts will be outdoors and available for those who enjoy eating al fresco. The best of both worlds. Kraig Spina Our sales continue to be through the roof. It appears we will reach general record sales by the end of our 2021 fiscal year. Collection of New Member Capital Contribution fees help us fund our capital projects. manager Gleneagles continues to be in sound financial health. For those of you who are in residence, enjoy “summer camp.” The club has planned many exciting events over the summer. The annual Rounder’s Party, “White & Glow,” will take place in July and is always a big success. It is sure to be a good time. Be sure to check the calendar for all the other great summer opportunities – golf, tennis, social, fitness, spa, the list goes on and on. The club plans on hosting a number of round table meetings in the months of June and July. These meetings allow for communication between our leadership staff, board members and membership. Our goal in these meetings, first and foremost, is to provide transparent communication to our members. Additionally, we will update you on club happenings, including financial performance, capital improvements and general club activities for the remaining fiscal year. We always encourage questions from the membership. For those of you who are not in residence in Delray Beach, enjoy your summer wherever you are – we cannot wait until you return! Respectfully yours, Deborah Benson, Club President Kraig Spina, General Manager photo by MARTIN SCHAMUS cover photo by FRED SINGER 2 the Eagle JUNE/JULY 2021

COVER STORY We all know that the Florida winter is as good as it gets – mild temperatures, sunshine, activities galore, and best of all – no snow. However, the summer season in Florida has its own style of magic – and it certainly continues to attract new members to our club. At the club, our activities continue all summer long, and our year-round members enjoy a slightly more casual and less busy club experience. Yes, the weather is frequently very warm – but our location near the coast provides a great breeze on most days. Florida has seen significant population growth in recent years, and real estate inventory is currently in extremely high demand. The Florida lifestyle continues to attract newcomers from all over the country due to DEBORAH no state income taxes, resulting in a substantially lower cost of living. ON OUR GREENS JOE DeMINO, pga director of golf Hello Summer Hello to Summer! Yes, it is here – a little hot, but always enjoyable for summer golf. It feels like camp at Gleneagles – and golf is always one of the most popular summer camp activities! The golf department is finalizing the golf calendar for next season, and it will be here before we know it. This past season was a really special one. We all worked together to stay safe and enjoy the season. There were many new members and many friendships that were made. We hope you are all staying in touch through the summer and playing your season events together! Our summer leagues are being moved to next season, but we are trying to put some events together for the summer. It will be fun golf for all our golf members who are here through the summer. The golf course summer maintenance program began May 24 and will run into early November. Our Director of Golf Course Maintenance, Jason Bagwell, says this summer program is very important to be ready for next season. If you are away for the summer or here and need anything, please reach out to your golf department, we are always here for you. Have a great safe summer! 14 the Eagle JUNE/JULY 2021
GOLF EVENTS LUKE FRAZIER, pga head golf professional ANOTHER GREAT SEASON As we roll into the “new normal,” we ask that all members reflect on the season that tip-toed around a pandemic. To think, we began the season with nothing but a steering wheel in the carts, and now we have scoops, scorecards, pencils, etc. As the County restrictions continued to loosen, Gleneagles reinstated all member amenities on the course. League play was altered, single riders were accommodated, and the weather cooperated for the entire season giving us ideal conditions. Whether you are spending summer at camp Gleneagles with us, or spending it up north, we want to hear from you! Share your photos and experiences with us. Let us know what the clubs are doing up north to make you feel safe. Safe travels and we will see you in the fall! Tee Times: 561-637-1208 PRO TIP: Starter: 561-498-3933 HEAT = HYDRATE! Golf Pro Shop: 561-496-1333 As we move into the warm summer months, we Monday 7:00 am - 12:00 pm are always ensuring that everyone takes their Tues-Sun 7:00 am - 3:00 pm hydration seriously. It doesn’t take much to become dehydrated. Always have a drink with you, and even if you are not thirsty, take that sip! When you become thirsty, that is the start of becoming dehydrated. A wet towel in the cart is important to have and sneak in one of those cool towels as well. If you are hitting balls on the range during the summer heat, maybe hit a few less and work with a few clubs to make sure you can handle the intense heat. When we get tired and do not realize it, one of the first things we lose is a good arm swing, from Summer width to speed. The swing become all hands, which Maintenance doesn’t work that well! Remember your sunscreen, Victory Course closed: a big hat, and long protective sleeves. On some May 24 - July 4 really hot days, maybe just play 9, or come out a August 16 - September 26 little later in the day – we usually get a nice breeze. One obstacle to moving to the Kitchen line is a weak return of serve. If your return lands short and allows the serving team to move forward, you are vulnerable to a good drive from your opponents. Try to pin SCOTT the serving team behind the baseline with a deep return, then HARPER, uspta move forward to the kitchen line as quickly as possible before head tennis & your opponent hits their third shot.
